I recently went on a trip to Gangneung and had such a satisfying meal at a spot locals actually recommend, so I wanted to share it with you.

We ordered the two-person set, which lets you enjoy a wide, generous spread of dishes! Eating it while looking out at the open ocean at Gangmun Beach... pure healing. The spicy sundubu (soft tofu) kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), with its rich, hot broth, was exactly what I needed to clear my head, and the perilla oil makguksu (buckwheat noodles), with its nutty aroma filling my whole mouth, was addictively good — I kept reaching for more.
Right in front of Gangmun Beach — how to get there
It's Gossi's Donghae Makguksu, located right in front of Gangmun Beach, so you can eat while looking out at the open sea.

It's a grand building you'll spot while walking along the Gangmun Beach path! The first floor has a variety of

local specialty products and things to browse, so it's really nice to walk around before or after your meal. The location right in front of Gangmun Beach also made it super simple and convenient to find.

Inside the restaurant and the ocean-view seats
Stepping inside, a clean, pleasant interior greeted us. There was a sign explaining that the noodles are house-made and cut fresh the moment you order, which made me trust the taste even more!

One of this restaurant's biggest strengths is definitely the sweeping ocean view through the windows! Seeing the sea right in front of you really makes you feel like you're on a trip, and it somehow made the food taste even better.
Ordering is easy through the kiosk placed at each table, and we ordered the two-person set and stuffed ourselves silly.

On one side, the self-service bar and utensils were kept hygienically tidy, and the side dishes were tasty too.

The basic side dishes were neat pickled radish, yeolmu kimchi (young radish greens kimchi), and kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi). Their tangy-sweet yet clean flavor paired really well with the main dishes.

So what's in the two-person set?
We ordered the two-person set so we could try several signature dishes at once. Seeing the neatly arranged food set against the wide-open sea made us gasp, haha.

Spicy sundubu kalguksu
The first thing we tried was the spicy sundubu kalguksu, and the fiery, hot broth was loaded with soft sundubu, savory ground meat, and a generous helping of gim (seaweed) flakes.

Made with 100% Gangneung tofu, the broth was genuinely rich and completely hit the spot — I immediately understood why this place is famous as a sundubu spot in Gangneung!!!

Kkamakjang suyuk and perilla oil makguksu
The tender kkamakjang suyuk (boiled pork with black bean sauce) included in the set was perfect when topped with the tangy, spicy sikhae (fermented fish salad) — the combination was flawless.
And then the perilla oil makguksu, which exceeded expectations! Made with organic perilla oil grown by a master producer in Yangyang, mixing it with gim flakes, sesame seeds, and sprouts released a nutty flavor that was so good.

Buckwheat keto gimbap
On top of all that, adding the buckwheat keto gimbap (seaweed rice roll), piled high with orange flying fish roe, made for a fun texture and a proper specialty dish?!

A browse through the first floor after the meal
It was a great time enjoying high-quality Gangwon-do local food with a gorgeous ocean view. After the meal, on the first floor,

there was a fun browsing experience too, so if you're looking for a can't-fail Gangneung restaurant recommendation, be sure to visit! True to being a Gangneung restaurant recommended by locals, it was a satisfying meal that lacked nothing — not the visuals, not the taste, and not the view.
