Fruit sando-style dessert, four flavors in Gyeongju: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a dessert café on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju that sells fruit mochi and tarts. The writer ordered four flavors — fresh chocolate, fig, pineapple, and gold kiwi — but one was mistakenly packed as mango instead, and tasting it revealed something closer to a fruit sando (thin castella-coated bread) than chewy mochi. The unsweetened vanilla bean cream paired with well-ripened fruit made it a good match for coffee.

Today I'm sharing Tareudang, a dessert café on Hwangnidan-gil that I stopped by while traveling around Gyeongju!

Visiting Tareudang café on Hwangnidan-gil

Hwangnidan-gil has so many pretty cafés and such a wide variety of desserts that browsing around makes you want to try one of everything, haha! This time I was craving something a bit different, so I visited Tareudang in Gyeongju!

What we ordered at Tareudang and the price

Tareudang sells fruit mochi, tarts, and more! Here's what we ordered that day —

  • ✔️ Fresh chocolate
  • ✔️ Fig
  • ✔️ Pineapple
  • ✔️ Gold kiwi

That's what we ordered. The glass display listed ₩22,500... but the total came to ₩24,500? At first I thought, "huh, that's a bit more than I expected," but it turned out the staff had accidentally packed one item as mango instead! 😂 Still, since we love fruit desserts, we just decided to try it too, haha.

They were busy dusting on castella powder in real time, haha. It didn't look like they had a red-bean-paste fruit mochi option.

You can pick your fruit

You can pick your own fruit

If you like fruit, it's nice that you can pick among fig, pineapple, and gold kiwi to suit your taste, haha. Personally I prefer desserts where you can still taste the fruit's freshness rather than ones that are just sweet. At Tareudang the cream isn't very sweet, so eating it with the fruit wasn't overwhelming at all — and the fruit was nicely ripened too.

That said, if you're expecting the usual chewy, stretchy glutinous-rice fruit mochi, it might feel a bit different! To me it honestly felt more like a fruit sando plus castella than fruit mochi!

I thought it was fruit mochi, but...

At first glance it looks like fruit mochi, but once I tried it, it felt closer to fruit wrapped in thin bread with castella than actual mochi! The texture in particular was much softer and fluffier than expected — definitely different from regular mochi!

If I had to compare it, I'd say it's basically a fruit sando with a different shape — that's probably the easiest way to describe it! Fruit sandwiched between bread with soft cream mixed in, so it'd go well with coffee too.

The cream was really soft

What personally impressed me was the cream! It wasn't very sweet — soft with a nutty flavor. It didn't cover up the fruit's own sweet, tangy taste, and I could even see the cream was packed full of vanilla bean specks!

Cutting the fig one in half revealed a pretty cross-section too — the visuals were quite nice overall! Perfect for photos to document the desserts you tried while exploring Hwangnidan-gil.

At Tareudang, a fruit mochi spot on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju, the fresh chocolate mochi comes dusted with cinnamon powder — worth knowing before you buy! The kiwi one also had that same cream, mochi skin, and castella powder combo.

This time there was a small mix-up where one item was packed as mango instead, but thanks to that we got to try an unplanned mango one too, haha 😂 Overall, Tareudang was a combo of not-too-sweet, soft vanilla bean cream, well-ripened fruit, and fluffy bread.
