Soy sauce rib stew at 5pm with no wait in Gyeongju: Hwangnam Dukkebi

I went on a sudden day trip to Gyeongju with my kid. Finding a place to eat was the tricky part. On Hwangnidan-gil, which is full of snack places, where could we find a good, proper meal with a kid? I looked around and found this spot!

After walking around Hwangnidan-gil, going further to find a meal felt like climbing one mountain after another — this Gyeongju spot, Hwangnam Dukkebi, saved us!!! If you're looking for a place to eat on Gyeongju's Hwangnidan-gil, don't go far — I recommend Hwangnam Dukkebi :)

Booking 5pm right after break time: no wait at Hwangnam Dukkebi

I booked a reservation for 5pm, right when break time ends, and got in with no wait! Since I was in Gyeongju with my kid, I'd already decided I was getting the sweet-and-salty soy sauce rib stew without a second thought — but there were so many other mouth-watering menu items! Everything looked so good I wanted to try it all, but sadly, I couldn't.

What we ordered, plus the free buckwheat pancake

Here's the menu at this Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil restaurant. I wanted the Cheomseongdae set, but since I was with my kid, I went straight for the sweet-and-salty soy sauce rib stew :) They give a free buckwheat pancake, and since rice isn't included, we also ordered a hanwoo (Korean beef) soboru bibimbap for my kid and extra rice!!

We got the side dishes, dongchimi (watery radish kimchi), and buckwheat pancake first! My kid could eat the quail egg braise and dongchimi, and even though she said 'no thanks' to the buckwheat pancake since it was her first time trying it, she happily ate the braise and dongchimi haha.

Soy sauce rib stew for two: tender enough for a child

Here's the soy sauce rib stew (2 servings) and bulgogi bibimbap I ordered. (I was surprised at how generous it was..! We probably didn't even need the extra rice.. but I won't mention that my husband finished it all.)

I mixed a little of the sweet-and-salty rib stew broth into my kid's bibimbap, and for ours we added gochujang (red chili paste) sauce!

The soy sauce rib stew for two was bubbling away, packed neatly with glass noodle sarichi, rice cakes, mushrooms, scallions and more.

The ribs were sooo tender it was seriously delicious!! My kid, who spits out chewy meat right away, ate it really well. Haha (kids never lie).

I was full but it was so good my hand kept reaching back in. Maybe because it's slow-cooked in a cauldron — the ribs were tender and soft, loaded with hearty extras, not too salty, and seasoned just right haha. It was so delicious, and my kid ate so well that it was a really satisfying meal!
