Hangover meal of chicken jjamppong in Yangyang
Visiting Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong

I went to Yangyang to run the Yangyang Marathon, and after the race I hit the bars hard. The next morning I really needed a hangover cure, so I did some frantic searching and found a jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) place.

Ordering chicken jjamppong and a side of jajangmyeon

They only sell two signature dishes: chicken jjamppong and jajangmyeon (black bean noodles). You know a place with just one or two menu items is usually a real hidden gem, right?? They also serve alcohol, so daytime drinking is an option. When we visited there were plenty of customers, and clearly a lot of delivery orders coming in too.

  • Side jajangmyeon, 2 bowls ₩12,000
  • Rice ₩1,000

We decided to each get our own chicken jjamppong plus a side jajangmyeon, haha. Big eaters, confirmed?!

This place has been featured by jjamppong-focused YouTube channels and even on KBS's Saengsaeng Jeongbo (Vivid Information). Now I was really getting excited.

Unlike other Chinese restaurants, there's no vinegar or chili powder on the table here — pepper is the only seasoning weapon. Adding pepper to the jjamppong gives it an even more refreshing kick.

Finally, all our food arrived. Chicken jjamppong and side jajangmyeon! Usually when two people come, they order one jjamppong and one jajangmyeon to share, but we just decided to each get two bowls, lol.

The basic side dishes were kimchi, pickled radish, and stir-fried fish cake. Honestly, pickled radish alone is enough.

What the spicy chicken-broth jjamppong tastes like

Chicken jjamppong

Even the color tells you how spicy it is. It's a fiery, spicy-style jjamppong. The broth is made from chicken, so it's rich and deeply flavorful. Highly recommended if you want to nurse a hangover after drinking. It's topped with egg as a garnish, and that turns out to be a real treat too.

Is the side jajangmyeon worth adding?

Side jajangmyeon

If you want old-school jajangmyeon, this is highly recommended. The seasoning is just right, in the style of jajangmyeon from the old days. It's great to order as a side dish to share. If you're with kids who can't handle spice, ordering jajangmyeon for them would be a good move too.

I tried it first without pepper, and I could really taste the deep umami of the rich chicken broth. It was spicy and fiery, and personally I loved that. It cured my hangover in one bite.

If you add pepper on top, it gets even more refreshing and spicy, so definitely try it that way. I still had jajangmyeon to eat, but I was worried the flavors would mix, haha, so I decided to finish the jjamppong first.

The jjamppong at this place is seriously so good!!

My friend inhaled his bowl in a flash and then ordered a bowl of rice. He kept letting out little exclamations of amazement while eating — that's how good it was.

Springy noodles in the jajangmyeon

Seasoning matters for both jjamppong and jajangmyeon — it can't be too intense or too bland. The jajangmyeon here had the seasoning down perfectly! The noodles were springy and lively too, and I kept going back for more with my chopsticks. Even after finishing the jjamppong and being full, I still couldn't stop reaching for it, haha.

Rice

Even after finishing a whole bowl of jjamppong and all the side jajangmyeon, my friend still insisted on rice, haha. I decided to steal a spoonful myself. You can add the rice to jajangmyeon to make jajangbap, or to jjamppong to make jjamppongbap — either works.

How to make jjamppongbap

I decided to make jjamppongbap. The feeling noodles give you and the feeling rice gives you are definitely different. Rice delivers a richer flavor and the aroma really comes alive. If you visit Dongne Oppa Dak Jjamppong, I'd recommend ordering the noodle version first and then adding a separate bowl of rice to mix in at the end. You'll taste something you can't get from the noodles alone.

This is a place that plenty of Yangyang locals frequent too. It only operates during lunch hours, so check the time carefully, and if you need to cure a hangover from the night before, don't hesitate — just go. As someone who's cured my own hangover here, I officially certify this as a hangover-cure hotspot, haha.
