Cheonan soy-marinated raw crab with crab soup for four: Huni Gejang

In short

Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch is a blue crab restaurant on Taejosan-gil in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, using crab from Yeonpyeong Island. A small authentic crab soup (70,000 won) plus one added ganjang gejang (soy-marinated raw crab) fed a family of four, with eight pieces of large halved crab in the pot and enough broth left to order an extra bowl of rice. Kids' rice for preschoolers costs 100 won, which makes Huni Gejang easy with children, and this family already plans to come back with their parents.

The weather has suddenly turned chilly in the mornings and evenings lately, and I started craving something hot and brothy. So over the weekend, I took the kids to try crab dishes at Huni Gejang, a well-known restaurant in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan.

To cut to the chase: the taste, portion size, service, and comfort of the place were all excellent, and I found myself saying throughout the meal, "We absolutely have to bring my parents here soon!" My husband said it was the best he's ever had, and even my crab-averse kid finished a whole bowl of rice — here's my honest review!

Parking and interior at Huni Gejang: a large private lot and high chairs

Huni Gejang Cheonan Main Branch has a large dedicated parking lot behind the building, so there's no need to worry about parking. Walking inside, the space felt huge and open, with tables and floors kept spotless — a great first impression.

What stood out most was how the owner and staff greeted us warmly right from the entrance, which put me in a great mood from the start!

The kitchen was open and clearly kept clean, and since the restaurant is so spacious, baby chairs were placed both in the inner seating area and near the entrance — great for dining with young kids.

Parking is one of the biggest headaches when eating out as a family, but Huni Gejang, this Cheonan favorite, has such a spacious lot that we could visit worry-free.

Huni Gejang menu and crab origin: 100% Yeonpyeong Island blue crab

The menu at Huni Gejang is a full set course letting you try stone-pot rice, seasoned crab marinade, and marinated shrimp all together, and takeout or delivery orders (in units of 2 or 5 crabs) are also available — great for gifts or eating at home.

Crab soup comes in small, medium, and large sizes, and the menu is only shown on the tablet at the table, so keep that in mind when ordering.

If the basic side dishes run low, you can conveniently request more through the tablet ordering device at each table. Being able to ask for extra side dishes without flagging down staff every time was really handy.

Origin labeling sign showing Yeonpyeong Island crab

There's also a large origin-labeling sign on one side of the restaurant, and seeing that the main ingredient — blue crab — is 100% domestic Yeonpyeong Island crab made me even more excited before ordering, since the yield and freshness are bound to be different.

Small authentic crab soup, 70,000 won: eight pieces of large crab

The authentic crab soup (₩70,000 for the small size) at Huni Gejang, this Yuryang-dong, Cheonan favorite, had presence from the moment it hit the burner! It came with a whopping 8 pieces of large crab, cut in half.

The pot itself was enormous — it filled the whole burner and stood tall — and seeing it packed with crab soup, I thought, wow, can we really finish all this?

As the origin sign confirmed, they use only 100% domestic Yeonpyeong Island crab, and inside were a whopping 8 pieces of large crab cut in half — each piece huge, with meat packed all the way to the shell!!!

There was so much crab meat that I picked out just the meat for my kid, and she seemed to fall for the sweet, springy taste, asking to try the claw legs herself. I cut up 8 leg pieces for her, and my eldest ate them all alone and asked for more, haha. She's really discovered the taste of Yeonpyeong crab now. I was a little worried the kids wouldn't eat crab soup, but they loved it, so now I feel like we can come back together without any worries!

The meat is seriously incredible, T_T. Piling that white meat onto rice soaked in the broth was pure bliss... look how packed with meat it is!! Impressive, right?

The broth got spicier, richer, and deeper with seafood umami the longer it boiled, and with plenty of radish along with the crab inside, both my husband and I were hooked, adding extra bowls of rice to the broth and finishing every last drop.

Adding one soy-marinated raw crab: sweet-salty balance, no fishy taste

It felt like a waste to only order the crab soup, so we also added one soy-marinated raw crab, which my husband loves. Honestly, I usually don't enjoy soy-marinated raw crab much — I'm not a fan of the distinctive fishy taste or the overly salty, sharp flavor it can have.

One additional order of soy-marinated raw crab

The soy-marinated raw crab at Huni Gejang, this Yuryang-dong favorite, completely broke my preconceptions, T_T. It wasn't fishy at all, and the saltiness wasn't overpowering — it showed a perfect sweet-and-salty balance!

My husband mixed rice into the crab shell and dug in, saying this was hands-down the best he'd ever had — seeing him enjoy it so much made me proud we'd found such a great restaurant.

Kids' rice for 100 won? Seaweed, seaweed soup and a bowl of rice

One of the things I loved about Huni Gejang was being able to order kids' rice for preschoolers for just ₩100. It came with seaweed, seaweed soup, and a bowl of rice, which took the worry out of feeding my child!

Honestly, crab soup and marinated crab are hard dishes for a young kid to eat, right? That made it feel tricky as a dining-out option, but this thoughtful detail made me feel like it's actually a great place to bring kids.

We also added a steamed egg dish on top, which was just perfect. The seaweed soup must have been so good that she mixed the whole bowl of rice into it and finished it completely, which honestly surprised me, haha.

Verdict on Huni Gejang: worth returning with the parents

Seeing such delicious food made me think of my parents, who especially love crab soup. The portions were generous, my husband raved about it, and watching the kids clean their bowls with seaweed soup and crab meat made me feel like this is a restaurant the whole family could be 100% satisfied with — my husband and I actually started discussing our next big occasion and decided to bring my parents along for our child's upcoming birthday :)

If you're looking for a spacious parking lot, a clean and comfortable large restaurant, friendly service, and fresh Yeonpyeong Island crab dishes, I highly recommend Huni Gejang, a favorite in Yuryang-dong, Cheonan!
