Bangi station gopchang hot pot with fresh Japanese udon: Horanggul

In short

Horanggul Bangi Branch is a beef gopchang (tripe) restaurant in the Bangi-dong food alley in Songpa, Seoul, where wood-partitioned seats feel like a Japanese back-alley izakaya. The beef gopchang hot pot for two came with an extra portion of fresh Japanese udon noodles, added once the broth had reduced, and the noodles soaked up so much of the gopchang broth that the pot was scraped clean. For a gopchang hot pot with real atmosphere near Jamsil or Bangi station, Horanggul Bangi Branch delivers.

Horanggul Bangi Branch is a beef daechang (large intestine) and gopchang (tripe) specialty restaurant in the Bangi-dong restaurant alley, and its signature dish is beef gopchang hot pot. It's open daily 11:00–24:00 with a break time of 15:00–17:00, and last order is at 23:00. The weather's been up and down morning and evening lately, and by the time I clock off work I'm craving something spicy and rich with a deep, heavy broth. So many of you must be looking for meetup spots or good restaurants around Jamsil or Bangi stations in the Bangi-dong restaurant alley, right? I wanted somewhere a bit special with real atmosphere instead of the usual meat place, so I searched like crazy, and a friend recommended a spot I ended up visiting. I found a place that nails both atmosphere and taste. It's Horanggul Bangi Branch, a beef daechang specialty restaurant in the Bangi-dong restaurant alley!

The exterior grabs your attention right away. The overall warm wood-tone interior with the sign hanging just so gives off the feel of stumbling into a hidden izakaya tucked in a Japanese back alley.

As befits a popular restaurant, there's a 'Tableing' waitlist kiosk set up right at the entrance — solid proof that waiting is a must during peak hours! The standing sign out front also listed day-by-day lunch discount menus in detail, so it looks like a great value option for office workers nearby coming in for lunch too.

Inside Horanggul Bangi Branch: seating and izakaya-style atmosphere

Inside Horanggul Bangi Branch, wood partitions divide the tables into reasonably private sections, so it works well for a Jamsil date or a Bangi-dong work dinner. Stepping inside, you get the illusion of walking into a genuine local izakaya in a back alley of Fukuoka or Osaka, Japan.

It was really nice to chat without being disturbed by the surroundings. It doesn't feel like a loud, chaotic regular restaurant, so it's absolutely perfect for a Jamsil date course! The soft lighting makes for good photos too, and the vibe is great.

Lifting the lid after the hot pot simmers on the burner

After a bit of waiting, the main dish finally appeared! It comes in a heavy, pretty earthenware-style hot pot with the lid still on, and it simmers away for a set time on the burner at the table. The delicious smell starts wafting up, and when the timer goes off and you lift the lid... you genuinely let out a cheer haha.

Beef gopchang hot pot topped with tofu, chives, and gopchang

On top of the deep red, rich-looking broth sit thick tofu, fresh chives, meat, and plump gopchang piled high — an insane visual! I carefully took the first spoonful of broth, and it's just the right amount of spicy and hot, with the distinct savory flavor of gopchang spreading through your mouth — pure art.

There's a helpful sign on one side of the table titled 'How to enjoy Horanggul's motsunabe (offal hot pot)', so you can just follow the eating order printed there. This yuzu soy sauce is the key point.

Japanese fresh udon noodles added into the gopchang broth

When should you add the fresh Japanese udon noodles?

The Japanese fresh udon noodles added to the beef gopchang hot pot at Horanggul Bangi Branch are best dropped in once you've eaten a good amount of the solid ingredients and the broth has reduced slightly. The plump udon noodles soak up the rich, deeply simmered gopchang broth so thoroughly that the noodles turn out genuinely chewy and delicious.

We kept saying to each other, what would we have done if we hadn't ordered this, haha. My companion and I scraped the pot clean until we could see the bottom. If you're looking for a gopchang hot pot restaurant with great atmosphere near Jamsil or Bangi stations, in the Bangi-dong restaurant alley, I strongly recommend 'Horanggul Bangi Branch'..!!!
