Myeongdong Italian restaurant for black sesame risotto: Mano di Chef

Mano di Chef Myeongdong Branch is an Italian restaurant on the 11th floor of the UNESCO Building in Myeongdong, Seoul, known locally for its bisque pasta. On this visit the Steak & Carrot Hummus Plate (₩29,900) tasted savory in the way yangnyeom galbi (marinated short ribs) does, while the Black Sesame & Cham-songi Mushroom Risotto (₩27,900) was packed with mushroom flavor. Between the old-world interior and the 11th-floor view, Mano di Chef works well for a meal after shopping in Myeongdong or for a wedding-invitation gathering.

Pyeongchon gukbap restaurant with seolleongtang for five: Hantiok

Hantiok Lotte Department Store Pyeongchon Branch is a third-generation Korean restaurant on the basement floor (B1) of Lotte Department Store Pyeongchon, directly connected to Beomgye Station in Anyang, Gyeonggi. A family of five, including a 23-month-old and fifth-grade twins, ordered the Andong guksi (noodle) set, the Andong gukbap (rice-and-soup) set and seolleongtang (ox bone soup) to share, and the table also filled up with bossam, king dumplings and jeyuk bokkeum. With baby chairs and wide gaps between tables, Hantiok makes eating out easy for families with several children.

Childish is a salted bread and salted taiyaki (fish-shaped bun) dessert café on Yeonmujang-gil near Seongsu Station in Seoul. On the spacious second floor of Childish, two people shared an egg mayo salted bread (₩5,500), a jambon-beurre salted bread (₩7,500) and the signature mammoth chewy salted taiyaki (₩7,000) with two Americanos. Everything is baked fresh in the shop, so even after three desserts the other taiyaki flavours were still tempting.

Gyeongju dessert shop packing six mochi as travel gifts: Tareudang

Tareudang is a premium dessert takeout shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju that makes and sells everything on the same day. A stop after lunch meant one yogurt mango rice cake, two yogurt peach rice cakes and three raw chocolate rice cakes packed to go — one raw chocolate each — and the yogurt mango and peach mochi were big enough to fill a palm. Tareudang is a good place to pick up both a Gyeongju travel gift and dessert to eat right away.

10 banchan and lotus leaf tea at a Gangneung restaurant: Yeonhwa Maeul

Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap is a cockle bibimbap and mulhoe restaurant in Pungho (Lotus) Village, Gangdong-myeon, Gangneung. On a weekday at 2:30pm the writer ordered the cockle bibimbap and mulhoe set for two (48,000 won), which arrived with 10 banchan, seaweed soup, gim and perilla leaves, somyeon noodles, and hot lotus leaf tea to finish. Ten minutes by car from Jeongdongjin with plenty of parking, Yeonhwa Maeul is a local favorite for an unhurried meal one step away from the tourist spots.

Haehwagaban Lotte Department Store Jungdong Branch is a Japanese rice bowl restaurant on basement level 1 of Lotte Department Store near Sinjungdong Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi. On a shopping trip with a child, the writer ordered the eel rice bowl ochazuke and lemon cold soba, and poured warm broth over the eel bowl halfway through for a lighter finish. The rich eel bowl and the tangy lemon soba balanced each other well, making them easy to eat in turns.

Seaweed-wrapped steamed skate lunch in Sokcho: Jungang Sanghoe

Sokcho Jungang Sanghoe is a steamed skate (gaori-jjim) restaurant on the 1st floor of the Centum Mark building in Sokcho's Jungang Market, Gangwon. At lunch the writer ordered the Pro Steamed Skate (Small) for 45,000 won on its own, which came with octopus bone-broth seaweed soup and side dishes, and followed the owner's tip of wrapping the skate in sheets of raw gim (dried seaweed). The spicy sauce was great over rice, but skate wrapped in gim with bracken fern and bean sprouts was the best bite of the meal.

Pohang Chinese food with a 4-year-old: Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan

Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan is a Chinese restaurant on Daei-ro 189beon-gil in Nam-gu, Pohang, serving both classic and fusion Chinese dishes. On a weekend lunch visit with a 4-year-old, the stone-plate seafood jjajang (noodles in black bean sauce) stayed hot to the last bite and the tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) arrived with the sauce on the side, so the child finished a full bowl of rice. High chairs and a parking lot right in front make Hwamok Restaurant Gaekjan an easy choice for a family meal.

Circus Rabbit is a custom lettering cake shop on the basement level of Jangmi Jonghap B Arcade in Jamsil, Songpa-gu, Seoul. The order was the Best Cake 6 diagonal eucalyptus design with a 'Marry me?' message in milk flavor, and on an actual proposal setup the cake sat beautifully among the flowers and candles while the cream stayed light and soft. Circus Rabbit takes orders through Naver Reservation and KakaoTalk and offers unmanned pickup, which made collecting the cake easy on a busy day.

Hanyang Dak Kalguksu Main Branch is a chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant in Garak-dong, Songpa, Seoul, a 2-3 minute walk from Exit 4 of Gyeongchal Hospital Station. Ordering hanyang dak kalguksu, mini suyuk (boiled pork slices) and king meat mandu alone after work, the self-bar spicy kimchi turned out to be buldak-level hot, and it worked well against the rich chicken broth made with perilla seeds. With solo tables, wifi and even a baby chair, Hanyang Dak Kalguksu suits a solo dinner or a family meal alike.

Jelly shop in Yeongjong, Incheon: 130g for 6,000 won at Rolly Polly

Rolly Polly Yeongjong Sky City is a pick-and-mix shop for imported jelly, candy and slime on Haneuldalbit-ro in Yeongjong, Incheon. On a walk with a 4-year-old, the visitor bagged about 130g of jelly for 6,000 won at 45 won per gram and added a 2,500 won lollipop. The bottle-shaped sour-and-sweet jelly was in a different league from convenience store jelly, so Rolly Polly Yeongjong Sky City is worth a return trip.

Kid-friendly burger spot near Hoegi Station: 1986 Shibuya Burger

1986 Shibuya Burger is a Japanese-style handmade burger restaurant near Hoegi Station and Kyung Hee University in Dongdaemun, Seoul. On a Sunday afternoon, the writer came with her husband and 4-year-old daughter, ordered the Shibuya Skillet Cheese Burger and the Shibuya Grilled Shrimp Burger, and helped herself at the self-serve bar to chips, truffle mayo, honey mayo, jalapeños and barley tea. Staff brought her daughter a Pororo drink and candy, making 1986 Shibuya Burger an easy choice for a family lunch.
