Gangneung abalone porridge restaurant with free whelk: Haenyeo Village

I went to Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village near Gangmun Beach, a place where you can properly enjoy abalone porridge and a haenyeo (female diver) table for breakfast-slash-lunch 🐟🐡🐚💗 I'd been saving it as both a Gangneung breakfast spot and a Gangneung lunch spot, and I finally made it there!

Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village is at 286-1 Haean-ro, Gangneung-si, Gangwon-do, near St. John's Hotel and Shilla Monogram. It's open Mon, Wed–Sun 08:00–15:30, closed every Tuesday. Reservations, WiFi, baby chairs, and group seating are all available.

It's right by Gangmun Beach and close to hotels like St. John's and Shilla Monogram, so it worked really well both as a Gangneung breakfast stop and as a lunch spot mid-trip!

The building exterior has a haenyeo character painted right on it, so it stood out even from a distance. The sign clearly reads "Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village" in big letters, so there's no way to get confused.

Abalone porridge is for two or more, 25,000 won per person

The banner at the entrance said that ordering the abalone porridge gets you the whole haenyeo table. It starts at ₩25,000 per person, and the minimum order is for 2 people, so I'd recommend going with company rather than solo.

It was also impressive that it's cooked in a pressure pot the moment you order — not made ahead of time, but cooked fresh on the spot, which gave me confidence in the freshness.

Parking space was more than plenty, so there was zero worry about that 🚗🚗

Inside the first-floor hall and the haenyeo diver story

Walking into the first floor of Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village, you first see a spacious hall with tablet ordering systems at every table, so self-ordering was easy and convenient 😊 Even though I visited around 11am, there were already quite a few customers!

On the wall there was a mural and real photos introducing a "sanggun haenyeo" (top-tier diver). Reading that a master-level diver who can dive 10–20 meters and hold her breath for 1–2 minutes personally harvests the abalone, conch, and sea squirt made me feel this wasn't just a concept — there's a real story behind it.

Baby chairs are available too, for reference!

Second-floor rice-paddy view hall and private rooms

The stairs up to the second floor are painted with a diving haenyeo motif, so the "abalone haenyeo village" concept comes through clearly from the stairs onward.

The main hall on the second floor is a full window-wall structure with an open view of wide fields and pine forest, plus white curtains and chandelier lighting — the interior had way more atmosphere than expected. A rice-paddy view this close to the sea was a surprising touch!

There are also rooms on the second floor, so it looked comfortable for families or larger groups too.

Self-serve banchan bar and kiosk ordering

The self-serve bar had several kinds of banchan (side dishes) ready, like green onion kimchi and white kimchi, and you could take as much extra as you wanted on top of what came with the meal.

What comes with the 50,000 won abalone porridge for two?

What I ordered at Gangneung Jeonbok Haenyeo Village was the pressure-pot abalone porridge for two — ₩50,000.

And here comes the haenyeo table! On a bamboo tray came raw abalone, scallops, steamed mussels, steamed whelk, herring roe jeotgal, cold boiled pork, grilled fish, and wrapping greens, all laid out at once. Looking at it all, it was a happy dilemma figuring out what to eat first.

You could really taste the freshness of the seafood, and having both raw seafood and steamed seafood together made it fun to pick and choose.

And then the main event, the abalone porridge! Fresh out of the pressure pot, it had a glossy sheen you could tell was made with care. With the abalone innards mixed in, it had a deep green color, and the savory, slightly salty flavor kept pulling my spoon back in.

It's not a spicy soup-based dish but a hearty, gentle meal that settles the stomach, so it was perfect either as a Gangneung breakfast or as a hangover cure!
