Galbitang rib soup after work: Deundeun gukbap near Seonyudo Station

Deundeun Haejanggukbap Seonyudo Station Branch is a 24-hour gukbap (Korean soup with rice) restaurant at 105 Yangpyeong-ro, 1F, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul. Over an after-work dinner, the writer and her boyfriend each had a bowl — pork gukbap and gointol galbitang (rib soup) — and the clean, mild broth of the galbitang, ordered with no real expectations, was the most satisfying part. With free steamed pyeonbaek sundae (blood sausage) and a self-serve side dish bar, Deundeun is an easy stop whether you come alone or as a pair.

Yeouido pasta restaurant for gamtae seaweed cream pasta: MOI

MOI is a pasta and wine restaurant in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 2nd floor of Gongjak Sangga, a 3-minute walk from Yeouinaru Station Exit 1. On a weekday evening visit with a reservation, MOI's gamtae seaweed cream pasta (23,000 won) and chicken mushroom risotto (23,000 won) were shared, and thanks to the seaweed and pickled chili peppers, even two cream dishes never felt heavy by the end. Sitting between The Hyundai Seoul and Yeouido Hangang Park, MOI slots neatly into a shopping, dinner and river cruise date course.

Kid-friendly Sinchon Chinese restaurant lunch: Sammi Tantanmyeon

Sammi Tantanmyeon Sinchon is a Taiwanese-style Chinese restaurant on Myeongmul-gil in Seodaemun, Seoul, specializing in tantanmyeon (spicy sesame noodles) and lomian (braised-sauce noodles). On a weekend lunch with kids, the writer shared three dishes — honey sauce char siu lomian, char siu tantanmyeon, and a pork and garlic scape rice bowl — and found them clean-tasting despite looking fiery. For heat, char siu tantanmyeon is the pick at Sammi Tantanmyeon; with children, the honey sauce char siu lomian is the answer.

Ansan ox bone soup restaurant with spicy kimchi stew: Morakmorak

Morakmorak Seolleongtang Ansan Seongpo Main Branch is a seolleongtang (ox bone soup) and galbitang restaurant on basement level 1 of Star Plaza, near Ansan Jungang Station in Gyeonggi. Lunch here was one earthenware pot of seolleongtang, priced under 10,000 won, plus a spicy kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) that was ordered with no expectations and turned out to be the hidden menu pick, packed with meat. With a clear, deep broth, a self-serve side dish bar and 4 hours of free parking registration, Morakmorak is a filling lunch worth recommending.

Gankeun Galbi Seongseo Branch is an all-you-can-eat pork rib and Korean pork belly restaurant in Igok-dong, Dalseo, Daegu. Arriving at 8pm after a trip to Seongseo E-mart, the writer ordered the 21,900-won domestic pork belly and pork rib set and ate pork belly, pork ribs and pork skin plus self-bar tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), ramyeon and milk patbingsu (shaved ice with red beans). With the building's own parking lot and a kids' playroom with a trampoline, Gankeun Galbi Seongseo Branch suits family dinners with children especially well.

Cheonan jjamppong restaurant: level 2 cockle jjamppong rice, Bultina

Bultina Kkomak Jjamppong Sinbang Branch is a cockle jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) restaurant on Seobu-daero in Dongnam-gu, Cheonan. Ordered at spice level 2 out of 4, the cockle jjamppong rice came with scallops and pork in a rich, deep broth, and the fried dumplings were generous enough to take the leftovers home. Sindang izakaya outdoor tent seats and abalone cream pasta: Nuridam

Nuridam is an aged sashimi izakaya on Toegye-ro 81-gil near Sindang Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. On a Friday visit at 8:30pm, Nuridam served a beef tartare and salmon platter for 37,000 won, abalone innard cream pasta, soju and Kirin draft beer, and the outdoor tent seating had just opened for the season and was already full. The abalone cream pasta was worth scraping the sauce off the plate, and Nuridam suits both a date and a bigger group night out.

Euljiro3-ga gimbap restaurant for post-workout protein: 29 Tamago

29 Tamago Euljiro Branch is a keto and fusion gimbap (seaweed rice roll) and cold-pressed juice restaurant on the second floor near Euljiro3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. To refuel on protein after the gym, the writer keeps ordering the keto carrot rapé (9,000 won), keto vegetable gimbap (9,500 won) and whole sausage cheese gimbap (11,500 won), all filled with egg sheets and vegetables instead of rice, which sit light and stay filling for hours. 29 Tamago Euljiro Branch is an easy regular stop for anyone eating solo in Euljiro while sticking to a diet.

Sangam Thai restaurant couple's lunch: pad see ew at Drunken Thai

Drunken Thai Sangam Branch is a Thai restaurant in Mapo, Seoul, an 8-minute walk from DMC Station on the ground floor of Cheongun Shopping Center. A couple who eat Thai food often ordered pad see ew (14,500 won), pad kaprao moo sap (11,000 won) and green curry (16,000 won) and finished every plate, with the wide-noodle pad see ew beating pad thai as their favorite. Dujeong-dong massage shop in Cheonan: solo 90-minute aroma oil, Puan

Jeongja Station seafood bar, clam-packed steamer pot: Bacha Jeongja

Bacha Jeongja is a seafood steamer-pot bar on Jeongjail-ro near Jeongja Station in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. Three of us visited on a Saturday around 7pm and shared the signature bacha badajjim (steamed seafood pot, 37,000 won) with a kalguksu noodle add-on for 3,000 won, plus cheese-jamon melon and onion cheese nachos, and drank Saero soju highballs with tonic water. Every clam at Bacha Jeongja had opened, the broth tasted clean and refreshing, and the kitchen gave a generous extra helping of bean sprouts on request.
