You can't talk about Gangneung without mentioning Chodang sundubu (soft tofu). Wanting to try a proper, carefully prepared meal from a certified cooking master, I visited Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu, a well-known Gangneung restaurant. It especially won my trust because they use 100% domestic soybeans, grown by local residents themselves!
From the sundubu jjigae — deep savory flavor without being overly rich — to the soft, moist boiled pork, to the sweet-and-spicy braised pollock that hooked my appetite, it was a proper, generous spread. Let me show you my honest review of the Myeongpum table at Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu, a Gangneung Chodang sundubu favorite.

Weekend lunch with a Naver booking: is there a wait?
Inside, Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu has a warm, clean, no-frills atmosphere and is quite comfortable. With a mix of 4-seat and 8-seat tables, the crowd was varied — families traveling together, friends, couples on dates.
I went for weekend lunch after making a Naver reservation, and luckily got seated with no wait. If I'd been a bit later, I might have had to wait after all...

What comes with the Myeongpum table for 4 at 25,000 won each
Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu, a Gangneung Chodang sundubu favorite, has the Chodang Myeongpum table as its signature dish, alongside the Chodang Tofu table, Tofu Samhap (boiled pork), Chodang Tofu Hot Pot, and Chodang Sundubu Jjigae.

Myeongpum table, ₩25,000 x 4 / sundubu jjigae + tofu samhap (boiled pork) + spicy braised pollock

Wanting to try a bit of everything, we ordered the Myeongpum table, a generous spread that comes with sundubu jjigae, tofu samhap (boiled pork), and spicy braised pollock.

Also came with salad, cheongpomuk (mung bean jelly), seasoned seaweed, napa cabbage kimchi, stir-fried cauliflower, and wrap vegetables.

The sundubu jjigae and tofu samhap (boiled pork) were served first.

Tofu samhap: boiled pork, whole tofu and gajami-sikhae
The tofu samhap arrived neatly arranged — boiled pork, whole tofu (modubu), and gajami-sikhae (fermented flounder with rice and chili). Eating properly made, nutty, clean-tasting whole tofu after so long was moving — truly the best of the best.

The spicy braised pollock arrived too, giving off a savory aroma! Had to get a group shot in.

For the sundubu jjigae, you stir in the seasoning packet, bring it to a boil, then dig in.

The boiled pork had zero funky smell, was tender and soft, and the fat-to-meat ratio was just right — chef's kiss.

Salted shrimp, ssamjang, chili, and garlic came alongside too — plated as the winning combo.

Topping the boiled pork with the tangy-sweet gajami-sikhae and eating it in one wrap made for a truly perfect combination.

Soft tofu hot pot with blue crab and river shrimp
The sundubu jjigae had crab and river shrimp in it, giving it a really clean, savory depth that was outstanding!
The fluffy soft tofu had a delicate texture that kept my spoon going back for more. I savored the sweet, deep, clean flavor unique to Chodang tofu, and the cleanness really stood out.

Spicy grilled half-dried pollock, and why we ordered extra rice
The spicy braised pollock is made from thick pollock, fried and then braised in sauce, so the sweet-spicy seasoning soaked right into the flesh — so good 🤤. It was so soft and moist that we couldn't help but order an extra bowl of rice.

Why Jeong Eunsuk Chodang Sundubu suits a meal with parents
