Gangneung abalone restaurant, rice-paddy view lunch: Haenyeo Village
In short
Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village is a Korean restaurant specialising in abalone dishes near Gangmun Beach in Gangneung. From a second-floor window seat overlooking rice paddies, the pressure-cooked abalone porridge for two arrived with a haenyeo seafood table of raw abalone, sea squirt, sea cucumber, scallop and boiled octopus, and the sea cucumber — a first try — was tender rather than chewy. At 25,000 won per person, Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village makes a satisfying restorative lunch on a Gangneung trip.

While traveling around Gangneung, I visited Jeonbok Haenyeo Village near Gangmun Beach, known as a go-to lunch spot in the area.

This Gangneung lunch spot is in its own large standalone building, so it's easy to spot even from a distance.

There's plenty of parking in front of and around the restaurant, so it's easy to park.

Second-floor window seats with rice-paddy views inside Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village
As soon as you walk into Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, a big floor-to-ceiling window catches your eye. From the second floor, a wide green rice-paddy view spreads out beyond the glass, so there's no sense of closeness at all.

The interior is clean and gives off an upscale feel, so I felt good throughout the meal. The dining hall is huge and the tables are spaced generously.

Menu and prices at Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village
It's a Gangneung lunch spot packed with seafood caught directly by professional haenyeo (female sea divers) — there was an explanation posted, but I forgot to photograph it, haha.

Looking at the menu, there's a varied lineup of abalone dishes — from the basic pressure-cooked abalone porridge to the special abalone perilla seaweed soup and even an abalone butter-grilled set.

What comes with the abalone porridge for two: the haenyeo seafood table
The pressure-cooked abalone porridge set arrives neatly laid out on a big traditional tray.

Besides the main abalone porridge, the haenyeo table brings out a variety of seafood — seasoned raw fish, cold boiled pork, flounder, sea squirt, sea cucumber, raw abalone, scallop, mussels, whelk, and even herring roe — it's abundant.

Raw abalone, sea squirt, boiled octopus, steamed scallop, whelk, grilled flounder, boiled pork — the spread was really substantial. I loved getting to taste a little of many different ocean-scented seafoods.

The side dishes — green onion kimchi, salted squid, and well-fermented kimchi — went perfectly with the abalone porridge too. None of the seafood had any fishy smell; it all felt genuinely fresh.

The freshly steamed scallops and whelk were fresh and lively.

Here's the full shot with the abalone porridge plus the entire haenyeo table seafood spread loaded on. It came out so generously that I felt truly spoiled — the food looked clean and beautiful, great for photos too.

How did the pressure-cooked abalone porridge taste?
The abalone porridge comes out in a big pressure pot, and the portion is genuinely generous. Scooping it with a ladle, you can see it's loaded with abalone innards, giving it a deep green color.

There's plenty of thinly sliced abalone meat in there too, so it's nice to chew on. Since it's slow-cooked in the pressure pot, the rice grains are soft and fully broken down.
Taking a big spoonful of porridge topped with chewy scallop meat is a great combination. The savory, deep flavor of the innards spreads through your mouth. It's not overly seasoned and tastes clean, so it's easy to eat without feeling heavy, whether for breakfast or lunch.

Trying sea cucumber for the first time, plus sea squirt and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup)
My first-ever sea cucumber! I dipped it lightly in vinegared chili paste. It was boiled just right — not chewy at all but tender, and the texture was really good.

The sea squirt and sea cucumber that came with it were strongly scented with the sea, so seafood lovers will be very satisfied.

This is mulhoe (cold raw fish soup)! It was nice and crunchy.
Is Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village worth it? Final verdict
I feel like I had a proper restorative meal on this Gangneung trip. The view through the big window was impressive, and the restaurant was pleasant, so I ate comfortably. The abalone porridge had a deep, rich flavor, and the accompanying seafood side spread was so generous that it didn't feel like a waste of money at all. Recommended if you're looking for a Gangneung breakfast or lunch spot!
