Weekend dinner with parents at a Yeongtong Korean BBQ: Sogogi Twist

Remember that go-to beef spot I always hit up in Ingye-dong whenever I'm craving beef? Just opened a new branch near Yeongtong District Office too. Whenever my coworkers and I want beef for a company dinner, we head to Sogogi Twist in Ingye-dong — the meat quality is always great and the price is nice, so it's one of my favorite beef places!

So when I heard there was a new branch near Yeongtong District Office, I was curious whether it would be as good as the Suwon City Hall branch, and headed over to check out Sogogi Twist Yeongtong District Office Branch!

Where Sogogi Twist Yeongtong District Office Branch is, and what the room feels like

Sogogi Twist Yeongtong District Office Branch sits right in the middle of the main commercial street in front of Yeongtong District Office. Maybe that's why, even at 6pm on a Saturday, the place was already packed with customers.

Same vibe as the Ingye-dong branch! Clean, comfortable interior

The atmosphere was similar to the existing Suwon City Hall Station branch, but the tables were rectangular instead of round, which made dining with my parents much easier. The area near Yeongtong District Office sees a lot of company dinners and gatherings, so this place would be perfect for family meals or group outings too.

Menu, basic side dishes and the self-serve bar

The menu at Sogogi Twist Yeongtong District Office Branch is identical to the Suwon City Hall Station branch! Whenever I come here, I always order the same thing — the 1kg mixed beef platter. They sell pork too, and I sometimes think about ordering samgyeopsal (pork belly), but since beef here is so reasonably priced, I always end up sticking with beef.

If you need more sides, you can grab extras from the self-serve bar. But note — there are onions but no sauce, so you'll need to ask staff for that.

Which cuts come in the 1kg mixed beef platter

Overwhelming visual! The 1kg mixed beef platter

Once we sat down, I ordered the 1kg mixed beef platter without a second thought, like always. Last time I tried the special platter it was way too greasy and I actually got tired of it partway through, haha.

Today's star arrived on a big plate laid over dry ice 🥩 At this Yeongtong District Office beef restaurant, ordering the mixed beef platter gets you three cuts: flower shrimp meat, sirloin cap, and outer skirt. I've been here enough times to know you can also order just two cuts instead of all three — flower shrimp + sirloin cap, or sirloin cap + outer skirt — which is really nice.

Personally I love sirloin cap, so I usually order sirloin cap + outer skirt, but since this was my parents' first visit to Sogogi Twist, we went with the full 1kg mixed platter.

How the flower shrimp meat and sirloin cap taste

No hesitation — straight onto the grill it went, sizzling away...! First up: the sirloin with flower shrimp meat attached, plus sirloin cap!

Flower shrimp meat is a rare cut — only a tiny amount comes from a single cow. Maybe that's why it usually isn't served on its own, but attached to the sirloin like this.

Of course, sometimes the shrimp meat comes served separately like this too.

Beef grilled with a nice crisp sear on the outside — absolutely glowing 🫠 A mouthwatering sight. The moment it hits your mouth, the juices burst and it just melts, so tender. The portion is a bit small, but the shrimp meat is great as a first bite.

And of course the sirloin cap with its beautiful marbling is amazing too...! I always eat it with wasabi or ssamjang (dipping sauce), and that combo is the best haha. Now that I think about it, this place doesn't have ssamnu (pickled radish)...? That was a bit of a letdown.

Eating beef alone can get a little greasy, so a cold beer is a must. I have a cold and was going to skip drinking, but I couldn't resist — cheers. A bite of fatty sirloin cap followed by a sip of beer is pure healing 🍻✨

Outer skirt: grill it only lightly

After the fattier cuts, we finished with outer skirt. This cut is lean and mostly meat, so it's on the lighter side, but you have to grill it only briefly — overcook it and it turns tough. But since we had to cook it well-done for my mom, it ended up pretty well cooked through...

Is the doenjang sulbap worth ordering?

That's when you need to order the cheat-code doenjang sulbap (soybean paste rice soup) to bring back your appetite for the meat.

Sogogi Twist's doenjang sulbap is genuinely spicy and savory, and it completely cuts through the greasy, heavy taste of the beef.

Served bubbling in a ramyeon bowl, doenjang sulbap is something I order every single time — the rice grains are deeply soaked in rich, thick broth, and one big spoonful completely resets your palate from all that beef fat. But this time it was noticeably spicier than usual.

It's also perfect for topping with grilled meat like this!! Especially after something fatty like sirloin cap — a bite of doenjang sulbap right after is essential. Honestly, before we ordered the doenjang sulbap, the three of us were struggling a bit with 1kg and kept pushing the last pieces toward each other... well, being polite. But once the doenjang sulbap arrived, the beef started disappearing fast.

And that's how we cleared 1kg of beef with beer and doenjang sulbap. For three people without huge appetites, it was a slightly heavy amount. Honestly I wanted to order jjagechi (spicy stew) too, but we were too full — so sad about that.

An Ingye-dong regular's verdict on the Yeongtong branch

Since I'm such a regular at the original location, my expectations were high — and while this visit to Sogogi Twist Yeongtong District Office Branch wasn't an exact match for the Suwon City Hall branch, the signature atmosphere of the place still came through clearly. If you're looking for a great-value beef restaurant near Yeongtong District Office, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.
