Gongdeok duck BBQ half-and-half set for two in Seoul: Gongjung Dodeok
In short
Gongjung Dodeok is a duck barbecue restaurant on Baekbeom-ro 20-gil in Mapo, Seoul, between Gyeongui Line Forest Park and Daeheung Station. During an evening out in Gongdeok, the writer ordered the Gongjung half-and-half set for two — half seasoned duck jumulleok and half plain roasted duck, with minari (water dropwort) and duck potato stew — and added a barley shrimp minari pancake. Alternating between the boldly seasoned jumulleok and the clean roasted duck kept the meal interesting, and the cool evening on the outdoor patio made Gongjung Dodeok worth the trip.

Now that the weather's getting cooler, I keep gravitating toward places with outdoor seating. Eating quietly indoors is nice too, but there's something about grilling meat outside with an evening breeze that hits different.
I had an evening plan around Gongdeok this time, and while looking for somewhere to go, I came across Gongjung Dodeok (공중도덕). Searching for a Gongdeok bbq restaurant, I noticed it centers on duck, which felt a bit unusual, and since it's near Gyeongui Line Forest Park it seemed convenient to combine with a walk before or after the meal, so I decided to visit.
I'd also heard the outdoor patio atmosphere was good, so I was expecting it to feel especially nice on a pleasant evening.

Looking for duck barbecue in Gongdeok: finding Gongjung Dodeok
Gongjung Dodeok is a duck bbq restaurant at 28 Baekbeom-ro 20-gil, 1F, Mapo-gu, Seoul, between Daeheung Station and Gyeongui Line Forest Park. Even before stepping inside, the area felt lively. Gongdeok clearly fills up with office workers once quitting time hits, and the evening mood was different because of it.
Once inside, it wasn't a spotless, quiet bbq place — more the kind of spot where you'd casually have a drink with your meal. If you like that outdoor-patio kind of vibe, I think you'd enjoy this place.
It felt like a low-pressure spot to sit with a friend, eat meat, and chat, and looking around, some tables were there for a meal while quite a few others were pairing food with drinks.
So I'd say it works well whether you're looking for a Daeheung Station restaurant or setting up an evening plan around Gongdeok.

What comes with the Gongjung half-and-half set for two?
After a long think over the menu, I went with the Gongjung half-and-half set for two. It comes with jumulleok (seasoned grilled meat) deeply marinated on one side, plain roasted duck on the other, plus minari (water dropwort) and duck potato stew — a nice way to enjoy several flavors at once.
We came to eat duck, so sticking to just one style of it would've felt like a shame. I liked being able to have both jumulleok and roasted duck together.
We also added a side of barley shrimp minari pancake.
Once it was all ordered, the table filled up fast. At first I thought it might be too much for two, but once we started eating, our chopsticks kept going back for more.
Tasting the seasoned duck jumulleok first
We grilled the jumulleok first.
As the meat hit the grill, the smell of the seasoning rose up right away, and it was surprisingly appetite-stirring. The seasoning had soaked in deep, not just coating the surface.
Tasting it, the salty-sweet sauce came through first, followed by duck's distinctive savory flavor. It wasn't overcooked into mushiness either — the texture stayed pleasantly chewy.
The bits that got slightly charred on the grill had even more concentrated umami from the seasoning. Those were my favorite part.
The seasoning is strong enough that it might get a bit much if you kept eating just that, but paired with minari, its fragrance cut through and I kept reaching for more than expected.

The plain roasted duck at Gongjung Dodeok
Moving from the jumulleok to the roasted duck completely changed the mood.
With no seasoning, I thought it might taste a bit plain at first, but instead the duck's own savory flavor came through clearly.
The outside grilled to a nice golden brown while the inside stayed moist, and the texture was good too. Alternating with the strongly seasoned jumulleok made the strengths of each really stand out.
Personally, the jumulleok felt more like a drinking snack, while the roasted duck seemed like it'd pair well with rice too.
Being able to eat both instead of just one flavor of duck seemed like the biggest strength of the half-and-half set for two.

Eating the duck with minari (water dropwort)
Grilling minari alongside the meat changed the flavor again.
Duck can be a bit fatty, but minari's fragrant, slightly peppery aroma cut through the richness, so it felt less greasy. Laying slightly wilted minari on top of the meat added an interesting texture and brought the aroma right to the front.
If you're looking for a Gyeongui Line Forest Park restaurant and also want to enjoy the outdoor patio atmosphere, this combo would be a good fit. Eating minari between bites of meat instead of just meat nonstop kept things from feeling heavy till the end.

The duck potato stew that follows the grill
One dish that was a pleasant surprise was the duck potato stew.
We'd already eaten quite a bit of meat, so I wasn't sure we'd have room for stew too. But after one spoonful of the broth, I kept coming back for more than I expected.
The savory flavor from the duck mixed with the stew's rich broth for a spicy yet deep taste. Bite of meat, spoonful of broth, back to the meat — before I knew it, the broth level had dropped quite a bit.
It seemed like it would go especially well if you're having drinks — a warm broth breaking up all that meat changes the rhythm of the meal naturally.

Why the barley shrimp minari pancake is worth adding
The barley shrimp minari pancake we ordered as a side exceeded expectations too.
The edges were crisped up nicely while the center stayed moist and fragrant thanks to the minari. The barley shrimp added a subtle savory depth with every bite.
Picking off a piece of pancake between bites of meat worked really well. The minari flavor wasn't overpowering, and it came through together with the savory shrimp, so it never felt like too much.
Between the two of us, we ended up quite full after the half-and-half set for two plus the shrimp minari pancake.

Evening on the outdoor patio in Gongdeok
At Gongjung Dodeok, the food was great, but the atmosphere is what stuck with me.
Sitting on the patio on a nice evening with duck and a drink felt like it could melt away a day's stress. It's a good spot for a casual dinner with friends, and equally fitting for office workers grabbing drinks after work.
When you look for a Gongdeok restaurant, there are plenty of bbq spots, but ones centered on duck are relatively rare. So for duck lovers, I think this is worth a visit at least once.
If you're already looking for somewhere to eat near Gyeongui Line Forest Park, it's easy to pair a visit here with a walk.
A few drawbacks at Gongjung Dodeok
If I had to point out a downside, enjoying the outdoor patio properly at Gongjung Dodeok depends a lot on the weather. On very hot days or rainy days, it'd probably be hard to get the same atmosphere I experienced.
Also, eating the richly seasoned jumulleok alongside the roasted duck, some people might find the jumulleok's flavor a bit strong depending on preference. It worked for me paired with minari, but if you prefer cleaner flavors, the roasted duck side might suit you better.
Still, this is easily adjusted just by mixing up how you order.

What to order on a return visit
This time I tried a bunch of dishes at once, but next time I'd love to just sit on the outdoor patio on a nice evening with duck and a drink.
The jumulleok stuck with me for how deeply the seasoning soaked in, and the roasted duck was clean and savory — switching between the two was genuinely fun. The duck potato stew was great to finish with as a broth, and the barley shrimp minari pancake was a satisfying side too.
If you're looking for a Gongdeok bbq restaurant or want a slightly different kind of duck place among Gyeongui Line Forest Park restaurants, Gongjung Dodeok is worth remembering. Personally, I'd love to go back on a nice evening just for the outdoor patio mood.
On a day when I wanted to properly enjoy duck bbq and the outdoor evening atmosphere in Gongdeok, Gongjung Dodeok turned out to be a better choice than expected. Which would you be more drawn to — the jumulleok or the roasted duck?
