In short
Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel is a sushi omakase restaurant on the first basement floor of Seoul Garden Hotel at 58 Mapo-daero in Mapo, Seoul. The dinner course ran through three appetizers, steamed abalone topped with snow crab innard sauce, five seasonal sashimi and ten pieces of sushi, grilled salmon and mushrooms, a sea bream rice bowl with cold bukkake udon, and grilled peach for dessert. A quiet sushi omakase in Mapo and Gongdeok: Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel
While looking for a proper meal in Mapo, I visited Danya, a sushi omakase restaurant inside Seoul Garden Hotel in Mapo. It's an easy spot to reach if you're near Mapo Station or Gongdeok Station and looking for good Mapo Japanese food or Gongdeok Japanese food.

Danya is located in the basement of Seoul Garden Hotel.
Seoul Garden Hotel is a storied, iconic hotel in Mapo, and its restaurant Danya matched that with a clean, upscale atmosphere. It wasn't overly formal, though — the chef and staff were friendly and attentive to the small details, so the meal started off on a great note.

Seating at Danya: 3 counter seats and 2 tables
Danya is a small space with about 3 counter seats and 2 tables. With so few seats, the surroundings were quiet, and it was really nice for chatting with my companion while eating.

There's fun in chatting with the chef about the food during omakase, but at Danya it was also just a great place to spend relaxed time with the person I came with.

The comfortable atmosphere and service made it feel like it would work well for a date or a special-occasion meal too.
What comes out, in order, on the Danya dinner course

Three appetizers: egg dish, plum and fig yogurt

Danya dinner / three appetizers The dinner course opened with three appetizers: an egg dish, plum, and fig yogurt. Each one had a different flavor and texture, so it was fun tasting little by little — the fig yogurt, with its subtle sweetness and freshness, stood out especially. These light appetizers naturally whetted my appetite and built anticipation for what was coming.
Steamed abalone with snow crab innard sauce

After the appetizers came the steamed abalone. Softly cooked abalone was topped with a snow crab innard sauce and fried scallions. The crab innard sauce had a rich, savory depth, and the fried scallions added crunch and aroma.

The chewy yet tender abalone paired beautifully with the rich innard sauce and fried scallions — a dish that left a strong impression early in the course.
Five kinds of seasonal sashimi
I got to taste several seasonal fish at once, including hairtail and striped mullet, comparing the different textures and flavors of each.

From light, clean fish to ones with a chewier texture, the differences were clear, and I ended up savoring each piece slowly.
Ten pieces of sushi made with seasonal fish
Ten pieces of Mapo sushi in total, made with seasonal fish, 5 kinds plus 5 more. After the sashimi came sushi made with flounder, sea bass, striped mullet, red sea bream, horse mackerel, hairtail, and tuna.

Eating from light white fish to richer, more flavorful fish in sequence, the characteristics of each ingredient came through naturally.
The tuna was served in sequence — akami then jutoro — and the texture and richness differed by cut, which made for a fun comparison.
Each piece was so well made that I'd confidently recommend Danya to anyone looking for the best Mapo sushi restaurant.

What impressed me most was how attentive the staff were, asking about my preferred rice amount and wasabi amount when ordering. Being asked so I could adjust to my own taste made me feel like they cared about even the smallest details.
If you care about the taste of the sushi itself, I think you'll be very satisfied here.

A sushi made with minced medium fatty tuna and scallion wrapped in gim (seaweed) also stuck with me. The tuna's soft, savory flavor combined with the sharp aroma of scallion, and as the tuna melted smoothly in my mouth the seaweed's aroma lingered — a distinctly different pleasure from regular tuna sushi. It was a refreshing change of pace mid-course, offering tuna in an unusual way, and the flavor combination was excellent.

The sea urchin sushi stood out for its soft, creamy texture. The portion wasn't large, but it was enough to add variety to the course — a dish that would have been missed if it weren't there.

This was the futomaki (thick rolled sushi) given as a final complimentary dish.
Cooked dishes, sea bream rice bowl, cold bukkake udon and dessert
Seoul Mapo Garden Hotel dinner course *Main dish *Meal *Dessert

I was already stuffed just from the sushi, but the dishes and meal that followed were so delicious I finished every last bite.

The grilled salmon and mushrooms with balsamic sauce were also really good.

For the final meal, sea bream rice bowl and bukkake cold udon arrived. I'd already told myself I was too full and would just taste a bit and leave the rest... but I ended up finishing the whole meal too.

The mild flavor cleansed my palate nicely, and the chewy texture of the cold udon stood out too. Having a dish like this at the end of the course made the whole meal feel even more complete.

Dessert was grilled peach with cream cheese to finish! Between work lately and family occasions, I've been to plenty of restaurants that are hard to book, plenty of famous places too... But the quality of the food, the atmosphere of the restaurant, and the attentiveness at Danya's dinner course were on another level — a memorable, genuinely happy meal. Highly recommend!!!!!!
Who is Danya at Seoul Garden Hotel best for?
Danya was satisfying not just for its food, but for its space and service too. Because it's a small restaurant, I could eat in a quiet atmosphere, and the staff engaged so naturally that it was easy to chat with my companion while slowly enjoying the course. The attentiveness of asking about rice and wasabi amounts beforehand stuck with me too.
Above all, the omakase course was well composed, but the sushi itself was especially delicious, so if you're looking for good Mapo Japanese food, Gongdeok Japanese food, or Mapo sushi, Danya is definitely worth considering. I'd recommend it to anyone who prefers a calm space over a flashy, lively one and wants to properly enjoy great sushi, or anyone looking for a high-quality Japanese restaurant near Mapo or Gongdeok Station. I'd love to come back for lunch too.
