Mackerel is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Jeju, so being able to enjoy it with plenty of ssam (wrapped greens) made for a really filling meal. If you're traveling around Jungmun and looking for a good Korean restaurant, I hope this review helps 😄

How were the parking and seating?

Most people get around Jeju by rental car, so having plenty of parking space meant I could visit without any stress before even sitting down to eat!

The place is spacious overall with generous spacing between tables, making it comfortable for families or larger groups to dine together 🤗

There were also cozier seats by the window, so even solo diners could enjoy their meal without feeling awkward. It looked like a nice spot to have a leisurely meal while taking in the view outside.

What's the self-serve bar like?

There's a separate self-serve bar where you can grab as many side dishes or ssam vegetables as you like, and there was quite a variety prepared 😃

Self-serve bar with side dishes and ssam vegetables

From kimchi to pickled vegetables to all sorts of banchan (side dishes), there was quite a range — plenty of sides that went well with the mackerel ssam-bap, so it was fun picking out what suited my taste!

Kimchi, pickles, and other banchan at the self-serve bar

With lettuce, perilla leaves, cabbage, and more, it was easy to wrap the mackerel however you liked.

What really surprised me was that the self-serve bar even had pork bulgogi and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry) — the spread was way more solid than I expected! I could have put together a whole feast from the sides alone while waiting for the main dish 👍🏻

I brought back some of my favorites, the pork bulgogi and japchae. They were great with the mackerel, and I bet they'd be just as good wrapped in ssam.

A wall full of celebrity autographs

The wall was covered in autographs from famous celebrities, which immediately gave off the vibe of a well-known Jeju restaurant that a lot of people have visited haha

It made me even more curious why so many people keep coming back to Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap! Seems like it's a well-known spot among celebrities too when it comes to must-visit places in Jeju!

Braised mackerel topped with well-fermented old kimchi

The main dish came topped with well-fermented old kimchi that looked like a total rice-thief just from appearance, and it was perfect wrapped with the mackerel in ssam vegetables!

A whole hefty piece of old kimchi on top

A whole hefty piece of old kimchi was placed on top, so it looked really generous from the start. The seasoning seemed to have soaked all the way through, and just looking at it made me want to eat rice with it 😋

The kimchi was so well-fermented it looked like it would tear apart softly — perfect to eat together with the mackerel!

Underneath the old kimchi, a hefty piece of mackerel was hiding. The flesh was thick and the seasoning had soaked in nicely and moistly, making a really great combination when eaten with the old kimchi 🐟

How does the abalone hot stone rice taste?

The abalone hot stone rice was piled high with ingredients too, so it looked delicious right away haha. With abalone, sweet pumpkin, and tot (seaweed fusiform) all mixed in, this bowl alone felt really filling!

A big spoonful of abalone hot stone rice

Taking a big spoonful, the abalone, sweet pumpkin, and tot were evenly mixed with the rice, giving it a great texture and nutty flavor! 👍🏻

A bite-sized piece of thick mackerel flesh

Breaking off a bite-sized piece of mackerel, the flesh was really thick and moist, and the seasoning wasn't just on the surface but had soaked in gently, so it was delicious even on its own haha

A piece of mackerel picked up together with old kimchi

Taking a bite of mackerel together with the well-fermented old kimchi was, as expected, a perfect combination! The nutty flavor of the mackerel paired with the deep savory taste of the old kimchi made me crave rice instantly 😋

Would I recommend it for a Jungmun trip?

The hot stone rice was also a treat wrapped in gim (dried seaweed) and dipped lightly in the seasoning sauce — the salty seaweed paired well with the nutty rice, making it a nice bite to have between the main dishes!
