Jeju airport-area restaurant with spicy fish roe stew: Hwadeogeuro

Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Jeju Iho Tewoo Branch is a wood-fired grilled fish restaurant on the Iho Tewoo coastal road near Jeju Airport. On the last day of a Jeju trip, the writer ordered the mackerel set for two plus a fish roe stew (altang) side set made extra spicy, and ate it in front of the floor-to-ceiling ocean-view windows, with so much roe that more kept surfacing every time the stew was stirred. Because each fish is grilled to order, Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang is worth a phone order in advance if your flight time is tight.

Kid-friendly Jeju BBQ in Andeok: black pork grilled on elvan stone

Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon Shinhwa World Branch is a black pork geungogi (thick-cut pork) restaurant in Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo, Jeju, about 10 minutes by car from Jeju Shinhwa World. Visiting with a child, the writer ordered 600g of black pork geungogi for 66,000 won and ate pork neck, pork belly and pork skin using only chopsticks, because the staff grill every cut over briquettes first and finish it before setting it on a maekbanseok (elvan stone) plate, served with glass noodle and cucumber salad and doenjang stew with pork. For a family meal where nobody is stuck at the grill, Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon Shinhwa World Branch makes it easy.

Gluttony Coffee is a local café tucked into a Gudam-ro 2-gil alley in Ido 2-dong, Jeju City, with a public parking lot right in front. It is the café this family returned to most often on their Jeju trip, and this visit they ordered an Americano, a latte, fig cake, watermelon tangmomban (Korean-style watermelon punch) for their daughter, and the newly added levain cookie. For a relaxed, hip coffee break instead of a big oceanview café, Gluttony Coffee is the answer.
