Where is Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap, and what are its hours?

I was craving a hearty, healthy Korean spread today, so I headed to this Paju hotspot near Simhaksan — Deulkkot Ssambap!

Red-brick building of Deulkkot Ssambap

My family had been here without me before and said it was delicious. The exterior has that red-brick-house vibe ☆★ and there was plenty of parking out front!

Deuljeongsik or Kkotjeongsik: which set should you order?

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap has two set menus: deuljeongsik and kkotjeongsik. Both come with stir-fried pork + squid, doenjang stew (fermented soybean paste stew), gangdoenjang (thick soybean paste dip), and stone-pot rice — kkotjeongsik adds grilled Atka mackerel and mackerel on top.

We ordered the deuljeongsik set for 3! There's a kids menu too, and you can add fish if you want.

The place has a homey feel but the interior is clean and bigger than expected, with plenty of seating. There are baby chairs too, so it seems easy to visit with kids!

The 7 banchan, sweet pumpkin porridge and free refills

Order the deuljeongsik and within minutes the table fills up — salad, 7 kinds of banchan, gangdoenjang, doenjang stew, and even an appetizer of sweet pumpkin porridge. Nothing was over-seasoned, so my parents enjoyed everything too, and the kimchi stir-fry, eggplant namul, and zucchini namul were exactly my taste, so I refilled them a few times.

The banchan came out fast. Salad, 7 side dishes, gangdoenjang, doenjang stew, plus an appetizer of sweet pumpkin porridge — the table was already packed!!

Homestyle namul side dishes

Every single banchan felt like homemade cooking — you could've finished a whole bowl of rice on the side dishes alone. Not too salty, seasoned just right, so my parents loved it all! The kimchi stir-fry, eggplant, and zucchini namul were exactly my type, so I refilled those a few times.

Glossy rice scooped into a bowl

Then the freshly made, still-steaming stone-pot rice arrived! Scooping it into a bowl, it was glossy and chewy, and the rice smelled amazingly savory. The doenjang stew was packed with tofu and vegetables, spicy-savory and an absolute rice thief. And it was refillable! Amazing.

Self-serve wrap-vegetable bar at Deulkkot Ssambap

What is on the self-serve ssam vegetable bar?

And here's the best part of this Paju Simhaksan-area restaurant — there's a self-serve bar on one side where you can freely help yourself to wrap vegetables and banchan! Napa cabbage leaves, perilla leaves, kale, lettuce, green leaf lettuce, and even cucumber peppers — so many varieties, all fully stocked (*^3(*^o^*)

Hot-plate pork and squid, wrapped together in one leaf

The star of the deuljeongsik set is the sizzling hot-plate pork and squid stir-fry. Wrapping the squid and pork together in one wrap mixes the sauces for a special flavor, and the portion was bigger than expected, so I kept making wraps.

And finally, the main dish arrived. Sizzling hot on the plate — pork and squid stir-fry! The bright red sauce and the smoky aroma alone made my mouth water.

Plate of assorted wrap vegetables

We grabbed all kinds of wrap vegetables too, and every leaf was fresh and green, no wilting at all.

Wrap combining pork and squid stir-fry together

I tried the squid stir-fry first and immediately understood why people wait in line for this place. After a wrap of squid and a wrap of pork, mixing the two together in one wrap made it even better!! The blended sauces were a unique treat. The squid was tender and plump, and the pork was juicy with plenty of smoky flavor ( ´∀` )b The portion was bigger than expected too, so I kept making wraps.

Nurungji tea made by pouring water into the stone pot

Stone-pot nurungji and the ice cream dessert corner

Simhaksan Deulkkot Ssambap wraps up with nurungji (scorched-rice tea) made by pouring water into the stone pot, and the dessert corner has gangjeong (rice puff sweets), ice cream cones, and even a coffee vending machine. I scooped myself a chocolate ice cream cone and finished the meal perfectly, haha.

To close things out, the savory stone-pot sungnyung nurungji, made from the water poured in earlier, warmed and settled the stomach (o´・∀・)o A perfect ending to the course.
