Hi, this is Rittoh. 🍞🍞 Mornings and evenings already feel like fall, but it's still around 28 degrees during the day, so I figured I should eat somewhere with soft natural light pouring in.

A terrace still felt like too much, so I went with MELA Hongdae, which has both great food and a great atmosphere.
I'm always on the hunt for European-feeling brunch cafés, and today's MELA leans Italian specifically. 🇮🇹🇮🇹 It's full of Italian home-style dishes, so even people watching what they eat can fill up here without worry.

The restaurant sits between Hongik University Station and Hapjeong, and walking over slowly in the sunshine from the station put me in such a good mood I was practically humming. There were a lot of people already eating when I arrived :)

Why MELA Hongdae works for a wedding invitation gathering: parking and group tables
MELA Hongdae is inside the Nudite building, so parking support is available too — which makes it a perfect Seoul wedding-invitation gathering spot. Parking at brunch cafés is usually so hard that I end up taking public transit a lot!

With the Naver Reservation system, I booked easily and got seated with no wait. Seating is assigned in order, but if you leave a note, they seem to accommodate it as much as they can :)
Luckily I came outside peak hours, so I got to sit where I wanted, and the table in the center looked great for a group gathering :) It fits five or more, so I'm planning to book here again next time I have a group meetup :)

How to order at MELA Hongdae and what's on the menu
At MELA Hongdae, you pick from the menu placed at each table, then go to the counter to order and pay.

There's currently a Naver promotion giving away truffle fries, so if you didn't already order a separate side, it's worth trying alongside your meal.
The dishes are made from recipes developed by a culinary researcher trained at Italy's ICIF cooking school, so it couldn't really taste bad.

These days a lot of people are watching what they eat, which makes picking a menu tough sometimes — but there's no need to worry here!

MELA's signature MELA's chuck flap steak lets you load up on protein, and the salad menu covers fiber too — a perfectly balanced meal of carbs, protein, and fat that's just right for the bride and groom at a wedding gathering.

I was curious about the pasta and gnocchi too, but today I went with the best-seller salmon eggs Benedict, added sausage (₩3,000), and decided to try the bingsu (shaved ice dessert) for dessert.

I visited right around the end of peach season, so they said they're now prepping the next seasonal bingsu :) 🥧🥧 *Cinnamon-hongsi (ripe persimmon) cream bingsu... I'm definitely coming back for that :) With that ordered, I headed back to my seat to relax for a bit.

Inside MELA Hongdae: natural light and the large center table
Sitting facing the sunlight streaming through the window frames, I felt like I was resting even though I wasn't really doing anything. The softly playing music helped me feel refreshed too.
While waiting, I looked around and could tell every corner had been thought through. There were coat hooks and a hanger rack so you're not uncomfortable while eating — perfect for hanging a jacket around this time of year.

How the salmon eggs Benedict and peach bingsu tasted
Today's order, the salmon eggs Benedict, came out quickly.

The plating was clean, and it wasn't just bread — there was carrot rapée and salad too, which helped with fullness.

The tangy sauce paired well with the salad, and the poached egg on top of the bread was in such good condition — pure nuttiness.

Popping the yolk — my little moment of healing...

Right as I was finishing up, I asked for the bingsu — perfect timing for dessert!

It's a milk-ice base, so it never got watery even toward the end, and it was piled high with peaches — I think I can hold out until next summer now :)

I left feeling good, like the owner's bright energy had rubbed off on me — a really pleasant meal at MELA Hongdae :)
