Hoega is a sashimi restaurant in Sokcho run by a couple with 30 years of experience, known for letting you take a mixed sashimi platter and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) to go in one order. Traveling with a baby, the writer called an hour ahead to reserve a small mixed platter and mulhoe, picked it up, and ate it at the hotel — thick slices with fins still on, plus white kimchi and washed, pre-portioned lettuce wraps, made for a full spread even without a kitchen. Recommended for anyone in Sokcho or Yangyang wondering where to get sashimi to go.

Samsami-ne Gyeongpodae Main Branch is a sashimi restaurant on the main strip of Gyeongpo Beach in Gangneung, Gangwon, that also does takeout. With a baby in tow, the writer skipped the dining hall and took out the budget assorted sashimi + mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) set for two at ₩70,000 to eat back at the hotel, and the thick-cut sashimi came with noodles, sushi rice, lettuce wraps and seasoned vegetables. Verdict: the price was budget, but the taste absolutely was not.

Baegya Coffee is a large bakery café taking up an entire building along the Gyeongpodae coastal road in Gangneung. On the terraced floor seating of the 2nd floor, facing the sea through floor-to-ceiling windows, corn ice cream, strawberry latte, and chocolat classique cake were on the table, and each floor has its own theme, which made exploring fun. The spacious layout and ample dedicated parking made it an easy place to relax without feeling cramped.

Sokcho Jungang Market squid sundae and tempura: Hwangbuja Twigim

Hwangbuja Twigim is a snack and fried-food stall in Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon, selling squid sundae (stuffed squid sausage) and a range of fried seafood to take away. The writer ordered squid sundae browned on the griddle, Abai sundae, and fried squid at Hwangbuja Twigim and shared them with family, and all three tasted good both hot and after cooling. Hwangbuja Twigim is a stop worth buying from again on the next trip to Sokcho.

Sokcho crab restaurant with tomalley fried rice: Palpal Hoesenta

Palpal Hoesenta Sokcho Daepo Port Market Branch is a snow crab and live fish sashimi restaurant in Section S of Daepo Port Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. Because red crab was in closed season, Set B arrived with two medium snow crabs instead of one red crab, along with a spread of side dishes, live fish sashimi, pre-shelled snow crab, and crab tomalley fried rice for 25,000 won. Palpal Hoesenta is a satisfying Sokcho meal if you want your crab cracked and cleaned for you.

Hupyeong-dong tuna restaurant with seaweed-kimchi wraps: Maguro Tuna

Maguro Tuna is a tuna restaurant on Boan-gil in Hupyeong-dong, Chuncheon, Gangwon. The writer ordered the Jin course in a private room, heard the chef explain each cut, wrapped tuna with seaweed and aged kimchi, and drank a tokkuri (small flask of sake) alongside it. Tuna refills meant nothing was left to wish for at Maguro Tuna, and the complimentary otoro (fatty tuna belly) sushi was the most memorable bite.

Dog-friendly dakgalbi restaurant in Sinbuk, Chuncheon: Hwagye

Hwagye Dakgalbi is a charcoal-grilled dakgalbi (spicy chicken) restaurant on Sinsaembat-ro in Sinbuk-eup, Chuncheon, split into a griddle zone and a charcoal zone, and dogs are welcome. In the charcoal zone we ordered the salt, soy, and gochujang dakgalbi with beer, and the thick cuts had no gamy smell and carried a clear charcoal aroma. With a wide free parking lot and indoor dog access as long as the carrier stays closed, Hwagye Dakgalbi is an easy Chuncheon dakgalbi stop if you bring a dog stroller.

Gangneung Korean BBQ near St. John's Hotel: pork galbi at Chodang Uga

Seated in the dog-friendly section with pet dog Ppupu, the writer ordered two servings of fruit-marinated pork galbi (grilled marinated pork ribs) plus a doenjang stew (soybean paste stew) with hanwoo brisket and steamed rice, and the sweet-savory Dodram pork ribs glazed with Imgye apple marinade paired especially well with the rich brisket stew. Chodang Uga is a solid pick for a pet-friendly meal or a family and group dinner while traveling in Gangneung.

Wild greens bibimbap and pollack soup at Daecheongmaru, Sokcho

Daecheongmaru is a chodang sundubu (soft tofu) and Korean restaurant on Gwangwang-ro in Sokcho, Gangwon. At around 11am, the table at Daecheongmaru held sanchae bibimbap (rice mixed with wild mountain greens) served with Yongdae-ri hwangtae haejangguk (dried pollack soup) plus chodang sundubu, alongside a generous banchan spread of soy-marinated shrimp, seasoned bujikkaengi greens and braised kodari (half-dried pollack). Of every restaurant tried on this Sokcho trip, Daecheongmaru was the most memorable.

Jumunjin Fish Market sashimi takeout with free sides: Ilchul Hoetjip

Ilchul Hoetjip is a takeout sashimi restaurant at the very back of the Jumunjin Fish Market alley in Gangneung, Gangwon. The Ilchul Special Assorted Sashimi came packed with free abalone, sea squirt, whelk and steamed shrimp, plus wrapping vegetables, ssamjang, chojang and soy sauce and even spicy fish stew ingredients, so there was no need to stop at a mart. Ilchul Hoetjip suits family travelers who want a quiet sashimi dinner back at their accommodation.
