Yeonnam-dong restaurant by Gyeongui Line Forest: guobaorou and beer

Ttasijia Yeonnam is a Singaporean shrimp noodle restaurant near Exit 3 of Hongik University Station, beside the Gyeongui Line Forest Park in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul. The order was a small guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) with beer, followed by shrimp broth fried noodles and shrimp noodles, and the flavor came strikingly close to the shrimp noodles eaten in Singapore. For anyone who loves shrimp, Ttasijia Yeonnam is worth booking for a Yeonnam-dong date dinner.

Dongtan kalguksu for three with a self-serve porridge finish

Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Gran Passage Branch is a shabu-kalguksu restaurant on the second floor of Gran Passage Green Zone, near Dongtan Lake Park in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. Visiting with the kids around 5pm, the writer ordered clear mushroom kalguksu for three plus one extra serving of beef for 40,000 won, then worked through the shabu-shabu, the noodles and a self-serve porridge at the end. The 7-year-old son asked for a second helping of porridge topped with kimchi, so Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu is an easy pick for eating out with children.

Muirang Mulhoerang Hyoseong Direct Branch is a mulhoe (cold raw fish and seafood soup) restaurant on Saebeol-ro in Gyeyang-gu, Incheon, a 5–10 minute walk from Jakjeon Station. The cold mulhoe and the hot, crisp pajeon worked well together, making Muirang Mulhoerang an easy return for mulhoe in Gyeyang.

Gijang outlet drive lunch: gnocchi and lasagna at Bueokgan restaurant

Bueokgan Restaurant, Shinsegae Simon Busan Premium Outlets is a Western-style family restaurant on the first floor of the outlet mall in Gijang, Busan. After a drive out and a long walk around the outlet, three dishes arrived at the table — napa cabbage Caesar salad, truffle mushroom cream gnocchi and lasagna — and the chewy gnocchi was the most memorable of the three. Pairing the thick gnocchi sauce with the cabbage salad keeps the meal light enough to finish every bite.

Dangjin local café with yogurt strawberry smoothie: MIMI Coffee Mill

MIMI Coffee Mill is a café that roasts its own beans in Sunseong-myeon, Dangjin, Chungnam. After a trip to the Ami Art Museum, the writer stopped in for the MIMI cream latte, yogurt strawberry smoothie, café vanilla bean latte, and sweet potato cake, and found the cream latte works best drunk straight from the cup with no straw, so the cream-to-coffee ratio stays intact. MIMI Coffee Mill is the kind of hideaway Dangjin locals keep to themselves, and it is worth the stop.

Bakery near Hongik Univ. Station, taste before you buy: Mandong Jegwa

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a garlic baguette bakery in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, a short walk from Hongik University Station. While you choose, the staff cut a slice from each kind of bread so you can taste first and buy only what you like — here that meant a garlic baguette, a pretzel-shaped cheese bread and a cream bun that looks like a dinosaur egg. Mandong Jegwa has no indoor tables and is mostly takeout, but you can eat your bread at the Ediya Yeonnam-dong branch if everyone orders a drink.

Euljiro 3-ga soju bar full makchang course: Baegyeom Makchang

Baegyeom Makchang Euljiro Main Branch is a Daegu-style makchang (grilled pork intestine) bar right outside Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul. A group of drinking friends worked through the full course — kkodeul-mokssal (chewy pork jowl), makchang sundae (blood sausage stuffed in intestine), Daegu-style makchang and jeotgal fried rice — and the house-ground soybean makchang sauce stood out, with no funky smell at all. For makchang sundae alongside soju, Baegyeom Makchang is the answer.

Lash lift that curls inner-corner lashes in Gongdeok, Seoul: Iyo Shop

Iyo Shop is a lash-only one-person salon on the 2nd floor of Park Palace 2, a short walk from Gongdeok Station in Mapo, Seoul. Sparse, pale, straight lashes got a moisture-nutrition lift plus black tinting in about 1 hour, and even the inner-corner lashes that an eyelash curler never held finally curled up. The eyes stung when opened mid-treatment and the eye area turned slightly red afterward, but the curl result at Iyo Shop was hugely satisfying.
