So many delicious new spots have been opening in Euljiro lately that I seem to head there not only to meet friends but for dates, too. With atmospheric cafés and great restaurants tucked between old buildings and alleyways, it is a neighborhood that is fun to explore just by walking around. This time, I wanted to spend some unhurried time over a delicious Western-style meal somewhere with a nice atmosphere, so off to Euljiro I went. After looking into several places, I chose Hey Jinny (을지로 헤이지니)! I have always been a fan of Western dishes like pasta and risotto, so I arrived with high expectations—and once I got there, I loved not just the food but the feel of the space as well. For a date, flavor matters, of course, but the overall mood—things like table spacing, lighting, and music—matters more quietly than you might think. I could enjoy all of that comfortably here, and I was very glad I had picked it for our date that day.

An atmospheric spot in an Euljiro alley

As I arrived in Euljiro and walked through its alleys, I could immediately feel that unmistakable Euljiro atmosphere. It has a charm quite different from a busy commercial district full of tall buildings, which makes the walk itself enjoyable. There are lots of old buildings in Euljiro, with stylish little spaces nestled between them, and I think many people now come specifically for that mood. Hey Jinny also felt like a place that suited Euljiro’s character perfectly. I was curious about what it would be like before I even stepped inside, and once I entered, it felt both relaxed and tastefully put together. It was not overly decorated, which actually made it easier to settle in over a meal and conversation. Restaurants can sometimes be too loud or hectic for a date, making it hard to talk, but we were able to enjoy our meal at a relatively leisurely pace that day. I think it would suit anyone looking for an Euljiro date restaurant where the atmosphere matters just as much as the food.

A stylish atmosphere for a date

For me, atmosphere is one of the most important parts of a good date restaurant. No matter how delicious the food is, it can feel a little hard to stay for long if the restaurant is too chaotic. On the other hand, if it is overly formal, it can be difficult to talk comfortably. Hey Jinny felt nicely balanced in that respect. It was comfortable enough for an easy meal, yet had an atmosphere that made me want to take photos, so it was a great place for a date. Western dishes such as pasta and risotto are often beautifully plated anyway, and eating them in a lovely setting somehow makes the date feel even more special. As dishes began arriving at the table one by one, we naturally started taking pictures, and chatting about which dish looked like it would be best was a small pleasure in itself. These days, I consider the atmosphere of a space as well as the taste when choosing a restaurant, and in that sense, Hey Jinny was very satisfying.

Once our order began arriving, the meal really got underway. Western dishes are often beautifully plated, so it is only natural to take pictures when they come out. That day, too, the moment everything was set on the table, it all looked so appetizing.

The pasta in particular looked especially tempting, with the noodles and sauce coming together so nicely, and the dishes alongside it were all worth capturing in photos too. If you blog or use social media, food photos are probably important to you, and I liked that Hey Jinny had an atmosphere that worked beautifully for photos beyond the food itself. A wider shot of several dishes spread across the table looked lovely, while close-ups of each menu item came out appetizing too. If you want to make pretty memories in photos while enjoying delicious food on a date, a space like this is wonderful.

Now for the most important part: the taste! Food that looks good is great, but flavor is what matters most in the end. After taking a bite, I felt that the ingredients and sauces came together well throughout the meal. With Western food, the sauce can often determine the whole dish, and I liked that these had plenty of flavor without being overly intense. The pasta especially became more delicious the more I ate, with the noodles and sauce working so well together, and it did not feel heavy to enjoy a whole plate slowly. Sometimes at Western restaurants, a dish tastes great at first but becomes too rich to finish; that was not the case here. As we talked and ate at an easy pace, we enjoyed the food right to the end. On a date, sharing a meal slowly while talking is much nicer than rushing through it and leaving, isn’t it? Both the food and atmosphere made the day satisfying.

You can experience a wider range of flavors without ordering more than you can handle, which should make for an even more satisfying meal.

Hey Jinny would be nice for a casual meal, but its pleasant atmosphere also made me think it would be a good choice for a special day or date. An anniversary does not always have to mean going to an expensive restaurant, after all. Sometimes the time spent eating delicious food in a comfortable space and having lots of conversation with each other is what stays with you most. If you are meeting for the first time or are still a slightly awkward new couple, a Western-style restaurant with this kind of atmosphere might feel more comfortable than somewhere too formal. You can talk while waiting for the food, take photos of each other once it arrives, and let the time pass naturally while sharing delicious dishes. That is why I think it would work well for a blind date, an anniversary, or a date with a partner you have not seen in a while.
