Every time I've gotten a perm it's ended in disaster, so it's been almost three years since my last one! I grew out my bangs for wedding photos, so I finally worked up the courage to try again.

As soon as you come out of Apgujeong Rodeo Station and turn into the first alley, the salon is right there.
I've only ever gone to neighborhood salons before, so heading to a Gangnam salon felt like a big deal.. is this finally the shadow perm success I've been waiting for?? I'd always envied my friends' successful perms and styling, so I was pretty excited this time.

On top of the five drinks, they brought out mini muffins and mini yakgwa (honey cookies). I hadn't eaten breakfast so I was starving, and it really hit the spot. There were even jelly snacks set out at every seat, so there was plenty to nibble on.
Designer Jisoo matches the shadow perm style to your hair length
The reason I wanted a shadow perm this time was that my bangs were heavy and fell in a totally straight line. Even adding volume with a round brush, it flattened out immediately and made my hair look stuffy.
I showed her the shadow perm photo I'd found online, and she pulled up her own reference photos to show me it wouldn't come out exactly like that with my hair length — but explained how it would actually turn out.
Before getting into the actual styling, they wash your hair, and I've never sat in such a comfortable chair. Between the hair wash and the chair, I nearly dozed off. Hahaha.
Men's shadow perm process: 15 min winding, 20 min heat, 7 min neutralizing
The shadow perm at Biorn Hair started with just a light trim before moving straight into applying the perm solution. It went roughly: 15 minutes of winding, 20 minutes under the heat processor, and about 7 minutes of neutralizing.
After a light trim, they started applying the solution right away. I run hot and sweat a lot, so my scalp is on the sensitive side, but the solution didn't sting or itch at all.
I've never had two people work on my hair at once before — must be an Apgujeong thing? I started getting genuinely excited about how it would turn out. But more importantly, isn't this mirror angle kind of hilarious? That's not my legs — I actually thought the mirror went all the way down to the floor.
After about 15 minutes of styling, it was 20 minutes under the heat processor and about 7 minutes of neutralizing.
After the heat, my hair felt so cool during the neutralizing step. That was kind of the highlight moment of pure bliss.
After neutralizing, they applied a shampoo — protein-based, I think, meant to soothe the scalp and replenish protein — followed by a scalp massage and even a light neck massage. It really did feel like Apgujeong-level service, and I loved it.
Shadow perm results and how to style the bangs with curl cream and a dryer
With a shadow perm, the curl changes depending on how much you dry it. When your hair is wet it's completely curly, and how much you blow-dry it determines how much the curl loosens up.
That day she showed me how to dry and care for it, drying it a bit less to keep the curl. My shadow perm attempt after three years was a total success. I'm not great with styling my own hair, so managing it afterward worried me the most, but she explained super clearly how to apply the curl cream and how to dry it.
My designer was Jisoo! If you're looking for a salon around Apgujeong Rodeo, I'd recommend giving Biorn Hair a try. I don't think my head shape usually suits perms, but it still came out exactly how I wanted. And now, about two days later, the perm has softened up naturally and settled into the style I was going for!
