Jeju Korean restaurant with 16 side dishes: Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap
In short
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap is a Korean restaurant in Jungmun, Seogwipo, Jeju that serves aged-kimchi mackerel ssam-bap (grilled mackerel with wrap vegetables) and abalone stone pot rice from the morning. Ordering the two dishes together opened up a 16-dish self-serve side bar with wrap vegetables, Jeju black pork jeyuk (spicy stir-fried pork) and abalone porridge, and the stone pot rice ended with sungnyung (scorched rice tea). With roses blooming in the outdoor garden for photos after the meal, Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was a memorable stop on a Jeju trip.

When you're traveling around Jeju, it's even better if you can eat a hearty breakfast and check out somewhere pretty at the same time, right? On this Jeju trip I was looking for a breakfast spot in Seogwipo and ended up at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap! Turns out this isn't just a place you eat and leave. I had delicious mackerel ssam-bap and abalone hot pot rice, and after the meal I even got to look at flowers in a nicely decorated outdoor space — it's stuck in my memory as a real Jeju travel course :)
Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap: parking and first impressions

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap had fairly generous parking, so it was easy to visit with a rental car, and the atmosphere felt comfortable for a family meal too. What I liked most was that flowers and a garden are nicely arranged around the restaurant, so you can look around before or after eating. When I visited, roses were blooming beautifully, and honestly it put me in a good mood even before I sat down to eat haha.
Ordering aged-kimchi mackerel ssam-bap and abalone stone pot rice

We ordered the restaurant's signature old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap along with abalone hot pot rice. Since we were in Jeju, we had to try braised mackerel at least once haha.

The mackerel pieces were big and the old kimchi was braised until soft, so eating them together was seriously dangerous for your rice bowl haha! A bite of mackerel flesh with soft old kimchi on top of rice tasted just like home cooking, Jeju style!

Ssam vegetables came out too, so I tried wrapping the black pork jeyuk (stir-fried pork) in a leaf — that was tasty as well. Eating only braised dishes can get a bit heavy, but pairing them with ssam vegetables made everything taste cleaner.
Abalone stone pot rice cooked with the abalone innards

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap's abalone hot pot rice comes with both abalone and abalone innards on top of the stone pot rice, so it looked quite generous. The rice was infused with that distinctive nutty abalone flavor, so it tasted great even without the braised mackerel 😋 If you want a hearty Jeju breakfast, a hot pot rice dish like this is perfect.

And of course, the finale of stone pot rice is sungnyung (scorched rice tea) haha. After scooping out most of the rice, you pour hot water into the pot and let it sit, and at the end you get a nutty, warm sungnyung. After finishing off the braised mackerel and the banchan, wrapping up with warm sungnyung really felt like a proper meal to start the day.
What is on the 16-dish self-serve side bar?

Personally, what I liked most was the self-serve bar. There were as many as 16 banchan (side dishes) ready to go, and you could take as much of whatever you wanted — ssam vegetables of course, but also black pork jeyuk and abalone porridge, so there was fun in picking and choosing.

It felt especially convenient if you're traveling Jeju as a family, since everyone can pick their own favorite side dishes! Rather than just eating mackerel ssam-bap alone, being able to add a bunch of different banchan made for a hearty start to the day's travels.
A walk through the rose garden after the meal

And here's the part I liked best about Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap — the outdoor space around the restaurant. You can see flowers from the moment you walk in for your meal, and it's decorated more nicely than you'd expect, too pretty to just walk past.

So! After finishing the meal, we came out and slowly looked at the flowers and took some photos 📸 When I went, roses were in full bloom, but apparently depending on the season you can also see canola flowers or Jeju pink muhly and other flowers :)
Is Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap worth it for breakfast in Jeju?

It felt a bit different from a restaurant where you just eat mackerel ssam-bap and leave. You can eat heartily with old kimchi mackerel ssam-bap plus abalone hot pot rice, use the 16-dish self-serve banchan bar, and check out a pretty flower garden after the meal :)

If you're looking for somewhere to eat a hearty breakfast around Jungmun, this is worth considering as a Seogwipo breakfast spot! It'll suit you especially well if, like me, you want to enjoy good food and take photos in a pretty spot while traveling Jeju :)
