Cheonan Sinbu-dong gyukatsu restaurant with a 20-minute wait: Izawa

In short

Izawa Cheonan Sinbu-dong Branch is a gyukatsu (Japanese beef cutlet) restaurant on Meokgeori 10-gil in Sinbu-dong, Cheonan. Arriving for a late lunch, the writer waited about 20 minutes, then ordered Set Menu B (two gyukatsu set meals plus drinks, 35,000 won) and grilled each slice on a tabletop mini brazier, the cutlet crisp outside and rare inside and tender enough to eat without much chewing. With an extra hour of parking covered at Sinbu Public Parking Lot No. 5, Izawa made for a relaxed meal with a friend.

Off to Cheonan to see a friend who recently changed jobs there. She said she's been having a tough time adjusting, so I went to cheer her on. She recommended a gyukatsu place in Sinbu-dong, Cheonan, so let me introduce it here.

Izawa Cheonan Sinbu-dong Branch is a well-known date spot for gyukatsu in Sinbu-dong. If Daejeon has Eunhaeng-jeongi Street, this street felt similar — lots of young people and foreigners, and a pretty lively vibe.

The restaurant is on the 2nd floor of the building, so it was fairly easy to find.

You can park at Sinbu Public Parking Lot No. 5 — the first 30 minutes are free, and the restaurant gives an extra hour on top, so we had a comfortable 1.5 hours of parking. The rate was also reasonable, which made it easy to use without worry.

Inside Izawa: the room and the 20-minute wait

Even during a late lunch, there was a wait at Izawa Cheonan Sinbu-dong Branch — we waited about 20 minutes at the waiting bench before being seated. One side of the restaurant is decorated with cherry blossom trees in full bloom.

Even though we visited during a late lunch, it was popular enough — true to its reputation as a top gyukatsu spot in Cheonan — that we still had a wait. We chatted with my friend at the waiting bench for about 20 minutes before being seated.

How does gyukatsu grilled on a mini brazier taste?

Izawa's gyukatsu set meal comes with gyukatsu, cabbage salad, sesame sauce and bonito soy sauce, miso soup, and rice. The gyukatsu is fried crisp on the outside while staying rare inside, meant to be finished off by grilling it yourself on the mini brazier at the table.

You just place a slice or two on the mini brazier at the table and grill it to your own taste.

I put a tiny bit of wasabi on and took a bite — wow, so tender! It was soft enough that you could practically eat it without teeth.

Crisp outside, tender inside — the texture was really great.

A piece of gyukatsu being grilled on the brazier

Chatting away with my friend, we slowly savored each bite, grilling piece after piece on the mini brazier. The tenderness paired with the sesame and bonito special sauce — every piece that disappeared into my mouth was so good it was almost a shame haha.

Kim Apple's verdict on Izawa Cheonan Sinbu-dong

Izawa Cheonan Sinbu-dong Branch had that thin, crispy coating typical of gyukatsu along with a texture so soft it melted in your mouth — I loved it. It was also great being able to place each piece on the mini brazier and grill it to exactly the doneness I wanted, at my own pace.

On top of that, without us even asking, the staff kept an eye on the brazier and topped up the fire whenever it got weak, and paid careful attention to the grill plate too — that thoughtfulness made the meal even more pleasant. Both the food and the service were satisfying, making this a Cheonan gyukatsu spot I'd recommend to anyone who loves gyukatsu.
