Gujeon Gukbap, a Gwangju gukbap restaurant serving pork soup and boiled pork
On days when I want a really filling meal, hot gukbap always comes to mind. This time I visited Gujeon Gukbap, a place where you can enjoy a generous meal centered on gukbap. It hasn't been open long, but word has already spread and lots of customers keep coming back — this was actually my second visit. That's how unforgettable this gukbap is.
It's affordable and the portions are generous, so you get a hearty meal, and being open 24 hours makes it easy to drop by anytime. I'm guaranteeing this is a genuinely good restaurant — I took my partner along and we tried mixed pork gukbap, sirak jangteo gukbap, and even boiled pork. Let's get into the delicious story.
Where Gujeon Gukbap is, where to park, and what the restaurant feels like
Gujeon Gukbap is near Jeoncheolwu intersection in Yongbong-dong, so it's not hard to find, and it's not far from Champions Field either, making it perfect for a hearty meal or a relaxed drink before or after a baseball game.

There's parking space in the alley behind the store, and roadside parking in front during meal times is also possible.

Since this is a place where you can try both Jeolla-style and Jeju-style gukbap, you can catch a hint of Jeju in the store's interior.

Walking in, I found the place buzzing with an early weekend lunch crowd already.

The dining hall had a variety of table setups, good for solo diners, family outings, or meals with friends.
Table setting, self-serve side dish bar and halmaep kimchi at Gujeon Gukbap

Each table comes with a basic set of seasonings, spices, and paper cups,

and the delicious side dishes served in cauldron-shaped bowls off to one side were self-serve.

At a gukbap restaurant, the side dishes and kimchi quietly matter a lot. Really appetizing side dishes make the main dish shine even more.

Besides the self-serve bar, they give you sticky rice and salted shrimp as standard, plus a whole jar of halmaep cabbage kimchi that's just as beloved as the gukbap itself.

The sticky rice, wrapped in savory seaweed, is so chewy and delicious.

You can't talk about Gujeon Gukbap, the Jeoncheolwu spot in Gwangju, without mentioning the halmaep kimchi that makes your mouth water just looking at it.

The halmaep cabbage kimchi and halmaep green onion kimchi have a truly, truly addictive spiciness — that flavor alone is enough to bring me back.
Gujeon Gukbap menu and prices: what we ordered

Besides the sticky rice and halmaep kimchi, tables with children can use a free baby table — a completely lucky service for parents visiting with young kids.

Gujeon Gukbap, the Jeoncheolwu spot in Gwangju where you can try both Jeolla-style and Jeju-style gukbap, has a menu lineup with sides and drinking snacks too, letting you enjoy a really generous spread.

- Mixed pork gukbap ₩10,000
- Sirak jangteo gukbap ₩10,000
- Head meat, one plate ₩15,000
My partner chose the mixed pork gukbap, I picked the sirak jangteo gukbap that I'd wanted to try for a while, and we also ordered a plate of head meat on the side.

Adding the boiled pork made the meal so much richer.

The tender boiled pork goes great dipped in vinegared chili sauce, wrapped in lettuce with garlic ssamjang, or eaten with kimchi.
Mixed pork gukbap: several cuts in one bowl
If you love pork gukbap, you probably prefer the mixed version where you can try several cuts at once. Scooping up the meat with the broth, you get a clean yet savory pork flavor unique to this dish.
The proper way to eat Jeolla-style gukbap! Add minced seasoning to the hot broth, mix in rice, and eat with kimchi.

In the end, I finished the whole bowl! There's plenty of meat, and mixed with rice it really fills you up — the kind of meal that has you patting your belly on the way out. It's a great choice when you want to properly satisfy your hunger with just one bowl of gukbap.
Sirak jangteo gukbap, the radish-greens bowl worth trying
The sirak jangteo gukbap, a dish I'd had my eye on since my last visit, offers a different feel from regular pork gukbap. It wasn't very spicy, so it was mild and easy to eat, and there was a lot of meat and other ingredients in it.
Why Gujeon Gukbap is worth a third visit

This time, we ordered and ate mixed pork gukbap, sirak jangteo gukbap, and boiled pork, and it was great to enjoy such a generous meal. The combination with the halmaep kimchi, which you can only get at Gujeon Gukbap, the Jeoncheolwu spot in Gwangju, was truly the best, and adding the boiled pork made the meal even richer.
Zucchini gukbap is famous in Gwangju, right? I got curious about how the zucchini gukbap at Gujeon Gukbap, the Jeoncheolwu spot in Gwangju, would taste. So I've already got that dish picked out for my next visit.
With a free baby table and a space and services that consider all kinds of guests, like a solo-dining zone, it seemed like everyone could visit comfortably. On a day when you're craving a hearty bowl of gukbap and looking for a good restaurant near Jeoncheolwu, be sure to visit Gujeon Gukbap.
