Jeonju beef and cheonggukjang bibimbap at Hoseongjeong

In short

Hoseongjeong is a butcher’s restaurant in Hoseong-dong, Jeonju, serving beef and hearty rice dishes. After a trip to Jeonju Zoo, we shared an assorted beef platter and two cheonggukjang bibimbaps, with plenty of high chairs and ₩2,000 soju and beer. Verdict: a great family meal for tender beef and filling sides.

Last weekend, our whole family took a little trip to Jeonju! We went to Jeonju Zoo, which is so great with kids, saw tigers and monkeys, and had been running around excitedly and sweating since morning 🌝

A family dining story after a trip to Jeonju Zoo

After making the full loop around the zoo, our energy was totally drained. Then our 41-month-old energizer Jiu suddenly said she was hungry and wanted meat that would just melt in her mouth, haha. Kids’ taste buds really are the most accurate—and the most intimidating! So I urgently searched like crazy for good restaurants near Jeonju Zoo and ended up at Hoseongjeong, a Jeonju meat restaurant that locals supposedly line up for!

A Hoseong-dong favorite, perfect after Jeonju Zoo

After all that fun at Jeonju Zoo, it was super close by car! It is apparently so famous as a Hoseong-dong favorite that when we arrived at mealtime, wow… it was absolutely packed. I wondered why there were so many people, but the second we walked in, I understood 😆

As a mom of two, the thing that impressed me most was the abundance of high chairs! At meat restaurants, high chairs are often scarce or not available at all, but this place had so many that 12-month-old Yeonwoo could sit safely and comfortably while we ate. Such a thoughtful touch that I really want to recommend to families looking for a good restaurant near Jeonju Station 👍✨

Jeonju assorted beef that melts in your mouth

Finally, the meat Jiu had been singing about appeared! We chose the assorted platter to taste the best of Jeonju Korean beef, and isn’t that color incredible? It was such high-quality Jeonju beef that looked fresh at a glance—my husband and I were completely impressed before we even started grilling 🌝

Tender beef enjoyed with a child

As it sizzled away on the grill, that savory smell hit my nose. When the redness had only just disappeared, I cut a small piece for Jiu and popped it into her mouth first. And before she could even chew, she said, “Mom, the meat is melting in my mouth!” and ate so, so well, haha. Jiu is such a little gourmet that she spits out tough meat like magic, but this meat was genuinely soft and tender—just perfect for a child. This is the level of a Jeonju meat restaurant!

The cheonggukjang bibimbap we loved even more than the beef

Actually, my husband is not a huge meat lover. So we ordered two cheonggukjang bibimbaps—rice mixed with fermented soybean stew—to share alongside it! But would you believe it? The cheonggukjang bibimbap hit his taste buds even more perfectly than the meat 😆

A filling cheonggukjang meal

The savory, rich smell of the cheonggukjang was already a pass for us, and then we piled rice and generous spoonfuls of cheonggukjang into a bowl full of namul (seasoned vegetables), mixed it all up, and wow—it was heavenly ㅠㅠ The moment my husband took a bite, his eyes lit up. He said it was the best bibimbap he had eaten recently and scraped the earthenware bowl completely clean. Delicious meat plus a filling meal dish—there is no way not to recognize this as a Hoseong-dong favorite.

Soju and beer for ₩2,000

And here is this restaurant’s biggest, most shocking twist! Moms and dads, seriously, do not be surprised. I looked at the menu and soju and beer were only ₩2,000!!! 🌝

Alcohol for ₩2,000 with prices like these these days—doesn’t that feel like a miracle? My husband and I actually doubted our eyes looking at the menu, haha. With delicious Jeonju Korean beef right in front of us, we could not skip a drink. A cold beer made all our tiredness melt away. I think the meat is part of why it is packed, but this crazy good value plays a big role too 👍✨

Our final thoughts on Hoseongjeong with kids

Just as Jiu wished, we filled up on high-quality Jeonju beef that melted in our mouths, then finished with the cheonggukjang bibimbap my husband raved about—a perfect meal! Above all, there are lots of high chairs, so it is wonderful for families, and the generous ₩2,000 drink price would make it a great spot for a work dinner too. If you are looking for a restaurant after Jeonju Zoo or a truly good restaurant near Jeonju Station, you absolutely have to visit Hoseongjeong 😆
