Steamed clam course for three in Geobukseom, Siheung: Bada Super

Bada Super Haemul Cheonha Jogaegui, Geobukseom Oido Branch is an ocean-view steamed and grilled clam restaurant on the 3rd floor at 116 Geobukseom-ro in Siheung, Gyeonggi. Visiting with a friend and his girlfriend, the writer ordered the 3-person steamed clams in broth and ate it as a course: tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) to start, then scallops, hard clams and mussels, beef shabu-shabu, and kalguksu (knife-cut noodles) at the end. The portions and course made Bada Super a solid pick for a double date or family gathering at Geobukseom.

First-night family black pork dinner in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju: Boncham

Jeju Boncham Sutbul Galbi (제주본참숯불갈비) is a black pork and charcoal galbi restaurant in Nohyeong-dong, near Jeju Airport, that locals go to. On a tiring first day after a delayed flight, the writer's family ordered raw galbi at 20,000 won and pork belly at 22,000 won, added naengmyeon (cold noodles) at 8,000 won, and the staff grilled the pork belly for them. The raw galbi at Jeju Boncham Sutbul Galbi was the most tender the writer has had, making it a solid first-day or last-day meal near the airport.

Wondang kalguksu restaurant with large suyuk: Bongpyeong Gohyang

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a buckwheat noodle restaurant on Hoguk-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi, an easy drive from the Wondang area. For a weekend lunch with parents, the table of three ordered perilla buckwheat kalguksu in a large portion for ₩12,000, bibim makguksu in a large portion for ₩12,000, and a large suyuk (boiled pork) platter for ₩23,000. Parking is roomy and the large noodle portion costs only ₩1,000 more, so Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is an easy family outing, though the large suyuk felt a little small for three.

Korean BBQ family lunch behind Jogyesa Temple, Seoul: Eom Yongbaek

Eom Yongbaek Pork Grill Gwanghwamun Branch is a charcoal bulgogi restaurant in a standalone building on a back alley behind Jogyesa Temple in Jongno, Seoul. Over a weekday lunch, a mother and her two daughters ordered three charcoal bulgogi lunch sets at 16,000 won each, which came with side dishes, siraegi (dried radish greens) doenjang soup, thick soybean paste and one pot of rice per two people, and the three finished every bite. With wide gaps between tables, Eom Yongbaek suits office dinners and group gatherings as much as a family meal.

Icheon Korean restaurant: 99,000-won octopus kodari braise, Seonghone

Seonghone Wang Kodari Dongtaetang, Icheon Seolseong Branch is a Korean restaurant in Seolseong-myeon, Icheon, Gyeonggi serving braised kodari (half-dried pollock) and dongtaetang (pollock soup). The small flower octopus kodari braise costs 99,000 won and, although it is sized for two, it arrived with a whole octopus on top and enough food for four, along with cod jiri soup and a volcano-eruption steamed egg. Between the spicy braised kodari, the chewy octopus and the clean cod broth, it made a generous family spread.

Group lunch for three at Todamok, a kalguksu restaurant in Ansan

Todamok is a kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) and bossam (boiled pork with wraps) restaurant with a hanok exterior behind Seonbu High School in Seonbu-dong, Ansan, Gyeonggi. Three of us, meeting for the first time in five years, shared the two-person kalguksu bossam set (roe-and-milt kalguksu, chicken kalguksu, half bossam) for 39,000 won, plus a potato pancake for 13,000 won and dumplings for 7,000 won, and the portions were generous enough to split three ways. With wide group tables and a large parking lot in front of the building, Todamok is an easy pick for a get-together lunch.

Omakase lunch in Yeongdeungpo with three sweet shrimp: Sushi Hibi

Sushi Hibi is a reservation-only omakase sushi restaurant on Dangsan-ro 32-gil near Yeongdeungpo-gu Office Station in Seoul, serving lunch and dinner. The lunch course comes in two seatings, at 12:00 and 1:20, and ran from starters through octopus and noodles, three pieces of sweet shrimp, uni, mackerel and conger eel, thin Goto-style udon, and strawberry sorbet. With a good balance of fish and rice and a course that flowed smoothly, Sushi Hibi made for a lunch that was well worth the price.

Casamil Sinsa Garosu-gil is an Italian restaurant on the 1st floor of La Casa Hotel, about 600m from Sinsa Station Exit 6 in Gangnam, Seoul. On a date visit, Casamil served whole squid ink risotto and rocket prosciutto wood-fired pizza at a full-height window seat surrounded by trees. With a 39,000 won weekday lunch course, a dog-friendly glass garden, a separate room for groups of 10 or more and free corkage, Casamil works for almost any occasion.

Seoul Korean BBQ in Seocho with steamed egg and stew: Gamdol Yeontan

Gamdol Yeontan Jip Yangjae Citizen's Forest Branch is a briquette-grilled pork restaurant on Gangnam-daero 6-gil in Seocho, Seoul. Two servings of pork belly and one of pork neck were grilled over the briquette fire, followed by steamed egg, doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), a draft beer and fried rice to finish. It is worth a visit near Yangjae Citizen's Forest Station on a day you want meat and a full spread of sides in one sitting.

Siheung shabu-shabu for two with kalguksu and porridge: Pyeonbaek

Pyeonbaek Hoegwan Siheung Janggok Branch is an all-you-can-eat cypress-steamed (pyeonbaek) and shabu-shabu restaurant on the 3rd floor of Janggok Edu Tower in Janggok-dong, Siheung, Gyeonggi. A couple visited after hearing the restaurant had been renovated and ordered the clear mushroom broth plus spicy broth set for two, worked through the self-serve bar and cypress steam refills, then finished with kalguksu noodles in the spicy broth and rice porridge in the mushroom broth. Even for someone who eats shabu-shabu at least once a month, Pyeonbaek Hoegwan made for a genuinely filling meal.

Kid-friendly clam hot pot restaurant in Namyangju: Wonhadeon Bada

Sujakgye Wonhadeon Bada Byeollnae Main Branch is a clam hot pot and grilled clam restaurant on the first floor of Star Plaza in Byeollnae, Namyangju, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the small clam hot pot with a young child and filled the griddle with short-neck clams, scallops, fan mussels, abalone, octopus and blue crab, then topped up the broth for a second round of dumplings and udon noodles. The broth at Sujakgye Wonhadeon Bada ran spicy enough that the child rinsed each piece in water, but with no grilling over an open flame the clam hot pot suited a family meal out well.

Corkage-free Saturday wine at a Sinnonhyeon Korean BBQ in Gangnam

Deo Bareun Jeongyuk Sikdang Gangnam Sinnonhyeon Station Main Branch is a Jeju black pork and hanwoo beef butcher restaurant a 3-minute walk from Exit 3 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Gangnam, Seoul, and it charges no corkage on Saturdays and public holidays, so guests can bring their own wine. Two friends ordered Jeju geun-gogi (thick-cut Jeju black pork, 600g) for 69,000 won plus water naengmyeon (cold noodles) for 6,000 won, spending 76,000 won in total, and the staff grilled all the pork belly and neck at the table. Picked for the Blue Ribbon list from 2023 to 2026, Deo Bareun Jeongyuk Sikdang serves pork belly with a texture good enough to come back for, red wine in hand.
