My fiancé and I were shopping at Lotte Department Store Gwangbok when we got hungry and headed up to the 10th floor dining area. I'd been craving sushi for days, so tonight's dinner was naturally Moshi Moshi Sushi.

What's on the menu and what the restaurant feels like

Before going in, we checked the menu. It ranges from sets for 2 or 3 people to affordable signature dishes. There's even a separate kids' menu, so it looked like a great spot for a family meal too.

The interior is clean and spacious. True to its name as a Japanese sushi restaurant in Lotte Department Store Gwangbok, it's decorated with a Japanese feel, but not overdone — it suited Moshi Moshi Sushi naturally. ✔ Baby chairs are also available.

Moshi Moshi Sushi opened at Lotte Department Store Gwangbok back in 2019. I feel like I've been seeing it for ages, but I hadn't realized it had been open that long. I figured staying in business that long must mean the food is good, so I was excited even before picking our order.

What comes in set 4 at 71,900 won?

We chose set 4: 18 pieces of sushi + shrimp tempura + 1 noodle dish, with sushi upgraded to 'better' grade and soba as the noodle dish, for ₩71,900. During the fun task of choosing, we debated between set 3 and set 4 — set 3 comes with salad, set 4 with shrimp tempura — and we went with the shrimp tempura.

The difference between 'good' and 'better' isn't the quantity of food, but the ingredients used on the sushi. Since we'd come to this Japanese sushi restaurant at Lotte Department Store Gwangbok to set the mood, we decided to go for the better one and treat ourselves today.

The vegetable salad and soft tofu salad served first

First up: the soft tofu salad

First came the vegetable salad, soft tofu salad, and pickled radish/ginger/danmuji (pickled radish). The vegetable salad was crunchy with a sweet-and-sour sauce that was great for whetting the appetite, and the soft tofu salad's sauce was seriously delicious. The softness of the tofu paired so well with the savory, salty sauce that I ended up eating the whole thing myself. I scraped up every last bit of the sauce, and my fiancé, watching me, asked if it was really that good, haha 😂

Shrimp tempura and cold soba

Next was the soba and shrimp tempura. Each of us got our own bowl of soba broth, and the shrimp tempura came out in a generous pile.

A generous serving of shrimp tempura and soba

I tried the shrimp tempura first — it had just come out of the fryer, still warm, with a crispy exterior. The batter wasn't too thick, and the shrimp inside was plump, so it had a nice bouncy texture with every bite. It was so good I ate a few pieces before even touching the sushi.

We mixed a bit of wasabi into the soba broth and dipped the soba noodles bit by bit. The broth was clean but full of umami, and with a touch of wasabi it got that sharp kick too — it suited my taste perfectly. The soba noodles were also springy, with a much better texture than soba I've had elsewhere. Choosing soba right before the weather turned cold was the best decision.

The 18 pieces of sushi: how were the abalone, eel and tuna belly?

The 18-piece sushi in set 4 came with a great variety: beef tartare, beef, eel, shrimp, abalone, salmon, tuna, and flounder. Every dish at Moshi Moshi Sushi, the Japanese sushi restaurant at Lotte Department Store Gwangbok, came out neat and beautifully plated, and we kept being amazed as each one arrived.

Close-up of tuna belly and shrimp sushi

The first piece we tried was the tuna belly sushi. The moment I took a bite, the tuna practically melted in my mouth. My fiancé and I each had one, and we both agreed it was the best sushi we'd ever had — the tuna's characteristic softness and rich, savory flavor were outstanding. Right after that I dove into the shrimp sushi, one of my favorites. The shrimp was plump on top, giving a bouncy texture with the first bite. Its naturally sweet, clean flavor paired well with the rice, and with the sauce on top, it was soft and easy to enjoy.

Abalone sushi and salmon sushi. That was the first time I'd seen such a large piece of abalone on sushi — and with a bigger piece, you really get that chewy bite, which made it even more delicious. The salmon sushi, with its rich flavor, crunchy onion, and sauce, was the second best after the tuna belly.

Flounder sushi and beef sushi. The flounder had a chewy texture and a clean, light flavor. The beef sushi was seasoned with bulgogi sauce, giving it a sweetness that would definitely appeal to kids.

My fiancé gave me his piece of salmon sushi since he knows I love it. The salmon sushi had a long tail, so it was satisfying just to look at. And the eel sushi was really delicious — the thick yet tender eel meat paired perfectly with the sweet eel sauce, and my fiancé said it was the best eel sushi he's ever had! Sharing a set meant for 2-3 people between the two of us meant we were both full and very satisfied 💛 With such a wide variety of sushi, alternating between the savory tuna, light flounder, and soft salmon meant we never got tired of it and kept being amazed with every bite.

Is set 4 at Moshi Moshi Sushi worth it?

With its clean interior and neatly plated food, Moshi Moshi Sushi Lotte Department Store Gwangbok seemed like a great place to visit when you want a bit of atmosphere. Everything we ate was delicious, and even though it's been a while since our visit, it's still stuck in my memory as a great experience.
