Sangsu ochazuke restaurant with no break time, open at 3pm: Ochaya

In short

Ochaya is an ochazuke (rice in hot broth) specialty restaurant on the second floor of a building a 5-minute walk from Sangsu Station Exit 1 in Mapo, Seoul. On a rainy Tuesday at 3pm, two of us ordered the butanogakuni (pork belly) and sakechazuke (salmon), and pouring the broth over the rice halfway through was the best part of the meal. Because Ochaya has no break time, it is an easy place for a proper meal at an awkward hour.

Where is Ochaya and what are its hours? 5 minutes from Sangsu Station Exit 1

I visited Ochaya, an ochazuke spot near Sangsu Station :) It's a 5-minute walk from Sangsu Station Exit 1. Not far from the station at all, so it was easy to walk there haha

No parking available at the restaurant, so I'd recommend using a nearby public parking lot or coming by public transit!

Take the outdoor stairs on the right and you're right there haha

Ochaya's seating and atmosphere — can you eat alone?

Ochaya has 4 solo bar seats and around 10 tables for 2-4 people. The day I visited it was a rainy weekday, so there weren't many people! I'd guess weekends get busier.

The place is pretty spacious and the vibe is quite nice. I visited around 3pm on a Tuesday, and having no break time was so great 😵‍💫 You order from a kiosk :)

Ochaya's menu: 6 kinds of ochazuke and tempura sides

Ochaya has 6 kinds of ochazuke on the menu.

  • Butanogakuni (pork belly)
  • Sakechazuke (salmon)
  • Unagichazuke (eel)
  • Kaisenchazuke (seafood)
  • Matoudaichazuke (John Dory fish)
  • Mentaiko ochazuke

6 kinds total 🎣🐟 They also sell Japanese peach juice 🍑 and Japanese beer 🍺🍻 haha

There are also 3 kinds of side tempura — shrimp tempura, shiitake tempura (seafood balls), and crab tempura :)

If you join the review event, they give you senbei matcha ice cream 🍵🍨!! I forgot to join, but I'd recommend everyone else joins and gets the ice cream haha

There were two of us, so we ordered butanogakuni (pork belly) and sakechazuke (salmon).

About 10 minutes after ordering, it came right out haha

How to eat ochazuke at Ochaya

Instructions for how to eat ochazuke
Instructions for pouring in broth after eating half the ochazuke

With ochazuke, you eat about half, then pour in the broth.

How the sakechazuke (salmon) and butanogakuni (pork belly) taste

A bowl of sakechazuke topped with salmon and flying fish roe
Sakechazuke with nutrient rice piled high with salmon, flying fish roe, and chives

Ochaya's sakechazuke has nutrient rice topped with a generous amount of salmon, flying fish roe, and chives 🐟🐟 Adding wasabi on top made it even more delicious.

Butanogakuni ochazuke topped with tender pork belly
Close-up of pork belly on nutrient rice in butanogakuni

The butanogakuni is the same — nutrient rice topped with reaaaally tender pork belly. The pork belly was so soft and savory, it was delicious even on its own!

A bowl of ochazuke with rice scooped into a side plate

I was eager to eat it as ochazuke, so I scooped some rice into a side plate and poured in the broth right away haha

A bowl of Ochaya's ochazuke with broth poured in
Finished ochazuke broth after being poured in

It was already delicious before pouring the broth, but honestly... eating it with the broth poured in was sooooo good ㅠㅠㅠㅠ It was my first time having nutrient rice with all sorts of grains mixed in, and it felt so healthy and nice haha

Personally, the rice on its own was already really tasty, but scooping some out and pouring the broth to eat it as ochazuke right away was even better! Adding more rice while eating the ochazuke made it 5000 times more delicious! So good haha

Is Ochaya worth it for ochazuke near Sangsu Station?

My stomach felt so light after eating at Ochaya, and the price was reasonable too, so I'd really recommend it to anyone looking for ochazuke near Sangsu Station.

This was my first time properly trying ochazuke, and it was so much more delicious than I expected, which was satisfying! Especially once the broth was poured in, the warm, clean flavor made it easy to eat without feeling heavy haha. The ingredients were piled on generously too, so one bowl left me surprisingly full!

It's not a common dish, so that made it more fun, and it seems like a great place to visit when you want something different to eat around Sangsu. Next time I want to try the other menu items I didn't get to today haha. With such a varied menu, it seems worth visiting multiple times, and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a different kind of restaurant near Sangsu Station :)
