Gyeongju café walnut pastries warmed at home: Buja Hodu

Buja Hodu is a dessert café in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, selling rice-batter walnut pastries to take away. After an overnight trip with a close older friend, I warmed a 24-piece mix at home and loved its generous filling and restrained sweetness. A nice choice for a slightly different Gyeongju souvenir.

Gyeongju hot pot course with beef ribs at Hyoeunok

Hyoeunok Gyeongju Branch is a Korean restaurant in Bomun Tourist Complex, Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. I had its Gyeongju minari beef short-rib hot pot set for 65,900 won as my final meal of the trip, moving from mountain-high bones to shabu-shabu, kalguksu, and gondre juk. A memorable meal when you want more than an ordinary menu.

I tried a 24-piece mixed box with low-sugar red bean paste, pea cream cheese, and matcha flavors, all wrapped in color-coded packaging. Verdict: a great choice for a walnut pastry gift that is sweet without being overly sugary.

I packed six apple pies at 2 PM on a weekday without waiting, and they stayed crisp even after being carried around in rainy, humid weather. Verdict: an apple-pie stop I wanted to make again before leaving Gyeongju.

Gyeongsan Korean restaurant with individual brazier sets: Cafe Dongi

Cafe Dongi Yeungnam University Art Center Branch is a Korean restaurant on the second floor of Cheonma Art Center in Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk. I tried the charcoal-grilled spicy pork and bulgogi individual brazier sets, plus mini nuruk-aged tangsuyuk, with unlimited fried eggs, multigrain rice, snacks, and tea. Verdict: the smoky individual meals and generous self-service bar were especially satisfying.
