Gangnam café with crème brûlée flan and terrace: Upper and Under

In short

Upper and Under is a three-floor café between Gangnam and Sinnonhyeon stations in Gangnam, Seoul. I tried fig cake, crème brûlée flan, iced coffee, and Einspänner, then enjoyed the autumn terrace. Verdict: a lovely choice for dessert and conversation.

I had plans near Gangnam Station and thought, is there a café where we can relax? So I found this large Gangnam café with great vibes, delicious desserts, and nutty coffee!!!

Today I visited Upper and Under, a cozy retreat near Sinnonhyeon Station that also serves delicious desserts~ Being a Gangnam Station café, it was not the quiet, study-friendly kind of place, but rather a large café in Gangnam perfectly suited to meeting friends, dates, and gatherings. The varied desserts and delicious coffee made for such a happy date time~

With its stylish exterior that suited the vivid blue sky so well, Upper and Under is located midway between Gangnam Station and Sinnonhyeon Station.

Upper and Under is a large, three-floor café made up of a basement, first floor, and second floor.

There were plenty of cool seats in the basement too~

A sun-filled, lovely seating area opened up, along with tasty-looking desserts and an interior fragrant with coffee~

There is also a terrace upstairs, where I could enjoy autumn as the sky grew higher and the air became properly cool~

Coffee and freshly baked desserts

Along with coffee and non-coffee drinks, there was a wide selection of cream lattes too—they seem to know their way around them.

The rustic but delicious-looking desserts, baked and replenished right away, were such a sight to admire~

Besides baked treats, there were all sorts of cakes—and even a huge, thick Basque cheesecake. Everything looked seriously delicious~

What I ordered

  • Fig cake ₩8,500
  • Crème brûlée flan ₩6,900
  • Iced Americano ₩6,500
  • Iced Einspänner ₩8,000

I ordered cake and crème brûlée, plus an Einspänner—one of the signature drinks—and an iced Americano~

How were the fig cake and crème brûlée flan?

The Americano came in a pretty beaker-like glass, while the desserts looked wonderful on white plates. First, I moistened my throat with the iced Americano (??) before getting started. Its nutty, deep flavor was completely to my taste~

Now, onto the desserts~

Fig cake and crème brûlée flan

The fig cake was generously packed with figs. The rich, nutty cream, fig cream layered throughout, and fresh figs came together in a gentle sweetness that made it impossible to stop eating~

As for the crème brûlée... I wanted to film the top cracking crisply... but my clumsy hands... shattered it like the ceiling was collapsing... crash!!! Still, the bittersweet caramel layer and custard cream with the pie-like pastry were sweet and stress-meltingly good~

Einspänner with wonderfully thick cream

To finish, Einspänner cream can often be so light that it mixes in and melts away as you drink it. This one had an incredibly thick texture (?), and its rich flavor and chewy feel gave it even more depth.

When you take in the layered Einspänner in one sip, the nutty, thick cream layer and coffee beneath enter your mouth together, completing a wonderfully rich, nutty, sweet Einspänner~ Perhaps because the cream was so rich, even the last sip was delicious~

I enjoyed both the desserts and coffee so much~!

With its spacious setting, warm sunlight, and happy atmosphere, this was a large Gangnam Station café that is great for talking with friends, family, or colleagues. The desserts and coffee were high quality too, so I think it would be a delightful Gangnam café experience even if you came specifically for the desserts rather than for conversation.
