Corner stone table full-eel set at Manmok, a Gangnam eel restaurant

In short

Manmok is an eel rice bowl restaurant on Seonneung-ro 82-gil near Seonleung Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Seated in a corner spot next to a piece of pottery, at a table with a genuine stone tabletop, two orders of the whole-eel set meal came with chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg), salad, and dessert ice cream. Thick, charcoal-grilled eel and a full dessert finish made it a meal good enough to treat someone to.

Today I'm bringing you a review of a place with an amazing atmosphere that I recently visited — an eel rice bowl restaurant called Manmok. I went looking for something delicious and clean, Japanese-style, partly to recharge, and I ended up having a meal that was more upscale and satisfying than I expected. I really want to introduce it to you all.

Manmok's atmosphere — much bigger inside than it looks from outside

The first thing I thought stepping through the entrance was: this place is way bigger than it looks. The interior is much more spacious than it appears from outside, and the overall design felt really upscale and sophisticated. The atmosphere is refined enough that it would be perfect for bringing your parents, a date, or any kind of formal meal.

A corner seat next to pottery

We sat in a corner of the restaurant. Right next to the table was a tastefully placed piece of pottery, giving the corner seat its own distinct mood and charm. It almost felt like eating beside a neat little garden — you could tell real thought had gone into it.

And here's one of the most surprising and charming points about this place — the stone tables! The tabletop is made of actual stone, and when I rested my hand on it, the cooling effect was no joke. I imagine visiting in summer would be incredibly refreshing and pleasant. It felt like the place had nailed both style and practicality at once.

Manmok's menu — half, whole, or one-and-a-half portions

Manmok's menu is neatly organized by the amount of eel: half, whole, or one-and-a-half portions. There was no need to think twice — we ordered two whole-portion sets to eat heartily.

The full eel rice bowl set spread

Soon the eel rice bowl set we ordered arrived, neatly arranged on a tray. The composition was really generous — along with the main eel rice bowl came pudding-soft Japanese steamed egg (chawanmushi), warm soup, wasabi, pickled radish, and a refreshing salad to whet the appetite, all served together as one clean set.

We started with the salad for a refreshing palate cleanser first. The crisp vegetables and dressing worked together to freshen up the mouth nicely.

Then finally, I lifted the lid off the eel rice bowl I'd been looking forward to, and the moment I saw it, I let out a genuine 'wow!' The glossy, shiny eel was piled thick over the rice, and just looking at it made my mouth water.

How does the eel taste? Charcoal aroma and crispy-outside, tender-inside texture

Excitedly, I scooped up a big bite of eel and rice together, and the charcoal aroma that filled my mouth, plus the crispy-outside, tender-inside texture of the eel, was insane. There was no fishy taste at all, and the sauce wasn't overly sweet or salty — it was savory yet clean, and it just kept going down easily. Adding a little wasabi brought a pleasant sharp kick that made it endlessly addictive.

When the set first arrived, I thought the rice portion looked a little small, but that turned out to be completely wrong. The eel itself was so thick and generously portioned that by the end of the meal I was pleasantly full. The quantity was more than enough, and the satisfaction was huge.

Steamed egg with shrimp inside

The steamed egg that came with the meal was another hidden gem. If you dig a little into the pudding-soft egg, there's a plump, springy shrimp hidden inside, adding both texture and double the savory flavor. You could tell they'd paid attention to even the smallest details.

Dessert ice cream — a choice of matcha or black tea

After finishing the meal, the staff thoughtfully brought out dessert. The dessert was ice cream, and you could choose between matcha flavor or black tea (milk tea) flavor.

Dessert ice cream served after the meal

This dessert was really the perfect finishing touch for Manmok! One sweet, richly flavored spoonful of ice cream cleaned up my palate after the eel rice bowl and wrapped up the meal so cleanly. It felt like I'd enjoyed a full-course meal at an upscale Japanese restaurant.

From the upscale atmosphere to the unique stone tables, the thick charcoal-grilled eel rice bowl, and the touching dessert ice cream — every element at Manmok was on point. If you want to try a proper eel rice bowl, or you're looking for somewhere to treat someone special, I highly recommend giving it a visit!
