Hyehwa lunch with tag-and-order and a self-service bar: Omil

In short

Omil Hyehwa Daehangno is a Western-style restaurant in Jongno, Seoul, about a 5-minute walk from Exit 4 of Hyehwa Station. At lunch, the writer used the tableside tag-to-order system to try rubber-duck omurice, gochujang butter pasta and buckwheat soba maki, plus a self-service bar with a charger and water station. The gochujang butter pasta was spicy and rich in a way that suited Korean tastes, and the baby chair made it a good pick for a family meal.

The cute dishes and utensils, tissues and wet wipes are brought to you once you're seated! Let's try a cool, refreshing sip of the Coke we ordered first..

Rubber-duck omurice topped with soft egg
Rubber-duck omurice

The rubber-duck omurice was so cute just from the look of it 💛 With soft egg on top, it looked delicious just to see! The sauce wasn't too strong, which let the soft flavor of the egg shine through.

What surprised me most was that it came with an adorable rubber duck plush! It's the kind of thing kids would love, so I thought it'd also be a good pick for a family meal out 🐥

How was the gochujang butter pasta

Gochujang butter pasta topped with meat
Gochujang butter pasta

The gochujang butter pasta had the spiciness of gochujang (Korean chili paste) blended well with the nutty, smooth flavor of butter! It had just the right amount of heat, so it wasn't greasy, but it also wasn't too spicy or overpowering, so I kept eating.

Being gochujang-based, this pasta really hit the spot for Korean taste buds, it was so good haha. The thick, rich sauce coated the noodles well, and eating it with the meat on top made it filling too 🤍

Buckwheat soba maki (buckwheat gimbap) with wasabi

The buckwheat gimbap (seaweed rice roll) was a combination that worked better than I expected. Inside were egg, cucumber, fried tofu and other ingredients, so each bite had a different texture!

And the wasabi served alongside was totally the kicker..🌿 The light flavor of the buckwheat gimbap combined with the sharp kick of the wasabi made it so much cleaner and more delicious! It felt like it brought out the natural flavor of the ingredients, and eating a healthy meal put me in a good mood too haha

Final verdict

This Hyehwa pasta spot, Omil Hyehwa Daehangno, has a warm atmosphere that's good for a date with a partner or a meal with family. The gochujang butter pasta is genuinely delicious!
