A spacious Chinese restaurant that is easy to find from Yeoksam Station

Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch is on the second floor of Building B, 21 Teheran-ro 10-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. If you are taking public transit, it is an easy find after walking about 464 m from Exit 3 of Yeoksam Station on Subway Line 2.

Restaurants around Gangnam can often make parking or waiting a hassle, and their interiors can be cramped, but this place was impressively large and comfortable. Being able to eat at a relaxed pace was a huge plus.

There were plenty of both group tables and solo seats, so it looked ideal for office workers near Yeoksam Station grabbing lunch alone, or for group gatherings and work dinners after hours.

Why I ordered soft tofu jjamppong, jjajangmyeon, and cream shrimp

I sat down, looked over the menu, and happily agonized over the choices. At a Chinese restaurant, I always fiercely debate between jjajangmyeon and jjamppong, but today I decided to try both with no regrets. Rather than ordinary tangsuyuk (sweet-and-sour fried pork), I wanted a more special side dish to wake up my appetite, so I chose the cream shrimp.

My final order was the restaurant's signature and popular soft tofu jjamppong, jjajangmyeon—the foundation of Chinese-Korean food—and cream shrimp to put the finishing touch on the meal.

Soft tofu jjamppong with smoky wok flavor

At last, the dishes arrived and were neatly set on the table. The first thing to catch my eye was, without question, the red-hued soft tofu jjamppong. Its bright-red, rich broth was generously topped with soft, snowy-white tofu, and it had my mouth watering just looking at it. The moment I cautiously tasted a spoonful of broth, the full-bodied, savory depth of the stock spread through my mouth.

True to the restaurant's name, the smoky wok flavor was properly alive, making me feel instantly awake with one sip of broth. It was also packed with seafood such as squid and mideodeok (sea squirt), making every bite of the ingredients fun and satisfying in texture.

Most impressive of all was the generous soft tofu and the excellent role it played. There was quite a lot of tender, moist tofu, which made the bowl more filling, while its softness pleasantly mellowed jjamppong's characteristically intense, stimulating heat.

With the tofu alongside it, the overall spiciness definitely felt about one level lower. If you usually enjoy spicy food, I think you could order a level hotter than your usual preference and still enjoy it with plenty of fire. Even as time passed, the noodles stayed wonderfully chewy and springy rather than going soggy, with great texture to the last bite.

A spicy-sweet pairing eaten alternately with jjajangmyeon

Next, I tried jjajangmyeon, the eternal Chinese-Korean classic. Thinking the jjajangmyeon might be disappointing just because this is a jjamppong specialist was completely wrong.

The glossy, rich chunjang (black bean paste) sauce was sweet with deep umami, carrying an irresistible charm that kept my chopsticks moving. The thick sauce soaked perfectly into the chewy noodles, creating excellent balance. Alternating a bite of spicy, peppery soft tofu jjamppong broth with a bite of sweet-salty jjajangmyeon was the ultimate dream combination—nothing else in the world was needed.

Cream shrimp, perfect alongside spicy jjamppong

And then came the long-awaited cream shrimp. If you are looking for the perfect fried dish to have with spicy jjamppong, I would highly recommend this one. Plump whole shrimp are coated in a thin, crisp batter, freshly fried in clean oil, then generously tossed in a tangy, smooth house cream sauce.

One bite delivers the textbook contrast of crisp outside and juicy, bouncy shrimp within. The sweet, nutty cream sauce gently soothed my mouth after the spicy jjamppong broth, sending my overall satisfaction with the meal soaring well past 200%.

A clean self-service bar and a comfortable meal

Overall, Jjamppong Jijon Yeoksam Branch was very clean, and the food quality remained reliably consistent, so I felt well looked after throughout the meal.

The self-service bar had fresh, neatly arranged basics such as danmuji (pickled yellow radish) and onions, making it very convenient to refill anything needed during the meal.

If you are looking for a hearty, tidy meal near Gangnam Station or Yeoksam Station—or a spicy restaurant that will blow away everyday stress—I strongly recommend stopping by without hesitation.
