- 🥩 Jeju-style raw pork specialty restaurant
It's only about 136 meters from Exit 1 of Gwangan Station, so it was easy to get to by subway. Walking in, instead of the flashy look of the newer barbecue places, I felt the comfortable, warm atmosphere of an old-school neighborhood spot.

We got there a bit early, before the dinner rush, but the tables filled up fast while we were eating. There seemed to be a lot of regulars dropping in naturally too, so it felt like a neighborhood favorite that's been loved for a long time haha.
What makes Myeongseung Jeju Saenggogi a Jeju pork specialist
Looking around the restaurant, it was clear Myeongseung Jeju Saenggogi has been specializing in Jeju pork for a long time. There was a certificate on the wall showing the place — under the name Myeongseung Charcoal Pork Ribs — had once been designated a certified quality restaurant for Jeju pork, for the period 2009 to 2011, which hints at just how long they've been serving Jeju pork.

The pork used for black pork belly, pork belly, raw ribs and seasoned ribs was labeled as domestic, and both the napa cabbage kimchi and rapeseed kimchi were also marked domestic. What stood out was that they sell Jeju wild bracken (fern) as a separate menu item and even serve Jeju pork noodle soup — a Jeju-flavored menu lineup that's a bit different from your typical pork rib restaurant.

The window was covered edge to edge with livestock traceability number labels for all the pork they'd used, letting you check exactly what meat you were eating — it gave me real confidence in the quality 👍. We ordered the seasoned ribs.

The restaurant was also running a receipt-review event. If you wrote a receipt review and showed it to staff, you'd get a free beer or soju — we were just there for a meal so we didn't claim it, but worth knowing if you visit!

Free side dishes: bracken egg pancake and mustard leaf kimchi
The basic side dishes at Myeongseung Jeju Saenggogi came with a generous amount of lettuce wraps, plus scallion strips, kimchi, garlic and ssamjang (dipping sauce) — a nice range of things to eat alongside the seasoned ribs.

Among the side dishes was an egg pancake fried with bracken mixed in, which was pretty unusual haha. It looked delicious so I tried it first. The egg was soft and savory, and the bracken inside wasn't tough at all — it was surprisingly tender, and the combination worked really well haha. The mustard leaf kimchi served alongside was well fermented too, with a nice tangy flavor and aroma.
When the side dishes are good, you already trust the rest of the food, right? Here, every single side dish was made with care, so I was excited even before the ribs arrived.

How did the seasoned pork ribs taste?
They kept flipping the meat back and forth on the grill so it wouldn't burn, letting the seasoning really soak in while the surface turned an appetizing golden brown.
The glossy sheen made my mouth water just looking at it haha.

Just as I'd hoped, the seasoning on the ribs wasn't too sweet or harsh — it was just right, tasty even on its own. Wrapping a piece of meat in lettuce with some scallion strips and garlic made it even better haha.

Finishing with Jeju pork noodle soup and naengmyeon
Places doing Jeju pork noodle soup aren't that common, so it was something I wanted to try even before visiting. Even though I was already fairly full from the meat, it felt like a waste to skip it, so we added both pork noodle soup and naengmyeon (cold noodles) haha.

The Jeju pork noodle soup came with noodles and plenty of pork in a milky broth, topped with scallions, sesame seeds and chili flakes — it looked delicious.

The first sip of the milky broth had a deep, rich pork flavor that was still surprisingly clean — genuinely delicious. Seasoning it to taste with the salted shrimp served alongside brought out even more savory depth, and the generous amount of pork on top had no off-smell and was tender, pairing well with the noodles. I was glad I'd ordered it since I'd been wanting Jeju pork noodle soup so much haha. Most barbecue places finish with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) or naengmyeon, so being able to follow Jeju pork with Jeju pork noodle soup felt like this place's own signature.

The naengmyeon came in a cool broth with bits of ice floating on top, topped with noodles, seasoning, radish and egg — refreshing after the sweetish seasoned ribs. A piece of seasoned rib went well with the naengmyeon too, so ordering one pork noodle soup and one naengmyeon to share was a good move.

What to order on a second visit to Myeongseung Jeju Saenggogi
Overall, what stuck with me about Myeongseung Jeju Saenggogi was being able to enjoy pork and Jeju-flavored dishes together in a comfortable, warm atmosphere rather than the flashy style of trendy barbecue places these days — the sign reading 'good people, good meat' fit the place perfectly.
Every dish was so good that I got curious about their kimchi jjigae and doenjang jjigae too, but I was too full to try them — a little disappointing haha. Next time we're planning to go back and grill up black pork belly loaded with Jeju wild bracken, then try the doenjang jjigae and kimchi jjigae! That's how much I liked it — a place I want to return to. We had a filling meal from seasoned ribs to Jeju pork noodle soup and cool naengmyeon, and since it's so close to Gwangan Station, I'd recommend it if you're craving Jeju pork or pork ribs around Gwangalli 👍
