Jumunjin Fish Market sashimi platter, 60,000 won: Haesong Hoetjip

In short

Haesong Hoetjip is a sashimi and seafood restaurant inside Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung, Gangwon, and it takes takeout orders by text message for pickup. Two of us ordered the medium plain sashimi platter at 60,000 won and added the limited special cuts for 8,000 won to eat at our accommodation, and the best touch was the plastic wrap labeled by hand with each fish and cut. For a relaxed sashimi spread back at your room, text Haesong Hoetjip in advance and pick it up.

Coming all the way to Gangneung without eating sashimi would be such a waste. This time, instead of eating at a restaurant, I wanted to eat comfortably back at my lodging, so I looked for places in Jumunjin that do sashimi takeout and found Haesong Hoetjip.

What we ordered was the medium plain sashimi platter for 60,000 won plus the special cuts add-on for 8,000 won! You get to try three types of freshly selected seasonal and popular fish that day, plus you can add the special cuts, so we booked right away — and eating it back at our lodging, I felt like we'd really picked the right Jumunjin sashimi restaurant.

Where is Haesong Hoetjip? Inside Jumunjin Fish Market, getting there from Gangneung Station

Haesong Hoetjip is located at 3 Sijang 2-gil, Jumunjin-eup, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, inside Jumunjin Fish Market. From Gangneung Station, take a bus and get off at the Jumunjin Port entrance, then walk about 5 minutes. Jumunjin Port and the Goblin (Dokkaebi) filming location are also nearby, so it's easy to work into a travel route.

A perfect spot to look around Jumunjin Fish Market and grab sashimi to go at the same time!

Parking at Jumunjin Fish Market: 1 hour free at the Coastal Parking Tower

If you're driving, just search for Jumunjin Coastal Parking Tower in your navigation. It's a large paid public lot right across from the restaurant, and you can get a 1-hour free parking ticket after dining or picking up takeout.

Whether parking is available matters a lot while traveling, so this was another convenient part of this Jumunjin sashimi takeout spot.

Haesong Hoetjip hours, how to order by text, and the wait

Haesong Hoetjip's hours are Mon–Thu 10:00–21:00 and Fri–Sun 10:00–22:00, closed every other Monday. It may close early if ingredients sell out.

Reservations aren't made by phone call but by text message. For takeout, just text the date, pickup time, and the menu you want. Apparently evenings between 5 and 8 pm can get so busy that same-day reservations are hard to get.

Like we did, if you book pickup in advance, you can also get shrimp and whelk (golbaengi) included, so pre-booking is recommended if possible! If you're planning Gangneung sashimi takeout, it's much less stressful to reserve ahead according to your travel schedule.

Haesong Hoetjip menu: plain sashimi platters, omakase, premium platter

Haesong Hoetjip's menu ranges from plain sashimi platters to omakase and premium platters. Since it was just the two of us, we chose the medium plain sashimi platter for 60,000 won, and added the limited-quantity special cuts for 8,000 won.

They said you can enjoy cuts that don't come in large amounts from a single fish, like flounder fin, rockfish belly, and ribbonfish belly — there was no way I was skipping that, haha. If you want to try a wider variety, it's also worth comparing the Jumunjin omakase menu.

Inside Haesong Hoetjip and picking up the takeout order

Inside, Haesong Hoetjip has tables set up so you can dine in the hall as well. We came for takeout, but there were plenty of customers eating in, and the tank was kept clean too, which made a good first impression.

Since this is a neighborhood people visit for all kinds of seafood, from sashimi to Jumunjin snow crab, it should also be a useful reference for anyone looking for a good Gangneung sashimi restaurant.

Haesong Hoetjip with a backlog of takeout orders waiting

When I went to pick up my order, there were already tons of takeout orders being prepared. It wasn't a grab-and-go kind of takeout at all — there was a steady stream of customers and orders waiting for pickup, which made me realize there's a reason this place is popular.

So for Jumunjin sashimi takeout, I'd recommend booking ahead and arriving at your scheduled time rather than ordering on the spot.

Completed takeout bag of sashimi from Haesong Hoetjip

We took our finished takeout order straight back to our lodging. After a full day of sightseeing, isn't it just better to shower, change into comfy clothes, and eat at your place instead of sitting down at a restaurant again? This Jumunjin sashimi takeout was even more satisfying because of that.

Live fish tank supplied with clean seawater piped in directly

Haesong Hoetjip reportedly supplies its tanks with clean seawater piped directly from the open sea off Jumunjin, rather than stagnant water, keeping it circulating for the live fish. They also say fish are prepared the moment they're ordered, using the shinkeijime method of neural stunning to keep the sashimi fresh and firm-textured for longer.

They say they personally inspect and select A-grade live fish every day, which explained why the sashimi was in such good condition. Because of this, it's a place I'd recommend to anyone looking for good food in Gangneung or a solid sashimi restaurant in Jumunjin.

Unwrapping the 60,000-won platter and special cuts at our Jumunjin accommodation

The best touch, once we got back to our lodging and opened up the 60,000-won medium plain sashimi platter and the 8,000-won special cuts, was this: they'd written the name of each fish and cut by hand in marker on the plastic wrap.

With a mixed sashimi platter, you often end up wondering, wait, what fish is this? Being able to check the name right away made eating it so much more fun.

It was made up of three types of freshly selected seasonal and popular fish that day, so there was enjoyment in switching between different kinds, and the sashimi itself was firm-textured, which made this Jumunjin sashimi takeout very satisfying.

Personally, I think adding the special cuts was such a good call. The texture and richer, fattier taste were noticeably different from the regular cuts, so it was fun comparing them one by one. For just 8,000 won extra, you get to try cuts that aren't easy to come by otherwise — recommended if you love sashimi!

Is Haesong Hoetjip worth it for sashimi takeout in Jumunjin?

For this Gangneung trip, I chose Jumunjin sashimi takeout so we could eat comfortably back at our lodging, and Haesong Hoetjip satisfied us from the quality of the sashimi to the way it was packaged.

I especially liked the thoughtful touch of labeling each fish and cut, being able to add special cuts, and the advance-reservation service. If you're looking for a place to get neatly packed sashimi takeout at Jumunjin Fish Market, or somewhere for Gangneung sashimi takeout in general, I'd recommend Haesong Hoetjip.

If, like me, you want to enjoy a relaxed sashimi spread at your lodging, text ahead to reserve and pick it up!
