Family bossam dinner with kids at Bossam Ae Kalguksu, Seongnam

In short

Bossam Ae Kalguksu Seongnam Sangdaewon Branch is a Korean restaurant in Sangdaewon-dong, Seongnam, serving gabrisal bossam (pork belly wrap) with free kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup). The writer visited with a two-year-old and a son, ordering three servings of the bossam special set, and found the kids' menu, baby chair, and unlimited rice made it an easy family meal. Great value for a family outing.

Dining out prices these days are honestly scary. Just grabbing one meal easily runs over ₩10,000, so when I heard the prices at this new spot in Sangdaewon-dong, I was surprised once — and after eating, surprised again.

Exterior of Bossam Ae Kalguksu in Sangdaewon-dong

It's called Bossam Ae Kalguksu! As the name suggests, the signature menu items are bossam (boiled pork wrap) and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup). What I liked most was the price — the bossam set is just ₩10,000, and if you order bossam, the kalguksu comes free. And it's not just any bossam, it's gabrisal (pork shoulder blade meat) bossam! The price was so good I had to check it out, and after eating I thought, 'This place is a real value find!'

The atmosphere and meat serving times

Bossam Ae Kalguksu recently opened in Sangdaewon-dong. Walking in, the space was bigger and cleaner than I expected — a great first impression. The tables aren't cramped and the overall vibe is comfortable, good for a family meal. It's open daily from 11 AM to 10 PM, so there's plenty of time to visit for lunch or dinner. One thing worth noting: meat is served at specific times — 11 AM, 3 PM, and 7 PM. If you're coming for bossam, it's good to keep those times in mind.

Bar-style solo dining seats by the window

Seating for solo diners and families alike

There are bar-style seats by the window, and I saw quite a few people eating alone there — clearly a solo-dining-friendly spot too. They also had baby chairs and kids' tableware ready, which made it easy to visit with children. We came with our kids and had no trouble at all.

Bossam set for just ₩10,000 — plus a kids' menu

The first thing that caught my eye on the menu was, of course, the price. Bossam set for ₩10,000! In this economy, that's really something. If you want a heartier portion, the special set is ₩13,000. We ordered three servings of the special set, which comes with more meat.

There's also a separate kids' menu — the kids' bossam set is ₩7,000! When dining out with children, having a dedicated kids' menu instead of splitting an adult portion is so much more convenient. And rice refills are unlimited, which is great news for big eaters haha.

Free kalguksu with your bossam order

Here's the thing to remember about Bossam Ae Kalguksu: order bossam and the kalguksu comes free. Came for bossam and got noodles too! They brought out the kalguksu first, right after we ordered. It's cooked at the table in a bubbling pot — a seafood-based broth that smells refreshing from the first whiff. Simmering it while waiting for the bossam to arrive worked out perfectly.

Gabrisal bossam — 130g per person in the special set

After a short wait, the gabrisal bossam finally arrived! Wow, the meat looks different from regular bossam right off the bat. Using gabrisal means the meat is sliced into long strips, and it looked really appetizing. The special set gives about 130g per person, so the portion was quite generous. Looking closer, the ratio of lean meat to fat was excellent. Too much lean meat and bossam gets dry; too much fat and it's greasy — but this had just the right marbling running through it, looking moist and tender at a glance.

I picked up a piece with my chopsticks and tried it plain. Wow... the meat is really moist. Tender and soft on the outside, and as you chew, the mild savory aroma unique to gabrisal comes through. The lean part is clean-tasting without being dry, and the fat melts softly in, giving a moist finish. Because it's gabrisal, the texture felt a bit firmer than regular bossam, but still soft to chew, not tough at all — great texture overall.

A bite with musaengchae (spicy radish salad)

Bossam calls for musaengchae. I put a bite of crisp radish salad on top of a moist piece of bossam, and the sweet-and-sour, slightly spicy seasoning really brought out the clean, savory flavor of the meat. The meat's softness and the radish's crunch together in one bite made for great texture. Add a spoonful of rice on top and, well, what more is there to say haha. Anyone who loves bossam will love this combo!

Could my two-year-old eat it too?

My son dipped his bossam right into saeujeot (salted shrimp). A little of that briny saltiness made the clean flavor of the meat stand out even more, and he ate it happily. Our two-year-old Jenny ate it well too — since the meat was so soft and moist. When dining out with kids, tough meat is often a problem, but here it was soft enough that both kids could eat comfortably.

Unlimited rice and fresh geotjeori kimchi

No need to worry about running out of rice either — you can grab unlimited refills at the side dish counter. One bowl isn't always enough when you're eating bossam, so being able to freely get more made for a satisfying meal.

Among the side dishes, what stood out most was the geotjeori (freshly tossed kimchi) that tasted just-made. Bossam and geotjeori is always a winning combo. Crisp, fresh kimchi piled onto a moist piece of bossam — the savory meat and the refreshing, spicy kimchi kept me going back for more.

The taste of the seafood-broth kalguksu

As we worked through the bossam, the kalguksu simmering on the table finished cooking. It's a seafood-based broth, bubbled up nicely. The noodles were soft and chewy, and the broth was really refreshing. The umami from the seafood came through in every spoonful — after a few bites of bossam, a spoonful of that broth cleaned the palate right up.

The combination was especially good — rich, savory bossam followed by refreshing kalguksu broth. The noodles were soft enough for the kids to eat too. I came thinking this was a bossam place, but the kalguksu was so good I had to admit, 'this is also a kalguksu place!' Being able to enjoy both without ordering them separately is a real perk.

₩3,000 off for takeout

Besides dining in, there's a takeout perk too — ₩3,000 off bossam for takeout. Great for days you want to eat bossam comfortably at home. They also have bossam lunchboxes, which seem good for a quick office lunch or simple takeout meal. If you work in Sangdaewon-dong, it's a solid lunch recommendation!

Getting this quality of bossam and kalguksu together at this price is honestly unbelievable value. If you've been looking for a new go-to restaurant in Sangdaewon-dong, I really recommend Bossam Ae Kalguksu. 👍 It was satisfying enough that I'd love to try getting it as takeout at home next time.
