I got sashimi to go from Gaklak Market! I've passed by Gaklak Market plenty of times, but this was actually my first time visiting in person. I missed out on croaker sashimi when I went to Noryangjin Fisheries Market last time, so I was dying of curiosity about it. Croaker is more in season in summer, but I heard it's still delicious, so I trekked all the way to Gaklak Market before it's too late haha.

This was my first time actually coming to Gaklak Market and it felt kind of surreal haha. I'd heard from friends that they went and had sashimi or king crab, but I never thought I'd end up here myself! I went alone this time, but I'm thinking I should bring my boyfriend next time haha.

How to find Yeongjae Susan at Garak Market

I took the subway to Gaklak Market — walk out Exit 2 of Gaklak Market Station and Gaklak Market appears just ahead! From there, go straight for about 1–2 minutes and you'll reach the seafood market building.

Once you see the seafood market building, go in through Gate 6 and turn left — that's supposedly where Yeongjae Susan is. I accidentally went in through the wrong gate at first and had to ask another shop owner for directions haha.

Yeongjae Susan is basically right there once you walk in through Gate 6, so it should be easy to find. If you're having trouble, the shop number is C-10, so keep that in mind!

Croaker and flounder packed in the combo you want

Yeongjae Susan sells sashimi platters in all kinds of combinations! They apparently won an Excellence Award in the sashimi category and an Excellence Award in the delivery food sashimi category at the 2026 Korea Consumer Industry Awards. Once I visited, I could kind of see why — the owner and staff were all so kind, and even though I'd gone in thinking I'd order croaker, I was hesitating over the combo and they kindly gave me recommendations!

I really wanted croaker, so while I was debating between menu items that included it, I asked if they could do a croaker + flounder combo that wasn't even on the menu, and they happily said yes — and even matched the budget I had in mind. I was so grateful for that.

Seasonal seafood and spotless tanks at Yeongjae Susan

Besides seasonal sashimi, Yeongjae Susan also sells a wide range of seafood like sea cucumber, octopus, blue crab, and live shrimp. I heard blue crab is in season right now, so I'm thinking I should come back and try that too haha. Besides seasonal sashimi, I also bought live shrimp and mantis shrimp — I actually wrote a separate post about that on my blog!

Since it's blue crab season and live shrimp season right now, it's worth a visit if you're after either one haha. The live shrimp price is even close to the lowest around, at ₩31,000 per kg!

Fall is coming so gizzard shad should be in season, but I'm not really a fan of the bone-in sekoshi style, so I skipped it this time. What really stood out to me at Yeongjae Susan was how clean the tanks — or should I say tubs — were, and the water was crystal clear too. I believe there's always a reason so many customers keep coming back, and you could really tell the place was well managed!

Ordering, reservations and delivery tips

Since I was heading home to eat that day, I got mine packed to go — I just suddenly craved sashimi after work, so I dropped by on the spot, but apparently if you make a reservation ahead of time, they'll have everything prepped and ready for you!

A few extra tips if you're buying sashimi from Yeongjae Susan: ordering through Naver gets you a 20% discount coupon, so it's a cheaper way to buy. And if visiting is hard, you can also get it delivered by quick courier!

  • They're on Coupang Eats, Baemin1, and Yogiyo, all with free delivery within 4km of Yeongjae Susan
  • Ttaenggyeoyo and Baemin store delivery offer free delivery within 7km, with extra fees possible depending on distance
  • Ordering through the Mermaid Pirates app allows delivery up to 100km, with extra fees possible depending on distance

Even when ordering through these apps, they say the quality, quantity, and price are all identical to buying in person, so there's no need to worry about ordering ahead. Wow, seriously.

Insulated packaging and fish stew fixings included

After buying seafood including sashimi, you can also head upstairs to the vinegar-sauce room and eat right there! Note that a table setting fee applies separately. But I packed mine to take home instead, and it was nothing like the old-school fish market packaging I remembered... the packaging was something else — they packed everything beautifully in a gorgeous, upscale insulated bag!

Some places charge extra for fish stew ingredients, but at Yeongjae Susan, since I bought sashimi, they just threw in the fish stew fixings for free. I thought they'd only give fish and seasoning, but there was plenty of radish and bean sprouts inside too. They gave generous amounts of vinegar-chili sauce and soy sauce, plus pickled radish, wasabi, and ginger — nothing was missing!

How the croaker and thick-cut flounder tasted at home

My first-ever croaker was so incredibly chewy and delicious! The flounder was also sliced thick and plump, giving it a really satisfying texture haha. And that was only ₩60,000 — the value for money is seriously top-tier!! After eating sashimi this fresh at this price, I don't think I can go back to eating at a regular sashimi restaurant anymore, lol.

Flounder and perilla leaf salad made from leftover sashimi

After stuffing myself with the generous croaker and live shrimp sashimi, I had a bit of flounder left over, so I made the currently trendy flounder-perilla leaf salad with it haha. I found the golden-ratio sauce recipe online, made some sashimi-restaurant-style aged kimchi too, and wrapped it all in roasted seaweed — absolute perfection. Eating fresh sashimi to my heart's content after a long while felt like it did wonders for my body!! If you're heading to Gaklak Market and feel overwhelmed by all the sashimi restaurants, or just don't like being approached by touts, I recommend Yeongjae Susan without hesitation!!!
