In short
Bored & Hungry Mapo is an American-style burger restaurant next to Gyeongui Line Forest Park in Mapo, Seoul, about 5 minutes on foot from Exit 4 of Daeheung Station. Over a Sunday lunch, two of us shared the O.G Champion burger, regular fries, butter garlic fries, a vanilla shake and the Salt&Pepper Virgin Shake; the same set with a soda instead runs 19,900 won. A Sunday lunch, with the weekend already slipping away. To soothe the disappointment, my friend and I headed to Bored & Hungry Mapo by Gyeongui Line Forest Park. This time I was determined to properly enjoy the fries + milkshake combo, so I got up at dawn and ran 16km before coming haha. Running first before facing high-calorie food — that's the code of conduct for a conscientious eater.

Where is Bored & Hungry Mapo and how do you get there?
Bored & Hungry Mapo is about a 5-minute walk from Exit 4 of Daeheung Station. I find the Gyeongui-Jungang Line more convenient, so I walked about 10 minutes from Exit 1 of Seogang University Station. You just follow along Gyeongui Line Forest Park the whole way, so it was an easy walk. Browsing the shops nearby, you'll arrive before you know it! The exterior alone has real presence. With a big BORED & HUNGRY sign, a burger illustration, and flashy graphics, it's hard to just walk past.

There are lots of cafés around, and it's nice for a leisurely stroll, so this could make a great date course too — burger, walk along Gyeongui Line Forest Park, then coffee.
American diner atmosphere inside Bored & Hungry Mapo
Walking into Bored & Hungry Mapo, the black-and-white checkered floor, yellow chairs, and red tile walls catch your eye right away. Between the posters and props on the walls, it really felt like an American diner. From the window seats you can see the trees outside, so you get to enjoy the colorful interior and the Gyeongui Line Forest Park scenery at the same time. On one side there's a service station with sauces and utensils. And true to a place with real backbone, they even have nitrile gloves ready!

How to order and what we ate at Bored & Hungry Mapo
You order at Bored & Hungry Mapo by scanning the table's QR code or NFC tag to reach the web menu. This time we ordered the O.G Champion burger with fries, and two sets that came with shakes.
The prices reflect what we ordered that day. The same menu with a soda instead comes to ₩19,900, but today was all about racing here specifically for the shake combo! No settling for soda today haha.
O.G Champion burger: how the competition recipe tastes
After reading the menu description for the O.G Champion, there was no way I could skip it. It's introduced as "the burger that won America's national burger competition hosted by ABC's morning show Good Morning America in 2022." How could I pass that up haha. It follows the competition recipe as-is, so it's on the saltier side, with a note that you can ask them to tone it down. I love that American flavor, so I ordered it as is.

Even from the photo, the patty has serious presence. The deeply seared edges spilling out past the bun, cheese melting through the gaps! You can tell before even taking a bite that this can't possibly taste weak haha. The build is simple: two patties and two slices of cheese between soft buns, well-charred onions and sauce, and your choice of pickles or jalapeños.
Simple, but the flavor is seriously powerful. It really feels like a whole cow running wild in your mouth! First, the bun was fluffy and soft. Some places disappoint with buns that get squished and gummy, but here the bun itself won me over. And the most impressive part was how crispy the outside of the patty was! Calling it just "crispy outside, juicy inside" doesn't cut it. This is more like extra-crispy outside, juicy inside haha. Once you get to the part where melted cheese has crisped up together with the patty, you really feel that crunch. And yet it's still packed with juice inside, so you have to be careful not to drip on your clothes.
Take a big bite that includes the dill pickle, and intense beefy aroma, savory umami, and salty cheese flavor fill your mouth first. Add the sweetness of the grilled onion, and you've got a proper sweet-and-salty combo! The tangy-sweet pickle with its faint dill note cuts through it a bit and cleans things up, but…
One pickle alone can't handle all this saltiness and richness. Whatever lingers gets passed straight on to the shake haha. This kind of American-style burger needs to be a bit salty to taste right — that's exactly what makes the vanilla shake even more tempting.
Regular fries vs butter garlic fries at Bored & Hungry Mapo
The regular fries at Bored & Hungry Mapo have a seasoning style that reminded me of Mom's Touch fries. The thin fries were evenly coated in seasoning and easy to pick up. The butter garlic fries are thick, zigzag-cut crinkle fries loaded with sauce. The two are different in shape, so it was fun to alternate between them. The butter garlic sauce in particular leaned savory garlic-butter rather than sweet. So to my taste, the sweet vanilla shake paired better with it than a soda would.

A bite of burger, a fry, a sip of shake — the pre-dawn run finally felt worth it. Of course, I can't take responsibility for the calories. If the rest of you run 10km+ and then eat like this... you might end up gaining weight like me hahaha.

What does the Salt&Pepper Virgin Shake taste like?
My friend picked the regular vanilla shake, while I went for the Salt&Pepper Virgin Shake, curious just from the name. Served in a stainless steel cup, it fit the shop's vibe well too. What I ordered was a vanilla shake topped with salt, pepper, and extra virgin olive oil! Just looking at the top, it clearly looked different from a regular shake.

Not knowing better, I scooped from the very top first and was startled at how salty it was. Then trying to eat the melted part on top, a whole mouthful of olive oil hit me at once — startled a second time haha. For my taste, lightly mixing the toppings in worked better. Don't let it catch you off guard the way it did me haha.
The Champion burger is salty, and the butter garlic fries lean salty rather than sweet, so this sweet shake really completes the set. The shake soothes the saltiness lingering in your mouth, then the burger and fries fill your mouth back up with flavor once it's gotten too sweet.
Salty → sweet → salty → sweet. If only money and stomach capacity allowed, this cycle could go on forever haha.
Is Bored & Hungry Mapo one of the best burger restaurants in Seoul?
Leaving Bored & Hungry Mapo, I felt like I'd finally had a real burger again after a while. The combo of the extra-crispy salty patty, sweet grilled onions, and soft bun was just so good. And on top of that, the vanilla shake that completes any proper American burger set! For my taste, it was satisfying enough to call it one of the best burger places in Korea.
If you love a rich, meaty, salty American-style burger, Bored & Hungry Mapo near Daeheung Station is worth remembering. If you're sensitive to salt, keep in mind you can ask them to adjust it when ordering.

A Sunday lunch spent thoroughly enjoying burger, fries, and shake by Gyeongui Line Forest Park. My food-loving instincts fully exploded again today. Me, running 16km at dawn — great job hahaha.
