I went out for meat in Gwangalli for the first time in a while :) This isn't just a plain samgyeopsal place — they use pork aged for 480 hours, so it's worth a visit if you love meat.

It's about a 15-minute walk from Gwangan Station Exit 3. There are lots of good restaurants nearby and it's not far from Gwangalli Beach either, so access is pretty good.

Where to park at this Gwangalli barbecue restaurant

You can park at the Seohee Starhills Centum Primo officetel right across the street, and they support up to 2 hours. It's hard to find parking in Gwangalli, so this is great for anyone driving haha. The lot is big too, so you don't need to worry about parking.

Donbegi Gwang-an Branch sign and hanok-style exterior in the alley

Walk into the alley and the Donbegi sign catches your eye right away! The whole exterior has a hanok (traditional Korean house) feel, so it has a bit more atmosphere than your average barbecue place. Pets are welcome too, which I love🐶

First-floor hall and second-floor private rooms on a Friday night

Donbegi Gwang-an Branch is split between the first and second floors. The first floor is mostly one big hall, and the tables aren't cramped, which I liked. There were plenty of tables, but when I visited on a Friday evening it was pretty much full. If you're going on a weekend, there might be a wait!

The second floor has private rooms where you can eat more privately. The spaces are divided by curtains, so it's good for a date or a slightly quieter family meal. Apparently it's also a popular spot for group gatherings and company dinners.

Donbegi is also known for its wine — one wall is lined with wine bottles — and then the most important part, the aged pork!! You can see the aged meat as soon as you walk in🥹

If you leave a Naver receipt review, you can choose one of: cold kalguksu (noodle soup), Geumsa-dong cold kimchi kalguksu, ttukbaegi kalguksu, myeongran rice, or honeycomb pork skin — definitely recommend doing this!

Set and à la carte menu board at Donbegi Gwang-an Branch

What we ordered: 540g ogeopsal, myeongran rice and cola

They have everything from set menus to à la carte to meal dishes, so it's easy to order. There's even a pork omakase haha.

  • Ogeopsal (pork belly) 540g
  • Myeongran (pollock roe) rice
  • Cola

Side dishes including white kimchi, shredded scallion, radish salad, and myeongran

The banchan (side dishes) included white kimchi, shredded scallion, radish salad, myeongran, and wasabi — a nice range of sides to eat with the meat. If you need anything extra or want lettuce wraps, you can use the self-serve bar.

Ogeopsal: seared first, then grilled at the table by staff

The ogeopsal came pre-grilled, so there was no long wait and you could eat right away. Grilled once more over charcoal, the outside browned nicely and you could really taste the smoky char. The portion was huge too haha.

What I really liked about Donbegi is the grilling service — a staff member cuts it into bite-sized pieces and grills it for you, which makes it so easy to eat.

Close-up of the finished aged ogeopsal

Can you see how juicy it looks? The outside was crispy and the inside stayed juicy — proper crispy-outside, juicy-inside texture. Because it's pork belly, the skin part was chewy and delicious, and there was zero gamey smell!!

The meat itself is so savory that you could eat it with just a dab of wasabi, but I'm a myeongran lover so I ate it with myeongran, and it cut through the richness a bit and was so good.

My sweetie wrapped some ssam (lettuce wraps) for me too~~ (I remember they really loved the gungchae namul once they tried it wrapped in the ssam). There were so many banchan to go with it, which was nice.

Myeongran rice at Donbegi Gwang-an Branch

Myeongran rice: the reason to come back to Donbegi

The myeongran rice has myeongran (pollock roe) on top of warm rice, and you could really taste the salty, savory flavor. The distinctive umami of myeongran goes so well with the rice, and adding a piece of meat on top brings a saltier, oddly addictive combination!

Eating the myeongran with rice, seaweed flakes, mayonnaise, and chives all in one bite — savory, salty, amazing💛 I'd come back here just for this, so if you love myeongran, I highly recommend the myeongran rice.
