Jangwongap Kalguksu Yongin Giheung Branch is a Korean restaurant in Yongin, Gyeonggi, serving shabu kalguksu and house-made noodles. After shopping, my family shared three portions of shabu kalguksu and the limited Jochiwon peach bibim mandu. Verdict: a satisfying family meal with wonderfully chewy noodles and a bright seasonal dumpling dish.
Sushi Resto Sejong Sodam Main Branch is a Japanese restaurant near the arboretum in Sodam-dong, Sejong. The Couple Set included chef’s-choice sushi, futomaki, beef brisket udon, shrimp tempura, and two drinks. Sushi Resto is a good-value pick for a sushi date.
Jipbul Taebaek Dongtan Flagship Branch is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Yeongcheon-dong, Hwaseong. I tried its staff-grilled marinated beef ribs, mushroom pesto, and Taebaek kimchi fried rice. A good choice when you want beef ribs with lingering straw-fire aroma.
Menji Hanam Misa Branch is a Japanese ramen restaurant in Hanam, Gyeonggi. I had spicy toripaitan ramen and a mini yakitoridon on my own, and the rich chicken broth paired wonderfully with the smoky rice bowl. Verdict: Worth returning to when I’m craving Japanese ramen, despite the parking challenge.
Camel Orzo is an Italian restaurant in Seo-gu, Gwangju. I tried its red shrimp paella and pistachio burrata mortadella pizza, with rich seafood flavor alongside cheese and pistachio. A great pick when you want an unusual pizza and paella together!
Dwitdon Sanghoe, Jeonpo Branch is a pork BBQ restaurant in Busanjin, Busan, serving Korean pork back cuts and unusual specialty cuts. I shared the 1kg Dwitdon Whole Pig Set with friends, plus hangover ramen and pork skin. Verdict: Great thick-cut textures and charcoal pocha vibes.
Chulgeungil Saenggogi Daegu Jongno Branch is a raw-beef restaurant in Jongno, Jung-gu, Daegu. I tried its 59,000 won half-and-half platter of Gyeongsang-style mungtigi and brisket sashimi, plus generous banchan. The chewy mungtigi was the clear winner.
Gyuen-dang Avenue France Gwanggyo Branch is a Japanese restaurant in Gwanggyo, Suwon, where diners grill gyukatsu over a tabletop brazier. We shared tenderloin and sirloin gyukatsu with Ramune soda and loved the crisp coating and juicy meat. Verdict: a satisfying stop when you miss Japanese gyukatsu.
Gungmin Nakgopsae Gangseo Branch is a Korean restaurant near Balsan Station in Gangseo, Seoul, serving nakgopsae and hot pots. We cooked the medium beef tripe nakgopsae and finished with flying-fish-roe fried rice; the spicy broth and rich tripe were such a good match. Verdict: a generously portioned pick for a meal or drinks.
300°C Seafood Galbi Main Branch is a seafood restaurant on Masiran-ro in Yeongjong, Incheon. My friend and I had the ₩49,000 cuttlefish couple set, with smoky sauce, clam-filled kalguksu, and crisp half-and-half seafood pajeon. Verdict: a hugely satisfying stop for trying several dishes on a Yeongjong drive.
Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch is a seafood restaurant in Namdong, Incheon. I ordered raw shrimp sashimi and made the most of the prepared shrimp, self-service bar, DIY kimchi pancake, and affogato dessert. A great late-night spot for raw shrimp sashimi and a shot of soju.
Sonjeong Bossam Sindorim Branch is a bossam (boiled pork wraps) restaurant in the Sindorim food alley, a 5-minute walk from Sindorim Station exit 1 in Guro, Seoul. Two people ordering the gabrisal kimchi bossam set, small (₩42,000) get to pick seafood kalguksu or bibim makguksu to go with it, and out come gabrisal bossam boiled that day, kimchi made fresh daily, and seafood kalguksu timed with an hourglass. For a bossam place near Sindorim for lunch, dinner or a team dinner, Sonjeong Bossam Sindorim Branch is recommended.
