When visiting Hwangnidan-gil during a Gyeongju trip, you want something delicious, but picking a menu with a kid in tow can be tricky. This time, while looking for a Korean menu that works well for eating with a kid in Hwangnidan-gil, we went to Hwangnam Dukkebi, which had been recommended as a Gyeongju must-eat on Threads.
The renovated hanok (traditional Korean house) exterior already gave off strong Gyeongju vibes, and stepping inside, the mother-of-pearl decorations made it feel like visiting Grandma's house — such a warm atmosphere. Best of all, the menu comes shaped like Cheomseongdae (Gyeongju's ancient star-observation tower), with dishes you can only find in Gyeongju, so this meal turned into a fun part of our trip.
Basic info on Hwangnam Dukkebi

A hanok-style restaurant discovered in Hwangnidan-gil

The reason we sought out Hwangnam Dukkebi was simple — we were looking for a Korean restaurant in Hwangnidan-gil we could eat at with our kid. In the process, we found it recommended as a Gyeongju must-eat on Threads.
When we arrived, the hanok-renovated exterior immediately caught our eye. Kind of a... old-meets-new feel haha.

Stepping inside, something even more striking than the exterior awaited — mother-of-pearl decorations everywhere.

Looking at the sparkling mother-of-pearl decor, it didn't feel like walking into a modern restaurant so much as visiting Grandma's house as a kid — such a nostalgic feeling.

The mother-of-pearl tables were fun too haha, and since the hanok frame was kept intact, it was neat seeing the exposed rafters. Thanks to that, there was fun in taking in the restaurant atmosphere as well as the food. ^^
What we ordered

That day we ordered two things: the Cheomseongdae 7-piece set and the cheese royal-tomb steamed egg. Since we were at Hwangnam Dukkebi, we wanted to try something with that Gyeongju feel, so we picked the 7-piece set. The moment the food arrived, the kid was already fascinated (●'◡'●).
The Cheomseongdae 7-piece set — extra special for its shape
The Cheomseongdae 7-piece set has Cheomseongdae-shaped crab fried rice in the center, surrounded by an assortment of other dishes arranged around it.

What caught our eye first were the Korean beef tartare, Beolgyo cockles, charcoal-grilled bulgogi, and charcoal chicken skewers, along with the flying fish roe perilla wraps and Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi. With so many dishes on one plate, the adults could pick and choose, and it was easy to set aside kid-friendly items separately. It seems like a solid menu setup for anyone looking for a Gyeongju restaurant to visit with kids haha.
The Beolgyo cockles I enjoyed most

Among the many dishes, what I liked especially was the Beolgyo cockles. The crab fried rice in the middle is seasoned, so eating it continuously can feel a bit heavy or rich, but pairing it with the cockles seemed to cut through that.

And wrapping other food with the flying fish roe and perilla leaf and eating it in one bite removed any heaviness, filling the mouth with a nutty perilla aroma that made it even more delicious. ^^
The kid's pick: Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi and cheese royal-tomb steamed egg

That day, the dishes our kid enjoyed most were the Cheomseongdae tteokgalbi and the cheese royal-tomb steamed egg. Fascinated by the Cheomseongdae-shaped rib patty as soon as it arrived, our usually picky kid ended up eating nearly the whole thing alone.

On top of that, the cheese royal-tomb steamed egg, puffed up like a little bomb, was soft and nutty, and our kid ate it right up. In the end, with the seaweed soup banchan, the tteokgalbi, and the steamed egg, it was one clean plate!
Days when a kid eats this well at a restaurant are the most rewarding, and this was a meal our kid was especially satisfied with among everything we ate in Gyeongju.
Hwangnam Dukkebi — extra special because it's only found in Gyeongju
What was nice about eating at Hwangnam Dukkebi was getting to taste dishes that carry the atmosphere of Gyeongju rather than ordinary Korean food. Expressing Gyeongju's iconic imagery — like the Cheomseongdae-shaped fried rice and tteokgalbi — through food fascinated our kid, and the meal itself became a fun part of the trip.
Since it's a special menu you can only find in Gyeongju, it felt worth trying at least once if you're in Hwangnidan-gil. If you want to eat Korean food with a kid in Hwangnidan-gil, or you're looking for something distinctly Gyeongju, I'd recommend Hwangnam Dukkebi. It's a place where you can enjoy a delicious meal along with dishes only available in Gyeongju, so it might be worth adding to your must-visit list in Hwangnidan-gil.
