Kid-friendly Chinese restaurant in Yangyang: mini jajangmyeon lunch

In short

Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong is a chicken jjamppong (spicy noodle soup) restaurant on Nammun 6-gil in Yangyang-eup, Yangyang, Gangwon. On a Yangyang trip, the two adults ordered chicken jjamppong (11,000 won) and chicken jjamppong rice (11,000 won) while the 6-year-old had a mini jajangmyeon (black bean noodles, 6,000 won), and the bean sprout broth tasted clean but ran a little spicier than Shin Ramyun. With baby chairs and free parking out front, Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong works well as a one-meal lunch stop for travelers with young children.

While traveling around Yangyang, Gangwon, I was trying to decide on lunch and got a craving for something spicy, so I headed to Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong, a jjamppong spot in Yangyang. Traveling with a kid, it matters a lot whether there's something on the menu she can eat too — so the adults ordered jjamppong and my daughter ordered jajangmyeon, and all three of us ended up happy. Here's the review ✍️

Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong parking and opening hours

Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong is located at 4-9 Nammun 6-gil, Yangyang-eup, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do, and there's free parking right in front of the restaurant.

The area getting there was pretty congested, but the parking lot itself was fairly large. It fit 5–6 cars, and even visiting on a Friday lunch hour, parking was easy. For a beginner driver, I'd call the parking difficulty low.

Mon, Wed–Sun 10:30–13:50 * Closed every Thursday The hours are pretty short, so definitely check before you go.

There's a little garden plot next to the restaurant growing various vegetables. A squash happened to be growing right there, so my 6-year-old and I had a fun time checking it out.

I really liked that they have a mini jajangmyeon on the menu. It's great for feeding a kid when you're visiting with one, and it's also perfect as a side if an adult wants a little something extra alongside their jjamppong.

Inside Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong: is it kid-friendly?

Inside, there are tables for 4 and for 6, and the vibe felt warm and homey. There's also a baby chair available, so it looked like a good spot for families with young kids.

It was fully packed when we arrived on a Friday for lunch, so these overall shots of the dining room were taken later once it emptied out a bit.

What we ordered: chicken jjamppong, chicken jjamppong with rice and mini jajangmyeon

My husband and I wanted a spicy broth, so we went with the chicken jjamppong, while our 6-year-old ordered the mini-size jajangmyeon.

Here's everything laid out. These one-bowl dishes look like the perfect lunch during a trip. Side dishes were pickled radish, onion, kimchi, and fish cake, and they're refillable too.

I like rice more than noodles, so I ordered the chicken jjamppong rice. Visually, it looks a lot like yukgaejang (spicy beef soup).

Most jjamppong is the seafood kind, so chicken jjamppong was new to me and I was really curious how it would taste! Unlike a typical seafood jjamppong broth, the bean sprouts gave it a cleaner, lighter flavor. The bowl includes chicken, bean sprouts, chives, and kimchi.

How spicy is the chicken jjamppong at Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong?

This is my husband's chicken jjamppong. The broth flavor and ingredients are the same as the rice version, just served with noodles instead of rice.

As for spice level — keeping in mind I'm pretty weak with spicy food — it was a bit spicier than Shin Ramyun. That said, it wasn't so spicy I couldn't handle it; it hit a nicely spicy sweet spot.

Mini jajangmyeon: portion size and taste for a 6-year-old

This is the mini size we ordered for our daughter. Even though it's called "mini," the portion really wasn't small at all.

The mini jajangmyeon, which wasn't actually a small portion

It was too much for a 6-year-old to finish, so my husband and I ended up sharing bites of it too.

The jajangmyeon sauce wasn't greasy or overly bold — it had a mild, gentle flavor that's easy for kids to eat.

Our daughter happily worked through her jajangmyeon and also ate the side rice and fish cake we ordered, so we all had a hearty lunch.
