Cafe Cozy Bear, tucked between buildings

The first time I came across Cafe Cozy Bear Salt Bread Bakery Songdo Hagwonga Branch, it stood out all the more because it was nestled between buildings. The lettering on the sign and its comfortable-looking colors are not flashy, yet they naturally draw your eye.

The café also has seats on its outdoor terrace, which looked lovely for eating outside on a nice day. As a new Songdo café, it was running an opening event: buy three salt breads and get one free.

Isn't the bear illustration on the outside adorable? A bear that suits the name Cozy Bear perfectly 🐻

Cafe Cozy Bear bakes salt bread twice a day, at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. I arrived just after opening, and even a few steps before reaching the café, I could already catch that subtle, nutty butter aroma. How could you possibly just walk past after smelling that...?

A compact space in beige and wood tones

Inside, the café was decorated in a calm, comfortable palette of beige and wood tones. The cohesive interior and concept were impressive, and the Cafe Cozy Bear bear character dotted around the space was truly cute.

As a café specializing in freshly baked salt bread, it has made its bakery room visible like an open kitchen, so you can watch the bread being made. There are around four tables indoors, making it a compact space, but with weather as lovely as it has been lately, the outdoor terrace would also be a great place to sit and eat.

There was a phrase on one wall that conveyed Cafe Cozy Bear's vibe, so I took a photo. It really feels like a warm café made for an unhurried morning.

Cafe Cozy Bear's menu and salt-bread varieties

The drink menu was extensive, built around coffee with Cafe Cozy Bear signature drinks, non-coffee options, ades, and tea. You can switch the coffee beans to decaf, and latte drinks can be made with oat milk, so there are plenty of choices.

They say the café uses beans roasted by a national-team barista, so I think you should definitely give the coffee a try.

I visited a little after 9 a.m., but quite a few salt breads had already sold. There were six varieties in total.

  • Plain salt bread
  • Potato salt bread
  • Pollock roe salt bread
  • House-made red-bean butter salt bread
  • Garlic salt bread
  • Castella salt bread

The salt breads are baked crisp outside and soft inside with French cultured butter and Guérande sea salt! I was greeted by them while they were still freshly baked and warm. Up close, they were full of buttery aroma and flavor.

Cafe Cozy Bear is also running a Naver review event, so take part and receive an iced tea, too!

Trying a warm Cozy Latte and salt bread

Cozy Latte and salt-bread order

After some deliberation, I ordered a Cozy Latte, pollock roe salt bread, and house-made red-bean butter salt bread. True to a concept carried through to the end, the bread arrived on dishes whose colors seemed to continue the interior, alongside Cafe Cozy Bear's own custom mug.

Coffee, salt bread, and serving utensils

Along with the appetizing coffee and salt bread, they provided a fork, scissors, and tongs to make the bread easier to eat. I always find salt bread a little awkward to eat, so I loved that they thoughtfully noticed this and prepared all these utensils.

A chewy, comforting warm Cozy Latte

The mornings and evenings have become a little cooler lately, and that morning I found myself craving hot coffee. So I ordered the Cozy Latte warm. I asked what made it different from a regular café latte, and was told that it contains sweet milk with a pleasantly chewy texture.

Once I tasted it, I understood what they meant by chewy. It had a softer, deeper flavor than an ordinary latte, while the fluffy, fine foam on top stayed soft right to the end. It was a menu item especially suited to the cooling weather.

It was rich, dense, and almost chewy in texture, gently sweet, and a latte that wins through the ingredients' own flavor and quality rather than elaborate tricks. I could see why it was named after the café: a comforting, refined cup just like its name.

Pollock roe salt bread with a spicy kick

The pollock roe salt bread was a halved salt bread topped inside and out with a fairly spicy, creamy pollock roe mayo, then finished with mayonnaise and seaweed flakes. Its pleasantly crisp crust was not harsh on the roof of the mouth, while the inside remained soft.

The salty, spicy pollock roe mayo added savoriness, and as I chewed slowly, the subtle, nutty flavor of butter soaked into the bread emerged. It was spicier than expected, so if you are expecting a typical pollock roe bread with a strong mayo flavor, those sensitive to spice may be surprised. When it feels spicy, a sip of Cozy Latte makes it easier to enjoy with a gentler flavor.

House-made red-bean butter salt bread with whole beans

The house-made red-bean butter salt bread combines refreshing, nutty butter and mild whole red beans, selected and boiled in-house, between crisp yet soft bread.

I especially liked that the whole red beans were intact, bean by bean, and not sweet enough to overwhelm the butter. The more I chewed, the more harmoniously the butter's distinctive nuttiness and subtle saltiness came through. It felt more refined because each ingredient's individual flavor was allowed to shine.

Overall, I came away with the strong impression that this café does not push sweetness too hard, instead holding back the sugar and properly bringing out the flavors of its drinks and bread. If you love the natural tastes of ingredients—nuttiness, saltiness, and buttery flavor—you will really like it here. I thoroughly enjoyed everything from the coffee to the salt bread.

A leisurely salt-bread and coffee break in Songdo

Cafe Cozy Bear was a great place to enjoy salt bread and coffee together. I liked how it did not overemphasize sweetness and instead brought out the individual flavors of both the bread and drinks.

If you enjoy understated menu items where the ingredients' natural flavors come through, I think you will be satisfied! It is a place to visit when you want to relax over delicious salt bread and coffee in Songdo—nice as a Songdo date café and truly great for having coffee alone, too. Next time, I would like to return and try the other salt-bread varieties I missed 👍
