Sushi set meal with braised eel at Min Cook Dasima, Goyang

In short

Min Cook Dasima is a Hundred-Year Store sushi restaurant in Goyang, Gyeonggi, a 3-minute walk from Exit 1 of Hwajeong Station on the 2nd floor of Jinsol Plaza. On a weekend evening the writer ordered the sushi set meal, the sake-don (salmon rice bowl) set, and tuna sushi, tasting everything from braised eel and chawanmushi to tempura, with the chewy flounder sushi and silky raw salmon standing out most. With its neat presentation and fresh ingredients, it's a sushi restaurant worth revisiting and good for treating someone special.

Min Cook Dasima, a Hundred-Year Store Japanese restaurant near Hwajeong Station

I went to Min Cook Dasima, a place selected as a Hundred-Year Store. It's been loved consistently for a long time, serving food from a Japanese-cuisine master, and it's the oldest Japanese home-style and sushi restaurant in Goyang.

This place uses good ingredients so you can really feel the freshness in the food. This time I tried the sushi set meal and the sake-don (salmon rice bowl) set meal.

Interior atmosphere and seating

I was surprised at how spacious it was as soon as I opened the door. The tables are spaced comfortably apart, with seating ranging from two-tops to large group tables. The atmosphere is clean yet cozy, making it a great spot for family meals, gatherings, or dates. The vibe is nice, but the food comes out neatly plated too, so it's a good restaurant for eating with someone special or for treating someone.

One side is a floor-to-ceiling window, and the decor by the window really gives off that Japanese restaurant feel.

Menu board listing sushi set meals and rice bowls

There's a really wide range of menu items, from sushi set meals to rice bowls, grilled fish sets, various sashimi rice bowls, and sashimi.

There's also a takeout-only lunchbox menu! We visited on a weekend evening so everything was sold out, but on weekdays from 11am to 2:30pm they also serve a weekday lunch special. The lunch menu is especially affordable, so I really envy anyone who can visit on a weekday!

The set meal spread

Porridge came out first. The warm egg porridge was seasoned just right, a nice way to whet the appetite before the main meal.

The food came out fast too. Both dishes had generous portions for the price, so I was satisfied even before taking a bite.

Melt-in-your-mouth raw salmon: the sake-don set meal

My husband's pick! The sake-don (salmon rice bowl) set meal. The set meal is only ₩3,000 more than the basic version, but you get salad, side dishes, soup, and crispy tempura. Since the price difference is small, I'd recommend getting the set meal!

Full spread of the sake-don set meal
Thickly sliced raw salmon sake-don

Being raw salmon, the sheen alone was different. How does it come out so neatly plated! Each slice was cut nice and thick too, making it look even more delicious.

There was a special soy sauce mixed in, so I mixed it into the rice and topped it with a piece of salmon — wow, it really does melt in your mouth! The salmon was soft and moist, and the sauce added a savory depth that really brought out the flavor. This is definitely a Hwajeong Station restaurant worth knowing, I thought.

I worried my husband might feel like the salmon bowl alone wasn't enough, so we also ordered the tuna sushi — it was really soft and cut thick, filling my mouth even with just one piece. Clean-tasting but with a nice nuttiness, it was delicious.

The neatly plated, generously portioned sushi set meal

The sushi set meal comes with 9 pieces of assorted sushi, chawanmushi, salad, tempura, and miso soup, along with a braised or grilled fish dish — the day I visited it was braised eel. The set is neatly presented and generously portioned, making for a filling meal.

Sushi set meal with chawanmushi and salad

I tried the salad first — the sauce base was tangy and I could taste the freshness, clean and delicious.

The chawanmushi was really soft! It seemed to melt as soon as it hit my mouth.

The braised eel and radish had a salty-sweet seasoning with real depth of flavor. This place is good at braised dishes too!

The miso soup was a bit on the saltier side, but savory and clean, and the hot broth was comforting on the stomach.

The 9-piece assorted sushi — the flounder sushi surprised me

With the assorted sushi, I couldn't decide what to eat first. Every single piece felt precious..

The sushi that surprised me most was the flounder sushi. I used to think flounder was just an unremarkable sushi choice, but Min Cook Dasima's flounder had a chewy texture with a subtle sweetness that felt on a completely different level from any flounder I'd had before.

Plate of 9-piece assorted sushi

Each piece of sushi had its own true flavor, and I liked that. It was soft and moist with just the right amount of rice, so the overall balance was great.

Mackerel sushi and soy-marinated shrimp sushi
Thickly piled egg sushi

The mackerel sushi was clean-tasting and nutty with absolutely no fishy taste. The soy-marinated shrimp sushi was salty, soft, and had a lovely rich texture.

The egg sushi, which is my favorite kind, was piled up thick and filled my mouth — I was happy the moment I took a bite :)

Three pieces of thinly fried tempura

The thinly fried tempura comes in three pieces: fried shrimp, fried pepper, and fried sweet pumpkin!

Overall the tempura was crispy outside and moist inside — the shrimp was the softest and most moist. The fried pepper was also crispy and a nice surprise treat!

The pumpkin was thick, fluffy, and sweet, a nice way to finish off the meal.

When I paid, I mentioned that I'd parked, and got the 1 hour free parking. There's also a Min Cook regulars' discount chat room! They apparently run free or discount events every week, so if you live or work near Hwajeong Station, it might be worth checking out these perks too.
