A bowl of seafood mulhoe at Ppwang Mulhoe in Pohang

Today I'm introducing a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) spot in Pohang. There's a dish you absolutely have to try when you visit Pohang, right? That's Ppwang mulhoe, one of the foods Pohang is known for.

Ppwang mulhoe, a signature dish representing Pohang

If you search for mulhoe in Pohang, so many places come up. On this trip I wanted something cool and tangy, so I went to Ppwang Mulhoe. Eating there, I really felt the fresh texture of the seafood and the refreshing appeal of mulhoe. Let me share the taste, the atmosphere, and some tips!!

Where is Ppwang Mulhoe, and what are its hours?

Ppwang Mulhoe is on the 1st floor at 203-1 Haean-ro, Buk-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, near Yeongildae Beach. It's open daily from 10:30 to 23:00, with last order at 22:00.

Ppwang Mulhoe parking, and why navigation sends you to a blocked back gate

There's parking right in front of Ppwang Mulhoe, and you can also use the public parking lot at the beach in front of the restaurant.

When you search the address on T Map or Kakao Navi, it routes you through a back alley behind the restaurant — but that road is blocked. Make sure to come via the coastal road instead! 203-1 Haean-ro, Buk-gu, Pohang-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do — take the coastal road, definitely!

What Ppwang Mulhoe looks like inside, and how long is the wait?

Isn't mulhoe a must on a Pohang trip? Seeing the sea and eating good seafood is what really completes a trip to Pohang. Especially in summer or on hot days, cool mulhoe hits the spot more than a hot dish, so this meal was an easy decision.

While looking for good Pohang restaurants serving mulhoe, I ended up visiting Ppwang Mulhoe this time.

Waiting chairs outside Ppwang Mulhoe

Seeing the waiting chairs outside before I even went in, I could already tell this was a popular place with a queue — but luckily, on the day I visited, I got in right away with no wait! When looking for somewhere to eat on a Pohang trip, location and atmosphere matter a lot, don't they? The weather was nice, so eating with an ocean view seemed like it'd be great too.

Once inside, the atmosphere felt comfortable for a meal. It seemed like a good spot for a family meal or to drop by with friends on a Pohang trip.

If you're looking for a raw fish restaurant near Yeongildae, this might be worth keeping in mind.

I ordered via the tablet, and while getting ready to eat, I found a pink apron and put it on.

Ppwang Mulhoe's self bar: tteokbokki and fried snacks too

I was surprised to find a self bar — something you don't usually see at a Pohang mulhoe place — with so many side dishes! Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) and fried snacks too, suddenly it felt like a buffet. I came for mulhoe but ended up distracted by the tteokbokki haha. Why is the tteokbokki this good....haha

Two bowls at Ppwang Mulhoe: flounder mulhoe and the signature Ppwang mulhoe

Finally, the signature Ppwang mulhoe I ordered arrived. I got the champagajami mulhoe (flounder mulhoe), which is Ppwang Mulhoe's representative dish, along with the other signature — Ppwang mulhoe, with abalone, sea cucumber, squid, and sea squirt.

Then I mixed the broth and ingredients evenly. With mulhoe, you need to mix the ingredients and broth well like this before eating, so the overall flavor comes together. The tangy, cool feeling combined with the seafood's flavor really woke up my appetite.

At a glance, the seafood was so generous that I was excited even before eating. Mulhoe also looks pretty with its colors, so it's great for photos. Especially with fresh-looking seafood and vegetables mixed in, the whole visual was appetizing.

Unlimited thin noodles, then rice stirred into the mulhoe broth

Being able to eat unlimited thin noodles (somyeon) from the self bar was so appealing!! Besides the mulhoe, there were so many different side dishes at the self bar that I got to enjoy a variety of things! So I found myself wanting to recommend this place to anyone looking for a good mulhoe restaurant.

And since I'm someone who's learned the ways of mulhoe! I always mix rice into my mulhoe, you know? At first the rice tasted sweet and strange, but once you get used to it, it's a flavor you have to have, like fried rice!

Pairing Ppwang Mulhoe with a walk around Yeongildae

If you want mulhoe in Pohang, you'll end up searching for a good Pohang mulhoe restaurant, and personally I think it's worth adding Ppwang Mulhoe to your itinerary. Especially if you're exploring around Yeongildae, it's a good idea to pair sightseeing by the sea with a bowl of mulhoe.

For anyone looking for a must-do Pohang course, I'd recommend sightseeing at Yeongildae followed by a bowl of mulhoe at Ppwang Mulhoe :) I think I'll come back next time I'm in Pohang and craving something cool and refreshing.
