Korean breakfast with a baby in Jungmun, Jeju: Godeungeo Ssam-bap
In short
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant in Jungmun, Seogwipo on Jeju that opens at 9:30am. The order was grilled mackerel with abalone hot-pot rice at 18,000 won, a homemade black pork cutlet at 15,000 won and citrus juice at 3,000 won, and the self-serve bar for wrap greens and side dishes was especially handy. An 11-month-old baby ate the grilled abalone best, so Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap works well for a proper morning meal in Seogwipo with a little one.

Where to get a proper breakfast in Jungmun, Jeju
When you're traveling around Jeju, you want black pork, you want seafood, but after a meal or two you somehow start craving an actual proper meal, haha.
This time we went to Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥) in Jungmun, Seogwipo. From the name I first thought it might just be a mackerel wrap place, but the menu turned out to be more varied than I expected — great. Perfect for a Jeju breakfast.
We had the grilled mackerel with abalone hot-pot rice, and the homemade black pork cutlet! First, the self-serve bar, haha.

We also ordered citrus juice on top of that :) The grilled mackerel with abalone hot-pot rice was 18,000 won and the homemade black pork cutlet was 15,000 won. Pretty solid spread for a meal on a Jeju trip.
Grilled mackerel with abalone hot-pot rice, 18,000 won
The grilled mackerel with abalone hot-pot rice at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is 18,000 won. The mackerel was plumper than I expected, which I liked right away.

Golden-brown on the outside, moist and not dry on the inside! Mackerel can have a fishy edge if it's not done well and I usually hesitate, but here, eaten with rice, it was mild and savory-salty — a real rice thief, haha.
And I personally liked that it wasn't just plain white rice but came as an abalone hot-pot rice. Lifting the lid off the hot stone pot and seeing the steam rise felt oddly satisfying, haha. You scoop out the rice first, and at the end pour water in and eat the crispy bottom layer like a scorched-rice soup — that's when it really feels like a full meal!
Piling a piece of mackerel on, wrapping it in the greens, and finishing with the scorched rice — I ended up way fuller than I expected.
The self-serve bar: wrap greens and side dishes
What I liked even more than expected at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was the self-serve bar!! It was really well set up.
You're not stuck with just the side dishes you're given — you can go grab more wrap greens or whatever side dish you're running low on, as much as you need, and that was surprisingly convenient. Especially with mackerel, you go through wrap greens fast, and being able to grab more without feeling awkward about it was really nice.
Other visitor reviews also mention being able to grab extra salad, wrap greens, and side dishes from the self-serve bar. Instead of feeling like a one-main-dish restaurant, it feels like a full, generous spread with lots of banchan (side dishes) — I think it'd work well for a Jeju trip with parents too.

Not a fish fan? Black pork cutlet, 15,000 won
When a menu is fish-only, it's tricky if someone in your group doesn't like fish. Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap also has a homemade black pork cutlet, so we ordered that too, and it was better than expected. The cutlet is 15,000 won and is described as made with Jeju black pork.

Crispy outside, tender meat inside — a totally different menu from the mackerel, but great for ordering both and sharing.

Our 11-month-old's top pick: grilled abalone
Definitely order the grilled abalone too. Our 11-month-old's number-one pick!!!!

A bite of mackerel, a bite of cutlet, haha — I was glad we ordered two dishes!
Jeju citrus juice, 3,000 won
And lastly, something that surprisingly stuck with me — the citrus juice, 3,000 won!

Figured since we're in Jeju, we had to get some citrus juice, and it was tasty. After eating fish, a sip of sweet, tangy citrus juice really cleared my palate! At 3,000 won it's not a big deal, so it's a nice thing to order alongside your meal.
How big is the restaurant, and is there parking?
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has a fairly large dining space and ample parking, which was pretty convenient for a Jeju trip where you're getting around by car. The Jeju Tourism Organization also lists the wide parking area and large restaurant space as features.

Is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap worth it with a baby?
Instead of always chasing something fancy and special in Jeju, sometimes you just want a warm hot-pot rice, golden-grilled mackerel, and a generous spread of side dishes and wrap greens. Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was a good stop for that!
The grilled mackerel was great, but what I liked most was being able to have the abalone hot-pot rice and use the self-serve bar together. Finished it all off with the citrus juice and left properly full, haha.

If you're looking for a good restaurant around Jungmun, Jeju, or want a proper meal of grilled fish and warm rice, it's worth a visit :)
