Busan sashimi spot with half-and-half halibut mulhoe: Suseong Susan

In short

Suseong Susan is a sashimi and mulhoe (raw fish in cold broth) restaurant near the Sinho Industrial Complex in Sinho-dong, Gangseo, Busan. Mulhoe and sashimi bibimbap were ordered together at Suseong Susan, with halibut and flounder sashimi arriving half-and-half on its own plate to mix into the icy broth or the gochujang sauce, and abalone came with the free side dishes. Because the sashimi is served separately, its freshness is easy to judge, and the private parking lot out front makes Suseong Susan an easy family meal by car.

I've been craving mulhoe (raw fish cold soup) lately, so I headed to Suseong Susan in Gangseo, Busan. The sashimi comes out on a separate plate, which made it feel fresher and more special. Here's my review of the mouth-watering halibut and flounder combo — let's get into it!

Where is Suseong Susan in Sinho-dong, and is there parking?

Suseong Susan is located at 321-1 Sinho-dong, Gangseo-gu, Busan (27 Sinhosandan1-ro 18beon-gil), with a private parking lot right in front. Hours are 11:00–20:00, and 11:00–15:00 on Wednesdays.

The restaurant was bigger than I expected, with plenty of tables. The spacing between tables felt generous too, making it a good spot for a family meal or a stop on a drive. And since there's dedicated parking, it's also a convenient place to visit by car.

Ordering both mulhoe and sashimi bibimbap at Suseong Susan, with abalone in the side dishes

At Suseong Susan I ordered mulhoe and sashimi bibimbap together. I'd actually already decided on a menu before I went! But once I got there, the sashimi bibimbap looked so good that I boldly ordered both.

After ordering, the side dishes came out — and abalone was included, no less!

Suseong Susan's icy-broth mulhoe with half-and-half halibut and flounder sashimi

Suseong Susan's mulhoe comes with a spicy-tangy special broth piled high with slushy ice, and the sashimi — halibut and flounder, half-and-half — is served on a separate plate. A moment later, the mulhoe arrived, its spicy-tangy broth topped with cool, slushy ice.

And on a separate plate, the sashimi came neatly sliced and arranged half-and-half. Glossy halibut and boneless flounder filled the plate generously — I wanted to dig in right away, but held back.

Because it would taste even better dropped into the cool, spicy slushy broth and scooped up with plenty of vegetables! I first tried it with just the sashimi, mixed in lightly. The halibut and flounder had a sweet umami that built with every chew, and it paired really well with the broth.

Adding a bowl of rice and mixing it all together brought in even more tangy-sweet-spicy flavor, so there wasn't a boring bite the whole time. My spoon just wouldn't stop — it had that kind of addictive taste.

Suseong Susan's sashimi bibimbap also has the sashimi served separately — you place it on top of the vegetables, then drizzle on a spicy-sweet special gochujang (red chili paste) sauce. The sashimi bibimbap, with its own charm distinct from the mulhoe, arrived with the aroma of garlic and sesame oil wafting up.

The sashimi bibimbap had the sashimi served separately too! Seeing the sashimi laid out separately like this made it feel more trustworthy, since the freshness was right there to see. Is it just me? haha

Once again, they piled on the pale, translucent halibut and flounder sashimi generously over the vegetables!

And then drizzling on that spicy-sweet special gochujang sauce completed a mouth-watering-looking dish.

Mixing the sashimi and vegetables evenly with the sauce and taking a big bite, the crunch of the vegetables and the chewiness of the sashimi made it disappear before I knew it. It delivered a hearty meal with a charm all its own, different from the mulhoe!

Final verdict: who will enjoy Suseong Susan?

Located near Myeongji Sinho Industrial Complex in Gangseo, Busan, Suseong Susan is a local favorite built on a strong reputation for fresh sashimi.
