Gangnam chicken restaurant for stew and grilled chicken: Yanggyegok

In short

Yanggyegok is a chicken restaurant two minutes from Exit 4 of Yangjae Station in Gangnam, Seoul. Before a family drive to celebrate Mom’s new car, we ate the assorted grilled platter, cold chicken noodles, and dakdoritang, plus wasabi mayo and ramen noodles. Verdict: a wonderfully filling place for grilled chicken followed by chicken stew.

Thursday was the day Mom’s new car arrived!! We decided to take a family drive to celebrate the new car❣️ Before the drive, we went to pick up my sibling near their office to match their finish time, haha. And it happened to be dinner time too, right?? Then shouldn’t we eat dinner?? There was a chicken restaurant near Yangjae Station, so thoughtful me made a surprise reservation😆

Yanggyegok location guide

Yanggyegok, easy to find from Yangjae Station Exit 4

Yanggyegok (양계옥) was a two-minute walk from Yangjae Station Exit 4, right on the main road beside Olive Young, so it was very, very easy to find, haha.

The dining room and menu, already busy from 6 p.m.

Yanggyegok dining room

This is the dining room at Yanggyegok. We arrived around 6 p.m., and about half the restaurant was already full, you know?? Wow... by around 7 p.m., there was even a wait!!! A good restaurant really is a good restaurant👍

The menu at Yanggyegok, a popular restaurant in Dogok-dong. The meal menu had chicken kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), stir-fried pork, whole chicken, dakdoritang (spicy braised chicken), and add-on noodles. The grill menu included dakgalbi (grilled chicken) in salt, soy sauce, or gochujang, plus chicken cartilage, and there were lots of side dishes too!

First up was this piping-hot complimentary chicken gomtang (clear chicken soup)~~ It had chicken in the clear broth, with such a fragrant scallion aroma, haha.

And the basic sides came with four different sauces! As someone who enjoys lots of flavors, I really loved getting all four sauces per person, plus pickled radish wraps, something like pickled chili peppers lol, and perilla leaves and flying fish roe for making wraps!

All of these sides and sauces were neatly and cleanly prepared at the self-serve bar, so you can help yourself to as much as you need👏👏

An assorted platter with salt-grilled chicken and cartilage

Assorted platter of salt dakgalbi, chicken cartilage, and grilled deodeok

Assorted platter, ₩40,000. We ordered the platter with salt-grilled dakgalbi, chicken cartilage, and grilled deodeok (mountain ginseng root) all on one plate! The owner said they could recommend individual cuts if we weren’t good with cartilage, but we were curious about it, so we went for the assortment haha.

Salt dakgalbi cooking on the grill

The owner personally cut up and grilled the salt dakgalbi for us! It cooked faster than I expected, but it’s still best to make sure it’s nicely cooked, right?? While we waited~~

Cold chicken noodles (mulmakguksu)

Cold chicken noodles (mulmakguksu), ₩11,000. My sibling had wanted cold chicken noodles soooo badly, and wasn’t it just perfect that Yanggyegok, a popular Dogok-dong restaurant, had them?

There were big pieces of chicken too, with deliciously chilled broth and crisp radish. It would have been even better eaten with the grilled meat, haha.

Golden-brown salt dakgalbi

While we ate the cold noodles, the salt dakgalbi finished cooking to a beautiful golden brown!! This was my first meal of the day, haha. Alright~ let’s eat!!!!

Cooked dakgalbi in several cuts
Eating salt dakgalbi

Even though it was dakgalbi, it had a mix of different cuts, so it was fun that every cut had a different texture! It all tasted like chicken, but the varying textures somehow made the flavors feel different too??

Spicy seasoned grilled deodeok

This is the grilled deodeok that my dad especially loved, lol. He said it was even tastier because the spicy seasoning had soaked in so well, haha.

Out of the four sauces, I loved that pale green wasabi mayo the most most🌟 I’ve always loved wasabi, haha.

Dip it generously in wasabi mayo and you get that nose-tingling kick, the fragrant perilla leaf aroma~~ and the popping texture of flying fish roe. It simply has to be a great restaurant near Yangjae Station, haha.

And chicken cartilage has its own charm😆 I really found the crunchy, chewy cartilage bits appealing, so I recommend it to anyone who likes that sort of texture, haha.

Dakdoritang and ramen noodles after the grill

Small dakdoritang

Small dakdoritang for two, ₩31,000. Honestly, I was already full from the grill, lol, but we had planned to eat dakdoritang from the start. There was only one burner, so we decided to have it after the grilled chicken.

Dakdoritang loaded with chicken

Even though it was the small two-person size, it felt like there was a whole small chicken in there because there was so much chicken!! Were we extra full because we had the assorted grilled chicken before the stew? Haha. But really, there was so much. The magic of chicken that kept appearing no matter how much we ate✨️

Dakdoritang with white rice

Pour that dakdoritang broth over white rice, then gently top it with tender chicken thigh meat—everyone knows that flavor, so you know why it’s even more delicious, right?? Yanggyegok’s dakdoritang had a spicy, savory, addictive seasoning that made us go, ooh?!?! and keep eating, haha. Even when we were full, adding ramen noodles was essential👍

Congratulations again on Mom’s beautiful new car—and Yanggyegok, the chicken restaurant near Yangjae Station, made us eat until we burst🐔 It was the kind of deliciousness that made overeating unavoidable🌟
