Ikseon-dong same-day bakery: coffee bread and garlic baguette, Munhwa
In short
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery in Ikseon-dong, Jongno, Seoul, a few minutes on foot from Jongno 3-ga Station. Munhwa Bakery bakes everything the same day and gives away whatever is left to people in need, and because the shop is small only 2 groups go in at a time. There was a wait even on a weekday afternoon and one tray of garlic bread sold out, but the coffee bread and garlic baguette are what a first-timer should take home.

Where is Munhwa Bakery and how do you get there from Jongno 3-ga Station?
Munhwa Bakery is a takeout-only bakery at 65 Donhwamun-ro, 1F, Jongno-gu, Seoul, in Ikseon-dong. It's within walking distance of Jongno 3-ga Station, and since there's no dedicated parking, I'd recommend walking over from the station! As a self-proclaimed bread lover, I finally visited Munhwa Bakery, which is rumored to be one of Seoul's top three bakeries 🤎

Since it's a takeout-focused spot, the interior is pretty cozy and not very spacious, so for a comfortable experience they only let two groups in at a time.

Baked the same day, leftovers given away
One thing that impressed me even more about Munhwa Bakery was that they operate on a same-day baking principle. 😊 To serve fresh bread every day, they bake only what's needed that day, and any leftover stock gets donated to people in need. It's not just about selling delicious bread — they're sharing what's left in a meaningful way too. The taste was great, but this warm-hearted way of running the business left just as strong an impression at this Seoul top-three bakery 🤎
The store was really clean and every loaf came individually wrapped, which felt hygienic and reassuring. The overall tidy atmosphere made choosing easy, and the packaging was neat and satisfying. Since it's optimized for takeout rather than lingering, it was quick and convenient to use!

How long is the wait at Munhwa Bakery on a weekday afternoon?
The moment I stepped in, the store was full of that nutty, delicious bread smell! 🥖🤎 As a bread lover, I felt my mood lift the second I walked in, haha. That distinct aroma of freshly baked bread got me even more excited. 😊 I visited on a relatively quiet weekday afternoon, but there was still quite a wait. True to its fame, plenty of people show up even on weekdays. 😊

What are Munhwa Bakery's signature breads?
Munhwa Bakery's signature items include garlic bread, chestnut rice bread, and onion bagels, and among these, coffee bread and garlic bread are said to be the most popular with visitors. Every kind of bread looked so good that I spent ages deciding. 😆 Being such a famous bakery, each loaf on display looked so tempting it was hard to just walk past, haha. If you're visiting for the first time like me, I'd recommend starting with the signature coffee bread and garlic bread!

The squid ink condensed milk bread and milk cream bread caught my eye too, but today's just for the signature menu...

The onion bagel was packed with cream cheese inside too!

The coffee bread I'd been curious about even before coming!

Garlic bread sold out by the tray: waiting for the fresh batch
The garlic bread, a popular item, had already sold out one tray, so I waited a bit and got a freshly baked batch! 🥖🧄 As expected for a hit item, it moves fast. Getting the warm, freshly baked garlic bread made the wait worth it, haha. Freshly baked is actually better!

What impressed me especially was how neatly they sliced the bread into ready-to-eat pieces before packing. 😊 It felt like they'd put real thought and care into it, which made it even more satisfying. It was convenient to eat right when I got home, and it would also make a great gift, haha.

What Munhwa Bakery's coffee bread tastes like with milk
I picked the garlic baguette and the coffee bread. I tried the coffee bread first, and the moment I opened the bag, a gentle coffee aroma rose up — really nice. It had that strong coffee-scent-forward feel, so coffee lovers would probably love just the smell alone. Taking a bite, the outside was mild while the inside was soft, and the more I chewed, the more that subtle coffee flavor came through. I was a little worried a coffee-flavored bread might be too bitter or intense, but it turned out not overwhelming at all — just the right amount of sweetness and nuttiness. ☕️🤎 I had it with milk and it was really delicious.

Personally, I think it'd be great as a simple breakfast or as an afternoon snack with a cup of coffee.
Garlic baguette, the kind that calls for an iced americano
The item I was most looking forward to at Munhwa Bakery was the garlic bread. It's a signature item and a favorite among visitors, so I really wanted to try it. I brought home a freshly baked garlic bread, and the moment I opened the bag, a nutty garlic scent mixed with sweetness wafted up — so tempting. 🥖🧄 The sweet-and-salty flavor of the garlic bread practically called for an iced americano, so I had them together!! I'd really recommend picking up the garlic bread at Munhwa Bakery.

Given its location in Ikseon-dong, it's clearly a popular spot for foreign visitors too — loved by both locals and tourists. Between the taste and the way it's run, it was a memorable visit all around. If you're looking for a great bakery in Ikseon-dong, be sure to try the garlic bread and coffee bread at Munhwa Bakery 🥖
